Has anyone managed to find new friends in their mid to late 20s? Ever since my GF left me I've been completely arone. I didn't even really notice I was sharing my circle of friends with that girl until it was too late. I literally have no one to talk to or share my art with at the moment.

I tried life drawing but it was mostly older folk. They swarmed me because I was "so good"... uncomfortable. I'll try to look into some other course. Btw, I'm currently residing in Berlin/Germany.

Lots of artists have sameface issue, I have the opposite. Every time I try to draw a character it looks a little different (example: a page of skeches of the same character with different poses and expressions don't always look like the same character)
How can I avoid/fix this?
>>
How do I go about soft-shading things? I'm on nip studio and the brush tools are beyond my meagre intellect.

What are some appealing traits to have in an art style? for example, a tumblrina would like big noses, an anime fan would like big expressive eyes, what does /ic/ like?

Can anyone give me a way of composing a figure that guidelines somehow the width of the limbs? I'm fine drawing torsoes, then end up with twiggy arms or elephant legs.

>>
>>3056837
Do skull / musculature studies. Sketch a lot of faces, learn how they're put together and what anchors their features down to their face. Draw turnarounds of characters. Then draw them over and over until the same character looks the same from whatever angle you put them in.

It's a lot of work to fix but it's not impossible so good luck
>>
How do I maintain facial symmetry and keep the features aligned?
>>
>>3056877
Technically speaking, faces are asymmetrical. Either way, flipping the canvas frequently will help you notice errors in alignment. This is far easier on digital.

>>3057345
It's the way the hatching follows the curves of every muscle meticulously, combined with adding detail within the gaps between the hatching lines (dots, horizontal lines). It's just a lot of human figure studying, 3d awareness and hard work on details to get the hatching so precise
>>
>>3057355
Yeah it looks so precise that I assumed that there was some kind of trick to it.
But I guess in the end it comes down to hard work and patience, as expected from 16th century artists.

Question I think you d/ic/ks can probably bully me about.
I'm currently attending a community college for fine arts and I'm not entirely sure what the benefit is. Most of my art gains seem to be from personal study; however, if I were to quit school I'd lose my study time since I'd be forced to pick up another job to pay for the loans. A benefit of going to school is to "make connections" but I find it hard to relate to the 18 year old babbies that only want to draw anime and refuse to do anything that doesn't involve their "style". I've recently been presented the opportunity to start up the art club and I think that might pay off if I can use it as a leverage point to move me further, advance my skills, and bring the overall skill level of the members up as well. Staying in school is prolonging the inevitable wage slave no time zone. I prefer choosing the option that creates more options, which is why I'm currently staying but if you were in my situation what would you do?

How in the flying fuck do I get used to drawing digitally?

Right now I'm using a Surface Pro 4 for drawing, but I also have a wacom kicking around I used to use but even after months I still find that I hate drawing digitally. I can't shade right, my lines are all sketchy messes, I just don't like it compared to traditional medium. I'd much rather just grab a pencil and a piece of paper to draw, I feel much more in control.

Since I like drawing stylized stuff and want to get into commissions I feel like I'm definitely going to have to adjust but I really don't know how.

>>
>>3056841
That's all up to personal taste. A better question would be what do you like? Most people enjoy art styles that look unique, even if it doesn't fit their personal tastes, so going out and drawing art to fit your own unique sense of aesthetics is probably your best bet.

Why do you want to do it? Do you want to disassociate yourself from the subjects you were doing? Insecurity over the quality of older work? Looking to get work as a professional? Shitty fanbase?

I would generally say no you shouldn't because it's just annoying and if anyone cares they'll track you down and make the connection regardless, but if it's a professional work thing and you were drawing super kinky porn then that's a bit more understandable.
>>
>>3059833
It's because I don't like the alias I've been posting under and I've said some embarrassing things and posted some shitty work under that name.
>it's just annoying
I only have like 10 followers anyways, there's no one to annoy.
>>
>>3059799
Both are equally good options, it's a choice to make
I personally prefer going into color directly
>>
>>3059646
I wouldn't delete anything, just make a new alias and make sure there are no ties to the previous one.

they should last a lot longer than that. You might be pressing too hard and damaging the tip, or perhaps you purchased a pen that people had tested too much in the store... faber castell are usually packaged, though.

