People here often talk about techniques for drawing, rendering, etc. but no one ever talks about how they think of what to draw in the first place. Now I'd say that I am a decent artist but what I struggle with the most isn't perspective or anatomy, it's good ideas. I feel like my idea generation very amateurish. I just think of a character, like a wizard, a pose, an angle and that's pretty much it. I don't think about the enviroment, the atmosphere, the details until much later which often leads to a very disjointed drawing.
So I'd like to ask, what is your thought process when you decide to start a new project? What is YOUR way of coming up with new ideas?

I mustered my autism and made a primitive random generator for when I can't think of what to draw.

Good shit, can you share?

It's really easy to make. Here's a little tutorial I made, there are probably plenty of ways to improve it if you know what you're doing (I just winged it).
>>
Two main ways.

a) Worldbuilding. Come up with a world that you can fill with a metric fucktonne of different ideas and scenarios, more than you could ever draw. Pull ideas from it.

b) Think of something that gets my dick hard.
>>
>>3025231
just to go off the example in your op, think of the environment first and then create the character that lives in it instead of the other way around.

> I want to draw a wizard
> is this a medieval world or a futuristic wizard world
> I hate harry potter which is modern day so lets do like ancient roman times wizard
> let me research what ancient rome is all about and get some ideas from that
> i like the teal n orange style of troy, would work great with teal colored magic
> etc etc

You ask questions. Thats the secret. What is this, why is it this way. Then you stretch it further, you bring in resources and references that you can either do the opposite of, copy, or combine two.

My best original drawings always came out of other media I consumed. There's no other way IMO, you gotta spend at least some time experiencing media (analytically, not passively) just like a good writer should do a whole lot of reading. Things that you like will give you that creative spark and the sooner you embrace the fact that you're part of a neverending river of storytelling rathert than a unique snowflake who needs to reinvent things, the better.
>>
>>3026402
but I thought the spark came from the ligameme
>>
>>3026446
It goes without saying that all the inspiration goes all the way from the brain through the ligameme and then comes out as art much like Spider-man's webbing.
>>
>>3025231
Recently whenever I can't think of anything to draw, I've started to look through random crappy sketches and doodles I've done in the past that I forgot about and never did anything with. I dunno why but if I'm trying to fix and improve a shitty idea, I'm much more creative than if I try to come up with something from scratch.

People who have trouble visualizing and imagining (Aphantasia) tend to have a sharper mind for rules and algorithms than others.

It's true for me. I cannot visualize for shit. But I realized how creative I got when I had to follow rules. I realized this after seeing the rules for the Road Runner. Pic related.

Then I tried inventing my own for my own fictional show. And I had so many ideas that I couldn't stop writing them down. It was like having writer's diarrhea. You're free to try any crazy shit you want as long as it is within the structure.

You can also invent subsets of rules for tone, characters, props, etc. Even for something as basic as porn. For example, these are some of the rules for a set of hentai I made:
>The camera must always be at eye level or above the girls. Never bellow.
>At least one of her hands must be showing at all times.
>Only use resting poses.
>Color of the background must be a complement of the girl's hair.
>All panties must have frill.
>Girls must look at the camera whenever possible.
>The camera twists and contorts the closer they are to orgasm.
>etc etc etc

Then when I think about those rules, ideas keep flooding my mind.

Thank you

You aren't the only one who feels empty.

i honestly think people like you don't want to make art at all. i think your motivation for learning to do art isn't art and that's why when it comes time to actual make artworks you can't think of anything. because you never really wanted to in the first place.

i wouldn't want to speculate what you do want from art, whether it's escape from the working world, or people admiring you, or a shortcut to self worth, but give it up, you'll be happier if you just accept you're a programmer or a manager at mcdonald's or whatever it is you're going to inevitably become, leave art to the art makers eh?
>>
>>3025231
Use real life things or photos for inspiration. Brainstorm.

Your making a wizard? What's his specialty? Make up a story about him, anything. Daydream. Doesn't have to be visual at all. Then ask questions (just like a writer would.)

Ok he's a wind wizard I'll say - what does the wind make me think of. Cold. Leaves. Force, ripples on the water.

I might look up some of those things for inspiration on how to design his costume or how he moves, or whatever. I might say I want him to have a robe like a traditional wizard, then I'd look up robes and find one with a cool cut.

Etc. Just shop around, daydream. Don't listen to >>3028624 kind of advice, it's pretty mean spirited. Anyone can get into art, if you're interested in art, then you are the right kind of person to be an artist, there is nothing else.
>>
>>3026641
making me appreciate my own ability to visualize, but this is also interesting.

I never knew people struggled with visualization.
>>
>>3028664
but my whole point is the dude isn't interested in art, if he were he'd be like 'damn i need to learn to draw so i can art' not 'damn i need a reason to make art now that i can draw'
>>
>>3028689
>how can I do art better?
>dude isn't interested in art
ok
>>
>>3025231
>what is your thought process when you decide to start a new project? What is YOUR way of coming up with new ideas?

squares triangles and circles and solving problems.

every idea comes from solving a problem, if you want to make something original invent a problem that you would have to solve.
>>
>>3025231

>Read books
>Watch movies
The more, the better.
>>
>>3026641
Are you math man too? Just curious
>>
>>3025233
this
>>
>>3030626
Yes. And programmer.
>>
Let it flow from the depth of your soul.
As lightning cracks through the darkest hour of solitude.
So must be ones conviction.
>>
>>3028940
it's not 'how can i do art better' it's 'give me a reason to do art'

art is supposed to be the reason

when you're hungry you don't ask,

'how do i make myself want to eat? i've been practicing chewing and putting things in my mouth and i've gotten pretty good at those techniques, but when it comes to providing sustenance for my body i just can't think of food.'

My imagination is pretty much non-existent, so I just scribble on paper a bit and go "oh, this looks like a fat person bending over" and that means I'm drawing a fat person bending over.
