TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I don't know what exactly makes this look weird. I think it might be the weird door or the excessively slender guy. The wall also looks a bit too empty. Everything else is pretty good. The guy just looks so shit for some reason. I guess it's just his anatomy that looks amateurish.

The car looks kinda good though. Did you use a reference for that?
>>
>>3048058
The dude's anatomy seems a bit strange. His right shoulder is dropped and long while his waist is stiff, makes him look unnatural. His foot against the wall is too low or something, it feels like it's levitating and not like it's grounded against the wall. The leg that connects to the floor should maybe have a more straight angle? It also feels like it's disjointed from the rest of his body. Maybe use a reference for that pose, although cliche it's probably tricky to nail down, since the weight of the body is partly resting against the wall..

The wheel we can see f the car doesn't feel in perspective either, feels strange. The light's better than last time but if could be even brighter near the lamp. Also, from that angle, wouldn't the cast shadow from the thingy on top of the door be a lot bigger, since the light is right on top/behind it?
>>
>>3048071
What the fuck does "excessively slender" even supposed to mean?
>>
>>3048076
In this case his clothes are too big
>>
>>3048076
I think he should be a little more robust to be realistic. He looks too thin. His suit is also too simple. He just doesn't look right to me.
>>
>>3048071

Definitely doesn't look as shit as that, m8.

Nice. Much better. You should just fix his legs/feet orientations now. Some more dirty marks in the wall would make it more realistic too.

No amount of fluffing around will help you to understand what it means to think in 3D overnight. The more still lives you do and the more you try to internalize it, it'll help better. Using a value-friendly medium like charcoal can also be beneficial as it forces you to think in value rather than just lines like you are now.
>>
>>3048155

If you're the same guy from last thread, then you are improving a bit. No point continuing to grind them for now if it frustrates you so much, you can always come back to it when you have trouble drawing similar forms later on and do what >>3048164 said too

>>3048236

Have you googled 'people hugging' or 'people kidding'? There's thousands of ref pics for things like that since it's something a lot of people struggle with. >>
>>3048546
>is rendering just messing around with it until it looks right?

no. think of rendering as building on top of previous strokes, not "messing around."

learn rules of light and values, learn to use brush strokes efficiently. every stroke should add something useful, every stroke should be made with the understanding that they will underlie some next set of strokes and contribute to the appearance of the final image.

I would suggest trying some hard shadows. The whole thing looks soft. Try on the hairline, on some of the curls etc. Mess around a it see if it will look any better
>>
>>3048534
I find this visually appealing already. But if you wish for more try emphesising. Like animators do. Such movements and poses arent really natural but they do emphesise the beautiful aspects of the subject. Try think what is it that you like about a whale and emphesise it. Ipersonally like the fact that its so long and its tail, so I'd make it curve even more for example. Try it, see if anything comes up

Insects and other wildlife, no joke.nature has some incredible designs so draw inspiration from it. For example add mosquito legs and I dunno.... puffer fish spikes on the top.
Tons of stuff you can mix, just try to keep in mind to not go too crazy, be sure all the parts have a purpose for a what appears to be a war machine. So i dunno you could make the spikes discharge electricity or blow out smoke, maybe because of the many legs and their design it will be a really stable machine so its hard to knock down so maybe make it a tank, add something like a tortoise shell or maybe a sea conch.
Go nuts anon, nature is a great ally.

>>
>>3048622
Construction. A lot of stuff is off because you went bit by bit drawing the body without thinking how it all connecs in the end.
I recommend making a basic skelly and some basic shapes implying muscle shapes and then adding the skin on top of it all.
If you really wanna finish this and want to focus on just rendering for now, add in more red/purple etc. The skin looks very dead currently since skin is made up of many colors and hues. Keep on placing down rough shadows as correctly as possible and render it all nicely. Other than lacking construction I believe your preperation for the render is sufficient (pls take not im also a beginner so...dont quote me on that)
>>

I must admit anon I thought it had a few terrible mistakes but turns out theres more lines marking how it will be in the end. Tr to tone down a bit on the chicken scratching if you can. As for the piece watch the curves. The human body is made out of lots of fat that "rounds" everything up. Be carefull around the butt and back to not cut it too sharply.try remembering where the big muscles are like the biceps or large fat stores and where it folds. Tight and going inwards near a joint (elbow, wrist) and expanding in betweel then. (Mainly lookin at the arms). Keep going

Just finished the first semester of life drawing offered at my CC. Worked with charcoal (for like the first time) on 18x24. I'm currently reading "Keys to drawing" and I was thinking of drawing on the right side of the brain next. Should I skip that and go straight to loomis?
Also fabric is an issue, but I figure I should work on the fundies first.
Thoughts?

aight first don't be afraid of contrast, use a bright white for the highlights, we're talking metal after all. To make it non boring details and color differences go a long way. like for example don't use strictly black><white, use like a very dark blue etc.
For parts that are protruding add rim lighting. Here's my attempt

sorry that they're not in English but if you just analyse whats different step by step you'll see it's very simple. ask if you don't understand a step or something.
As for the work itself the whole image is kinda skewed in one direction. primarily the upper body.
I suggest using basic shapes and constructing before going into the actual work, so you can place everything correctly and see if it works together before going in too deep.
Good luck

>>
>>3048990
If there's a total blackout, the least of your concerns will be grinding Loomis. It will be food, water, shelter.