>>

Thanks ill try it
>>
>>3060347
The key to understanding that is knowing that your Humerus can rotate medially to up to about 90 degrees and that the Olecranon (elbow) is statically locked on the backside of the humerus.

Know too, that the upper arm (Humerus) and lower arm (Radius and Ulna) can rotate independent of each other

Once you understand that, start trying to locate the position of the olecranon (elbow) in your reference.

Then, locate the head of the head of the Ulna and Radius on their wrist. Remember that on your wrist region, Ulna is on the pinky side and Radius is on the thumb side. This region is locked with the rotation of your wrist and will move along with it.

Also remember that on your elbow region, Ulna is on the medial side and Radius is on the lateral side. This region is also statically locked with the position of the humerus and will move along as your Humerus rotates

With those clues accurately located simply trace them together to predict how the orientation of the humerus and ulna is inside.
>>
>>3060523
Also, to add, the olecranon is merely an extension of the ulna and serve as a clasp to the backside of the Humerus

How do you draw like this? I have practiced loomis and watched proko, both of which demonstrate how to draw facial features using *values*. Not using line work. Yet I see stuff like this on /ic/ constantly, it's very appealing visually and much less effort required to do a simple study. My question is how do you draw the features like this? In some programs like CSP, and paint tool sai you can draw with transparency; sort of like turning what brush you are using into an eraser.
My question is if there is a way to do this in photoshop CC, maybe a plug-in?

Transferring from intuos4 to cintiq13 I suddenly realised that I've used a lot of pressure on intuos. Like, really log, my lines was almost always of 100% thickness. Now with cintiq it seems that I use pen like a real graphite pencil and laying a very small amount of presure on it. That leads to great incosistency in line width.
Did anyone came across the same problem? What people do in this case usually? Getting a habit of laying more pressure to pen? Adjusting pen sencibility(can you do it anyway?) Or is is some other workflow, eg tuning brushes for a lessen reaction to pressure?

When I look at popular artists (or really any artist that gets a lot of attention) it seems they're always consistent with their style. I know consistency is important for people to recognize your work and that kind of thing, but is it really necessary to choose one style and stick with it? I personally like switching between (for example) cel-shading and soft-shading depending on what I feel like, but I'm not sure if this is detrimental to being consistent?

desu I'd just study something else. I hate to sound like some STEM asshole, but now that I'm in my late twenties, working and going to school full time, my perspective on the world is changing. I'm taking a community college art class over the summer right now, my first non-grade school art class ever, but I've been drawing casually for 20+ years and I'm easily above everyone's skill level, but what good is it? I met a guy that has a masters in visual arts and he's working at the same grocery store I am.

When I was a younger guy I thought the world was full of endless possibilities and potential. Now that I'm getting older I just see a lot of doors closing.

If you've got the drive, talent, and ability to network to go as far as this stuff can possibly take you, by all means, go for it. Aim for a career like nothing can possibly stop you. For me, art will always just be something I do in my off time. I hold no illusions about a career in this any longer.
>>
>>3059163

How do i get into the world of drawing landscapes and enviroments? I have been grinding only people, anatomy and all that stuff but today i wanted to try landscapes since i find them beautiful, i checked Loomis (Fun with a pencil) since it has perspective information in it but i feel kind of retarded since i dont seem to understand Loomis on this subject.

