when you paint, think of sculpting a piece of clay rather than putting down flat lines that don't have any depth

Depends on what kind of lines you draw.
They can be lines that sit on the flat surface of the paper and look like your subject.
Or they can be lines that curve around the 3D surface of your form, revealing its edges, textures, colors - and the paper is just kind of there to aid you in the process.
This shift in your way of thinking is what we call learning to feel the form.
