Its actually doing pretty well, especially now that Tumblr is really dying.

The thing about DA is that most of the people who use it use it are artists or people who want to follow artists, so while you won't have the explosive numbers you can get on instagram or twitter, most of the people that do follow you will be far more likely to commission you.

I follow a number of artists in the 3000-5000 watcher range who consistently fill their commission slots.

DA is also really great if you mostly do original art. Their front-paging algorithm is specifically tailored to promote non-fanart works. On tumblr I occasionally get like 1000+ notes on a fanart with the right tags but on dA my original stuff is way more popular.

I definitely will give up on the idea. Just wondering. I was just thinking about how I'd do it.

1. Pose a female character in Daz 3D with required anatomical attributes

2. Take into zbrush and sculpt some (minimal) clothes on her. Probably sculpt some anime features on her face.

3. Render that shit in Keyshot.

Turns out social media is not the way to become art-famous, that shit's for drama and bait posting that gets a million reactons in a day and then become buried forever by the deluge of attention whoring native to those websites. But you can always go back to your favorite pics in deviantart, find them in a second and watch them at full resolution whenever you want.

I agree that it would be better to be able to do it by hand! But I think it's okay to "fake it till you make it"... Make good pieces for your portfolio and study doing anatomy and other stuff on the side. It's also good to learn 3D for other reasons.That's what I'm doing now...

Proof? I don't know any "popular DA artists" I know artists who have DA accounts but aren't popular. It's the things they work on that are popular.