Pic related (not my work), i know it's not perfect, the author of this makes mistakes in a lot of his works but i still enjoy his works, i would like to do the same, i am not looking for perfection but i neither want it to look so retarded even a normie can tell it is retarded

How long would it take to attain Kyle's skill?
>>
>>3065433
Impossible to quantify. It's not a mathematical solution, like "Do this many hours, I will be at x level". Each person is different, and has different levels of innate talent, affinity towards art, intelligence, creative energy, and experience. Some people are slow learners, some pick things up right away.
Better to set Kyle as a goal, and work towards it - however long it takes, thats how long it takes.
Having said that, most master level artists take at least a decade to truly hone their talent and skills and mastery of a medium.

>>3057345
Years and years and years of practice. This is the work of a master engraver, at the height of his career, he was in his 40's when he did this piece. This kind of crosshatching was unique to engraving, so if you want to learn how, that's where to start. It's somewhat of a dead art, so you may have to a lot of research - most of which will be trial and error on your part.
>>
>>3059163
Stick with it. Community College will always be low energy and babbies, when you transfer to a 4 years school, you should then be among more dedicated students. An art club is a great idea, if you have time.
In all honesty, a degree period is better than no degree, job-wise. A BfA will open more doors, than none.

Lack of talent, passion, creativity, it can be any number of reasons. Talent is most likely the biggest issue.
Going through the illustration program in college, there were some students, who, having great technical skill, just had no talent or creativity, and we knew they'd never make it. It's sad, but, it is what it is. You can't fake it, and you can't force it. That's why there are 10 million gazillion guitar players in the world, and only one Eddie Van Halen. Most of them, given time, could learn to play Eruption, but they could never write it. That's the difference.

Start putting together simple compositions, working towards finished pieces. That's always the end goal. "Fundamentals" is breaking down the separate elements of a finish painting, and learning them apart from the whole. You learn each piece, and then start putting them together as a whole. This is when your goals become important, what kind of work do you want to do? Concept art? Illustration, like book covers, or kid's books? Decide that, and start trying to do complete pieces yourself - the process will show you the areas you still need work on.

Funny you should mention that, I went in for computer science when I started but found it soul sucking. I ended up teaching myself everything for the classes since my teachers were not involved at all. I figured if I can teach myself this then why am I at school for it?
You may say "Then why are you in art classes if you can just teach yourself that as well?"
The feedback loop for art is much more obfuscated in comparison to CS, having a trained and experienced eye is helping me to improve in areas I wouldn't have even noticed before.

Sadly, this is true. While it's not impossible for someone to walk into a college at 18 and suddenly show talent, it's rare - artists generally are born that way, and show signs early on. None of my other siblings have any talent in drawing or painting, but they've found their talents in other things.

Are there any examples of intelligent fictional characters that aren't bipedal/look like a human?
It seems like any fictional/alien species that has its own technology, architecture, science, culture are bipedal.
Starcraft's protoss, Halo's Covenant, Mass effect's aliens, Ridley Scott's Alien, Predator, Warhammer Fantasy/40k, Star Wars, Star Trek

The only thing I can think of having civilization and not bipedal are like centuars or mermaids.
I'm just designing a fictional world and it seems like a lot of the intelligent species are bipedal and resemble humans... Are there any examples of things totally out of the box but have their own intelligent society?

>>
>>3066364
I've had this question before and I came up with two reasons.

1: I forget where I read it but a lot of authors believe that if you have a character that looks less like a human, the majority of readers are less likely to sympathize with them. Its why in so many fantasy worlds the races are just funny looking people with lumpy ass heads, they're still similar to humans so people can easily empathize with them.

2: If you don't design bipedal races, you have to design how their world would work.
Think of a race without hands and how they'd get shit done. How would they shoot a gun? How would they fly a ship? How would they build their homes? How would they wear their clothes or put them on? How would they do fucking anything a civilized society would do?
The simple answer is you don't do it. You just make everyone bipedal and make different alien races be in different enviroments with different elements or resources that effect their looks, culture and tech.
>>
>>3066364
The ayylmaos from Arrival are extremely non-human, but not a lot of their actual civilization is really explored. Their language, cultural outlook, and different way of interaction with/mutual learning of humans are pretty fucking cool and developed, though. They're also very sympathetic, too.
>>
>>3066468
I always imagined an alien that advanced would more than likely not have a biological form. Or any type of form at all.

