Why is everyone here so obsessed with digital painting? It's something that won't ever bring you forward, isn't it? Normis wanna pay money for art that is made with real paint colors, a brush and not in photoshop and printed out. Also it doesn't cost much to buy watercolors, acrylic paint, brushes and paper.

>>3018959
Aye, but shits expensive so I'd prefer to have full knowledge of value control and process before I start running off that 200 limited print run dolla.
>>
>>3018959
Most people here seem to have the goal to become professionals, not hobbyists, so naturally they'd have to use digital.
>>
>>3018959
normies might want art on paper but companies want art on computer quickly and easily editable. its simply more efficient
>>
>>3018959
I do both.
>>
it's more fun flexible and lenient

Well if you want to make art your hobby using traditional is fine, aint nothing wrong with that.
>>
>>3019284

"Professional" is a bit high sounding for someone who just works on cartoon and video game shit, don't you think?
>>
>>3022126
No, for whatever reason, retards like you just never seem to know the meaning of the word "professional".
>>
>>3022139

For commercial art...somewhat. Some industries still buy physical art, like editorial illustration. But most commerical art is now digital.

Traditional media still has a strong foundation and millions of practitioners, in the mainstream gallery world, and underground. Go pick up a copy of Juxtapoz magazine, every issue has people still selling physical art.

I think it's saying traditional media has gone as far as it can formally, even if digital art isn't appreciated in the mainstream yet.
But yeah posting on 4chan doesn't pay the rent.

sorry but that's fucking idiotic

tha'ts like some "well if all the words have been written down before, how can we get new novels worth reading?" level shit
>>

I am a literal beginner at everything in design, yet I make money with it as a freelancer who's still learning beyond the basics. This means it is my profession, hence I am a professional. It does not mean I am at the top of the field.

that's not a proper comparison. It's not about the content but the medium. You can still read great new novels with a screen (if great new novels are still actually being written) and the physical publishing business is in a free fall. People will always write new stuff, and people will always create new images. They can just be accessed differently.

There will always be a need for physical paintings, but the most interesting new stuff is digital. Maybe that's just a matter of taste. I don't know how most people here would answer.

Looking at this is free.

>video game shit isn't professional
you do realize it's an industry worth more than fucking Hollywood as of recently, right?
>>

Depends on what industry you're talking about. Commercial print for advertising is dying a slow death, but other forms have taken off - packaging printing is still strong, and poster/art printing, while having mostly moved offshore, is still strong.
Ebooks revitalized the industry - and then the strangest thing happened - physical book sales started to lead ebook sales. I don't have current numbers, but both physical and digital are doing well. Ebooks saved magazines, straight up. And, they're making serious dents into the art book world, with the advent of fixed sized layouts.
The only parts of the industry, other than advertising, that's been seriously hit is the resume/business card/flyer market. Small presses and places like Kinkos and Alphagraphics have disapeared. Where I live, there used to be at least 10 small to medium sized printers, from one color to a small 4 color press - they're all gone, over a 10 year period. My print reps, who work for the big commercial printers, were singing woe is me for a while, especially about 10 years ago, but the market has rebounded somewhat.

Professional is exactly what someone working 9-5 in an office and are paid salary is, like the people who work in the cartoon and video game industries. Dunno what makes you think it rings particularly high, is "artist" not a pretentious title then?
>>
>>3018959
It's simply cheaper/better looking (oils vs cheap student paint) in the long term to buy a cheap tablet and use that if you are doing colours assuming you don't go full retard a buy a cintiq if you don't put in 6-8 hours plus of work a day.

Even if you do get a cintiq, you'll save money in the long long term if it lasts.
>>
>>3024074
I'm not naive anon, but the market isn't everything.
>>
>>3022108
what a great video
>>
I prefer oil painting for serious portraiture, and digital for caricature.
I seem to get eye fatigue looking at a screen too long, but I am increasingly enjoying digital painting since I started gitting gud.
I will always love the tactility of real painting however

Should it still be called digital painting if you're not actually painting? is there another name?
>>
if you can't draw a really good muscle elf on paper you don't have a chance in this industry kid