Loomis is not a bible. It's just one book, out of hundreds of thousands of "how to draw"books printed over the years. Reading it doesn't make you special, and while a lot of try hards here fetishize it and meme it to death, you can be an accomplished artist without ever reading it.
>>
>>3048622
Your anatomy is poor at best. The feet and hands are cop outs and lazy. Your lack of understanding of the human body and muscle masses is readily apparant. Not including a head is incredibly dumb. Your colors are all wrong, skin is a peachy base with warm and cool colors defining highlights and shadows. Your lighting is completely off, wrong, and in some ways impossible.

This is way above your skill level. Learn to draw the body accurately, then move on to rendering in color. You're literally just throwing color around with no idea why you're choosing to put it there.

If you're working from a reference please post it. If you're trying to create this from scratch, just stop, you aren't skilled enough for that.

If this was submitted in a class I was teaching, it would get a D at best.

draw in the entire structure of the nose so you don't make the mistake of making it look flat, the width of the eyes is fine, right around the muzzle is where things can be worked out more, underneath the nose is the cleft i think? push the lips further up and to the right because it doesn't line up. I'm making a program that gives me drawing challenges in the form of 3d rendered forms (heh) to copy. It adapts to my results. The better I do, the more complex my challenges, from copying the angle of a straight line to accurately simplifying an extreme pose of a realistic human figure.

I will use myself as a guinea pig.

If you have any ideas for challenges I could put in, feel free to suggest them. Mostly anything you can think of is probably technically feasible, if not with a simple algorithm, by using an off the shelf GAN/CNN/RNN.
>>
>>3049754
Umm. I dunno try to add in some "texture" challanges? Like make it shoot out a 3d or 2d render of a ball or cilinder of for example fur or different kinds of rocks. To get better at recreating texture using light and shadow.
my 2 cents
>>
>>3049759
yeah, that is already in the plan. it will use realistic PBR materials, realistic textures, it will have environmental stuff, (rocks, yes, but everything from streams to mountains), it will have lots of different materials to render (from skin to metals passing by fur) with different lighting setups, different camera angles, different perspective distorsions and so on.

everything will be procedurally generated.

What I'm asking is more about abstract stuff. I have planned stuff for (curved) lines, ellipses, polygons, circles, simple 3d form boolean additions/substraction and so on, but I don't know what kind of abstract exercises artists usually do.
>>
>>3047706
I just wanted to say thank you for the redline, it helps a lot. I wanted to post fixed version but it seems I still need to study more.
>>
>>3049761
well any of my more abstract warmups for lines and stuff is all like "just do this", not really anything needs to be thrown at my face or generated.
Sry anon maybe somebody else has a better idea for that than I do
>>
>>3049780
>thrown at my face or generated
the advantage of the generation is that the program then grades you and is able to give you material around your skill level containing more of your weak spots and less of what you are already good at.

the idea is that a machine learning algorithm should be more impartial and better than you at judging your art.

I downloaded a bunch of programs to see whether everything was working as intended or not. I think I'll try to get good with Clip Studio Paint I think as I read good things about it.

Anyway, does anyone have any tips or advice? Like some sort of course, stuff I could read or whatever I could follow to reach a point where I more or less know what I'm doing? I don't mean drawing-wise but more like tool-wise. I'd just really like some tips, guidelines and advice if possible. Thanks for reading.

I'm generally just a doodler, but I watched a few of Alphonso Dunn's hatching videos on youtube and I want to start doing stuff like that. Should I buy his book and a thing of pens/sketchbook and go at it?

I've been doing Draw A Box lessons for a couple days now and I know my, well, everything is bad. Wobbly lines, terrible line weight, constantly over/undershooting, badly misaligned perspective/depth, constantly doing corrections even though the lesson says not to. What I'm wondering is whether I should keep moving forward in the lessons and hope these problems slowly correct as I go, or stop here and keep practicing these first couple of exercises until I have better pen control?
>>
>>3050099
stop self doubting. you have potential. drawabox is about grinding, but NOT mindless grinding.

redo these first lessons. when in doubt - REDO THEM AGAIN.

Here's what people don't tell you. You don't have to be perfect at each lesson to move on to the next. You just need to understand the point of that lesson.

Also lesson 1 and 2 is meant to be a warm up before any practice you do. 1 to 2 pages, 20 to 30 minutes everyday. This will make your line control better. You can increase or decrease the time but don't skip it.
>>
>>3049813

You can't see the mistakes in those? It's a very beginner mistake.

There's multiple level in the beginner stage before you break into intermediate. These anons are still beginner.

Even if you can perfectly copy a ref but produce shit imaginative work. You're a beginner.

Your art is too stylized, is that a midget? a child?
tell us what it is or what its suppose to be.
all we can do is make assumptions of whats it should be and you can just deny it by saying "its suppose to be like that"