This always confused me. The singularity is a widely known concept and yet every scifi completely ignores it. It's inevitable.

There won't be things like laser guns or StarTrek or whatever the fuck. No faster than light travel. That kind of technology will come from something greater than man. By the time man reaches something like Mass Effect we will be literal Gods, able to shape time and space itself to whatever we want.

The only reason there might even be people left is if our divine forms get bored and want to play human.

My issue with faces is that they lack any depth kind of, very flat. If I try to make it detailed like a real face they all look like weird baboon monstrosities. I'll check on that book right now though, thanks.

Also I had another question. They say not to draw anime, because it's hars to draw real life after. Does this mean specifically anime, or all animated non realistic things? >>3066899
There is no difference whatsoever between your pic and anime. But no one's saying you're not allowed to draw unrealistic at all. Just make sure your main focus is on studying, anatomy, color theory, perspective etc., and you can create some stylized work on the side. Just make sure to apply what you've learned in them. I'd probably wait at least a little before starting to stylize until you've got the very basics down, so like after half a year to a year of practicing, or else it won't be very valuable tie spent. That's just my opinion though.
>>
>>3067274
The issue is I don't know what any of those things you listed are! Every time I try to draw I just wanna draw and all these things get thrown around and all sorts of differing opinions, and it get a solidly confusing.
>>
>>3067290
Well you fag that's why the sticky exists, go read it. Read the books in it. Watch some fucking proko videos or whatever. We're not here to hold your hand.

>>
>>3067301
I mean yes I pay attention to the sticky and I'm reading it slow, but the books turn me off a bit. You don't think it's a little silly, to draw using s viewfinder and some plastic?
>>
>>3067304
The real reason why you get odd and conflicting information is because everyone learns in a different way, and are basically posting things that worked for them, regardless if they'd work for someone else. There's no real way to learn how to draw and there's no end goal. You won't ever make it because there is no "making it". The great artists who get their dicks sucked are still learning and stop improving once they think they've "made it" or simply die. Teachers are still learning and are teaching the techniques they have learned and continue to refine themselves. This is the ultimate truth and applies to literally everything in life.

tl:dr The ride never fucking ends
>>

Older people are sometimes the best people you can talk to. If you wanna learn from their life experience it can be super entertaining.
Meeting new people is always scary. The more you do it, the less scary it feels to say "hi, my name is -". What's the worst they can do if they don't wanna talk? It's not like theyre gonna DM the other 7 something billion people on earth and tell them you're a gross perv.

Go travel and stay at hostels mang, don't chain yourself down with commitments. Everybody else that's traveling through a strange country is also just as lonely as you. Just say "hey"
>>
>>3067328
But some techniques have to work better than others, yeah?
>>
>>3067335
Well drawing circles every day will get you better at drawing circles. There's a reasonable amount of common sense that comes with it. The techniques are all based on "practice and study". It's how you do it that'll be best suited for you. If grinding fundamentals everyday is your thing, do that. If making a portrait to your best ability is your thing, do that. There's no way I can say "doing one this one thing will be better than doing this other thing" because I don't know you, how you think or work or function.

nostrils from 3/4 view? The way I do it is picturing a slanted trapezoid. See illustration provided, bottom left drawing.

You basically "mold" your own nostrils based on that. You say yours is either too long or looks flat. Then draw something that falls in between those two descriptions because that's how you see it.

so, break down the shape. And drawing is also similar to sculpting. You start off with basic shapes and you mold around it the way you see it.

There is nothing wrong with drawing from the wrist. The fingers, wrist, elbow, and shoulder are all legit ways to draw, but they have a time and place. If you're drawing on a small tablet, elbow and wrist are pointless, you're not accomplishing anything, you should limit elbow and shoulder to larger pieces of paper, or canvas, or a 22" or larger Cintiq.
Wrist and finger drawing is for doing fine details and working on small areas. Cross-hatching from the elbow is fucking useless and wasted time.
This "never draw from the wrist" bullshit meme needs to die, now. Anyone who spreads it is doing more harm than anything.

