Anyone wanna do a Ruan Jia master study thread? I'm going to try this one
what is this, a picture for ants?
>>3058132
Can anyone explain the technique he uses to create that sort of texture?
>>3058169
It's not soft brush
I bet full size image looks like this
>>3058174
Are you blind? And no the OP is clearly a quickie
How do I render like Ruan Jia?
>>3058157
that's the biggest resolution that exists of that particular piece (the original, not the ones enlarged by other people with lower quality). I've searched everywhere, even in chinese webs.
>>3058376
Edges and lighting mastery. that's 95% of what makes up his skill.
>>3058174
he does use soft brushes before adding details and texture though
>>3058132
BITCH PLEASE
He uses all kinds of brushes.
>>3058860
kek!
>>3058539
Aw, I liked the first version with the licking more.
>>3058860
did you do this?
>>3059935
nope, chink
this shit is better than the original
>>3059948
I hope you're kidding. They turned it into generic photoshop art with no character.
>>3059948
please tell me you're trolling
>>3059948
The nose and lips look fucking retarded
>>3059948
she looks hella autistic in this one
about 40 minutes in
working on bigger shapes and getting colors right.
>>3060124
great, can't wait to see when it's finished. that mouth is out of proportion though, it needs to be higher and more to her left
>>3058531
Wow, Ruan Jia legit has never uploaded a higher resolution of that drawing. It's weird because his ArtStation profile pic is of it. I wonder if all his file got corrupted and all he had left was a screenshot from 30% view or something.
>>3060128
Thanks. yeah i noticed. I'm working on that right now!
>>3060134
there's also this one, which is also very low quality. I don't know why he did this if it was on purpose, but it's my favorite piece from him, and fuck i'd love to see it at least a bit bigger
>>3058923
10 brushes maximum
>>3060166
Craig Mullins is like that too
>>3060124
Update. Adding more detail/searching for proportional mistakes.
>Will take a break until tomorrow because my hand is cramping and i have a fever so i shouldn't be in front of my laptop anyway, lol.
Keep the thread alive, anons.
>>3060183
bridge angle and tip of your nose is off, its like pointed twords us. chin is like that to i think. you are gettin there though. keep it up.
>>3060183
actually the cheek on our right is wide that is part of what messing up the chin.
>>3059948
ngmi
>>3060183
Good work so far!
For some reason I thought RJ was more the type to splash shit on the page and refine from there, because of his constant value shifting and texture. But man, if this >>3058539 is his process, my respect has doubled.
Gonna try to finish this tomorrow. My values are too extreme on the bright spots.
>>3062025
>>3060366
Oh, I'm pretty dumb then.
I think I'm reaching my limits of how much I'm learning because this is too high level. Bumping though, because this is the only study thread.
>>3058860
that face looks doofy as shit. good effort though
>>3062889
you need to blend better, anon. and why don't use use a soft brush? again, Ruan Jia is master of edges. Look at how the nose is sharp and crisp at the bridge, while the the light on her cheek is soft and blended. You need that variation. You can't do that if you're only using hard brushes.
I prefer to just extrapolate a lot from his work into my own. The bits I care about, at least, rather than doing a 1:1 study. Copying feels like such a waste of time, and I can never bring myself to do it.
I feel like I learn better when I apply it to something new, rather than copying shapes and aiming for accuracy over essence.
>>3064764
my god dude i love your strokes.
>>3064764
that's referencing. studying and then applying what you learned from memory into your work is the whole point of studies and how it sticks. otherwise you'll keep depending on references.

>>3065799
it's pronounced Ron Ja?
very inspiring though, Ruan Jia says he's always improved very slowly.. hm. well easy to say when you're been in the industry since you were 17 and are now like, what 32?
>>3064764
bbblog?
>>3065807
depends on accent i've heard him also say "wen jee-uh" before also
language is tonic not phonic
>>3065799
>don't work too hard
>I paint every day 11 or 10 hours, never more than that
dang, does he think working hard means drawing like 16 hours a day or something
>>3065817
I expected him to say something like 17 hours, so yeah 11 or 10 is surprisingly low for someone like him. It's also much more do-able, so that's exciting.
I think he started when he was 17 and is like 32 now? but he was already elite around 2007. So 10 hours a day for 6 years and you can be drawing like this
>>3065824
you're really fucking fucking stupid if you expected 17 hours. that leaves on average 7 hours for everything else, including sleeping, eating, not to mention chores and working a job to pay for life expenses (in his case, that would overlap with painting, not including meeting times and getting to and from work).
>>3058132
>>3064764
Hey dude can you please post your blog?
>>3065807
chinese here, its just ruan jia
>>3066694
I personally know an artist that did so, dimwit.
>not to mention chores and working a job to pay for life expenses
this wasn't applicable.
>>3068300
miss some points of saturation on the nose, and the face its not rotate enough
>>3068326
How did he do that? What about food, sleep and other human needs?
>>3058132
OP, I want to master study you instead
Your naked body that is
>>3068757
>asian
>human needs
lol
>>3068370
Thankyou for the feedback anon
>>3068757
4 hours of sleep, and food that requires no cooking or serving, like pre-packaged, instant microwave, or chips, fruit, etc. all eaten with disposable plastic utensils. and literally no "other human needs" besides brushing teeth. None. That includes seldom showering or changing clothes, and obviously no socializing. he lived with his parents who paid for their living.
sounds disgusting and unhealthy, but he didn't look dirty or smelled, and never got actually sick. aside from being generally weak and underweight.
>>3065817
>>3065824
fuck there's no way I can see myself drawing for 10 hours a day, at least not now, and I'm already old as fuck to not worry about anything else. I'm trying to 'study' for 8 hours a day but most of that time is spent watching videos and not actually drawing, I'm a lazy fuck and take a lot of brakes here and there, probably only end up drawing 2 actual hours.
>>3068852
>most of that time is spent watching videos and not actually drawing
you should listen to FZD's podcast on learning on your own. he says watching videos and reading books doesn't count whatsoever.
>>3068865
Actually it does if you apply whatever you learn from it.
>>3068865
Do you recall any episode he goes into that¡ I'd like to hear more. Well I'm watching Glenn Vilppu videos from New Masters Academy so it's pretty fundamental stuff, I gotta learn the theory first but I'm well aware I should be drawing way more than I'm. Figure drawing can be so damn boring when your anatomy turns out like shit and it's so tough.
>>3068914
this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3Al7QAS89s&t=2175s
>>3068821
That's just insane, how can someone survive on 4 hours of sleep
