I think it's better to draw fan art for niche audiences to be honest. Like if you start by drawing DBZ or something it's unlikely it'll get noticed at all.

That's not true at all. Large niches have many communities online where you can post your work. The DBZ subreddit comes to mind, which has 100K+ subs. If you're work is good, you can reach the top of their subreddit easily and reap hundreds of potential new followers per post.

I try to do a 50/50 : 50% fanart of popular stuff I like (and no,not the flavour of the month stuff like overwatch & hand spinners) to attract some people, 50% my own stuff.

Everyone has their own standard of what selling out is. Don't look for validation from literal no-names on 4chan. Do what you have to do to achieve your career goals. No one cares if you take the easy way or the hard way.