Your pic is in one point perspective, that means that horizontal set of lines has no foreshortening, so on the closest horizontal line you can mark equidistant segments with the ruler (or equal space divider) and shoot foreshortening set of lines towards VP from those markings (or check existing ones same way)

Nope. Wacom doesn't allow pens that are compatible with their tablets, that I'm aware of. They're fairly specific within the Wacom product line, too - a Bamboo won't work on a Cintiq, for example. Most of the critical tech for non Cintiqs is in the pen - the tablet itself is fairly uncomplicated and cheap to make.

if your chicken scratching on a paper why do you think you won't on a tablet? no it wont help you. Make an effort and use your brain when you draw and just don't chicken scratch. if your line was shit erase it and do it until it's good and there's only 1 line

So I found that putting my flow setting to 31% on cs6 helps a lot when getting a feel for doing the line work similar to a pencil. However, this doesn't stay true when i use my paint brushes.
Is there a way in the individual brush settings for me to replicate that feeling with one of my brushes or am i stuck with having to switch the flow setting on and off?

Can you make free tiers with rewards on Patreon?

You'll be able to do a line, ctrl z, redo the line, etc.

It probably won't improve your confidence, though, which is important for nice dynamic linework.

In the ball and plane section from fun with a pencil, loomis tells you to divide the head in 4 equal parts but when I look at the models he divides it into 3 equal parts and one smaller (the hair division) Am I getting something wrong?
>>
>>3072640

i'm looking at it right now and it seems pretty straightforward.

Part 1: distance from the top of the skull to the hairline
Part 2: distance from the hairline to the browline
Part 3: distance from the browline to the nose
Part 4: distance from the nose to the chin

the reason the top-most line seems smaller is because the angle on head that he drew is being affected by perspective. he's communicating that the amount of space is still equal, just foreshortened. does that make sense?
>>
Why is it that some days I can be improving and making decent (at least compared to my older stuff) art and then other days I can't draw a single thing without it looking like utter shit? Even if it's a pose or subject I've drawn before. Do I just need to keep practicing and it'll go away?

I already know that I need to show progress and inspiration, but is there anything else I need to look out for?

Any resources that explain what makes shapes look good? People are talking about making the abstract shapes that form the work look good, about how good painter is a good designer etc. but I can't find something that would have guided my decisions. I understand that it's important to menage your tangents and to make silhouette look clear but aside from some other stuff that I can't remember right now it's mostly a guesswork.

For a specific example: let's say there is pic related, girl with gorgeous hair, and i want to depict the feeling of it while not copying it pixel by pixel. What things should i pay attention to to ensure that the end shape is aesthetically pleasing as well as retains some of likeness?

Second question: anything on simplifying stuff? I'm beginning to understand that determining what should and shouldn't be depicted is important but aside from values/contrast/"business" of things I can't quite grasp what should I be aiming for. I'm sorry, I know I'm not forming the question in the best possible way, but like what questions should I ask myself when i want to depict something, how do i decide let's say the thickness of line, or how much of a curve should be there etc. Anyway, thanks.

idk for video game portfolios, but for most portfolios, lots of life drawing. maybe drawings of objects or buildings or landscapes if you got em. real life shit that shows you actually know or want to know how to draw and don't just trace anime. if it's a vidya course, some photoshop digital paintings might help since that's the bread and butter of the industry, but they probably teach you that when you get in

bad advice. chicken scratchers need to be banned from using erasers. a lack of confidence and dithering over getting a drawing perfect is why their lines are shit, an eraser will only exacerbate the problem

Is it worth fixing the way I hold a pencil, or does focusing on fundamentals matter a lot more?
>>
>>3073197
Op here, if anyone could post examples of there portfolio it would be greatly appreciated.
>>
I know my fundamentals have lots of room for improvement- anatomy, construction, weight, movement, etc. And while I'm not happy with my progress, I'm still progressing. So that's just, I presume, a matter of patience and hard work.

On the other hand, my linework, coloring, and shading doesn't seem to have progressed in a long time. Worse, I don't know what I can do to improve things when it comes to this. I mean with sketching, sure, I could spend a lifetime improving it. But I don't know what's wrong with my inking, and how to make it better. Does this make any sense? It's like I've hit a wall. Advice?

It's much easier to get an ergonomic posture with a regular tablet though.

I recommend tracing stuff and doing that wave->oval exercise (draw a long wavy line between to parallel lines and fill the spaces with difference sized circles, try to be accurate) to get used to using one.

Also make sure you have your keybinds setup right so you can pan/zoom/rotate the canvas without thinking.

I vastly prefer CSP, but I make comics.

If you're only ever going to do illustrations without any text, Sai is adequate. That said, CSP is super cheap, especially when on sale.

Think of all the retards that have made it before you and ask yourself whether you're objectively inferior to them
Remember that there are no excuses in getting good; gullible idiots don't have an advantage in discipline that you can't make use of, attention whores don't have some wrong kind of motivation that you refuse to stoop down to, hacks don't trick their fans in a way you find too immoral to replicate
Until you've made it you're just worse than them

analyze by copy. looks like a mix of old fashioned farytale illustration (western) and asian mangastayle.
outlines are inked and there's some light crosshatching, furthermore the coloring is like aquarell means watercolor - but could be digital too.

not talking about the figures themselves yet.

pretty long way to go if you're not familiar with anything of it all. but a long way starts with a little...

Hampton.
>>
>>3073230
I think what you're talking about is contour - the "outline" of the figure. Contour is where you can adjust the shape of the overall figure into a pleasing shape. In the pic attached, you could draw the hair as a solid object, and just draw the outline, and use some creativity to make the part where it cuts off on her shoulder look better, and then do the same for the blouse, and then the face.

Simplification is a personal choice, it's where the "art" happens - one guy's choice won't look good, another person's choices make it look awesome. That's just pure experience, intuition, and talent. By practicing over and over, you can learn what to edit, and why. Every artist is making a series of choices throughout the creation of a drawing or painting, nobody draws something perfect the same time, the process of creation includes editing in your head and on the paper.
Starting out, keep it simple, then it's fewer choices. Over time, add more detail, and study if they work or not. Learn how to focus the viewer with detail and composition - anything outside of the focus is less important than the objects in the focus.
Every painting and drawing is an experiment, where you should be paying attention to what your choices result in. Experience helps you edit. Critiques help you catch the stuff you missed.

>adjust the shape of the overall figure into a pleasing shape.

What are the guidelines to a pleasing shape? I mean i can often feel it but it's almost random for me.

Also not really related but worth a shot.

>Every painting and drawing is an experiment

I feel like the experiment aspect of things almost gives me a mini panic attack, I want to make everything right from the first attempt and i get really anxious when I try different stuff out. I understand that this is very unreasonable and i'm working through that atm, still I'm wondering if anyone worked through something similar?

I've been drawing every day for a few months now (years overall) and lately it seems I've gotten nothing but worse and it's getting to the point where I'm getting really frustrated and acting overall like a retarded baby. So my question is would it be better to take a break from drawing for a week or two, or just keep drawing and hope I can break through it? I literally have no idea why I'm still such a shitty artist I should be at least decent at this point but nope.

How does one go about liking an artist and aspiring to draw like them without blatantly copying them?
>>
How do you come up with poses? My mind always seems to fall back on the same shit
>>
>>3078904

Copying them for practice and then applying what you learned to a new subject.

Combining elements of one style you like with elements of another.

99% of 'original' stuff you see is just someone who's managed to rip off enough things that it's different.
