IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

is the perspective off? How can i overall improve this piece?
>>
How often do you work on your fundamentals and exercises, compared to working on finishing projects you intend to show other people.

I've been working on a comic under the wisdom that working on the comic itself would force me to practice all the fundamentals I need for said comic, but I'm not improving as fast as I'd like, and I'm now doubting that wisdom.

I dunno. Couldn't think of what to paint so I just went with the first pic I saw. I don't see how I'm wasting my time. I'm still drawing/painting, just because the subject isn't a naked grill sitting in an awkward pose doesn't change that.

>symbol drawing
I understand what symbol drawing is, but I don't really understand how to avoid it.

I'm looking at the individual shapes (ie, the white triangles beside the pupils, the triangles between the eyebrow and eye) and I'm trying to copy those individual shapes (admittedly not very well but that's why I'm practicing).

I could have sworn there was a guide showing that's what to do to avoid symbol drawing. Is that wrong? Or am I just executing it poorly?

This is pretty nice. I'm a beg but this looks a lot cooler and better designed than almost anything I've seen in /beg/.

There are just exactly two things bothering me:
- Those balls, are they floating? Is the big one supposed to appear closer than the other ones? There's something off about them, not sure if it's the lighting, seems a bit copy-pasted.
- That cigar is really big, but you made it go through a really small gap in his fingers.. he'd have to have his fingers open wider so the cigar doesn't look so flat, like a piece of paper.

And maaaybe the eye gets a bit confusing cause of similarity with the balls, it could have more defining traits, but that is subjective.

Sorry, I don't think it has improved much. References are awesome and it's easier for other people to give feedback when you use them. I thiiink it's smarter to draw quite a few references before trying to do without them, as the latter is much harder.

Anyway:
- Eyes looked more realistic on the last drawing.
- Your mouth is too far down, it's a frontal view, his mouth can't be that much below his jaw.
- The right side of your nose is falling apart? Look up nose drawing tutorials, something might click for you to not make them so flat, they should look more 3d.

I see, then maybe they should cast shadows on each other? I don't think I'm understanding Loomis.
I follow the steps in pick related, but there are some things I just don't get:
-According to the book, the hairline is halfway through the top of the circle and the brow line, but that's not true, on some art forum it said that it was 2/3 of the height of the circle, so I just try to guess where the hariline is and build from there because I have no other way to know with certainty
-The way Loomis cuts the sides of the circle, I don't think he ever said how big the cut should be, so I just guess it
-In a 3/4 view, I also just guess where the middle line goes according to my reference because I don't have any way to know for sure
-The position of the eyes underneath the browline, I also kind of just guess it is the half point of the entire face and be done with it

I'll post an example of my shit

I honestly don't understand Loomis at all. I find his construction to be weird. For some moments I kinda grasp it but then agh. I wish I had a class on Loomis where I can ask every question I have. I'm getting better at making heads just by looking at them, but I don't know if that will help me make them by imagination.

Also, which of those balls are you trying to use? The closest one to the ref picture would be the first one of the third row, but facing the other way. If I remember that picture correctly, he wasn't really looking up or down.

Is it bad if I find myself regularly spending over 10 hours on a single drawing?
>>
>>3014136

I guess it depends on the drawing anon. If it takes you 10 hours to sketch a bowl of fruit then maybe.

>>3014136
I had a drawing mini class on a really good design university and for the final project she said she wouldn't give the little diploma to anyone who didn't spend 10 hours on their drawing.

5-10 hours is normal for a drawing that isn't super simplistic, but use your time wisely I guess. Don't sketch it out in 2 minutes and then spend 10 hours rendering a disproportional turd, go over the proportions over and over til you get them right.

I also have a problem with how wide the cuts must be in a front view, sometimes I feel like I shave off to much off of the head.
And in the case of this face, it's all guesswork how wide the face is with this measuring method.

>>3014135
I mean I try to implement Loomis' building method on all face angles I see.
The pic there is just an example illustration of how it works, not intended to be used as a reference themselves.
>>
>>3014149
I understand that, but if you compare it directly with that ball which has face facing the same angle, it shows your mistakes in proportions.

Use the place where his ear would be, compare the angle loomis uses for his hairline. Your hairline is a bit higher up, and your nose is way too high up.

If you compare your drawing to the reference, you will see those two things are also true, your nose and hair are both too high up.

I guess it's better to actually understand the constructions Loomis made first, work with those, and then make your own.

Learn 1 point perspective so you know how bodies foreshorten towards the vanishing point. The arms should be in similar spots on the body, but one is sticking out too far, the feet aren't on the ground plane because you didn't accurately place them. Also you could add some textures to the bodies because you're drawing reptilian dinosaurs.

Loomis is ONE way to use construction to learn how to form a human figure. It is not a guarantee that if you do all of his exercises, you'll master figure drawing and be able to draw whatever you want. It's a step in the learning process. There's multitudes of the same thing - breaking a human head down according to it's planes and shapes and proportions, so you can understand how it works, and apply that to your work.

Do I have to have the canvas stretched like this the whole time while I'm working or is there a way to find the vp without it?
>>
>>3013724

Speed comes with practice. The more you do, the more you understand, the less thinking you'll do which will speed up the process. Don't think about shortcuts. Only find ways for shortcuts once you're good at it.

>>
>>3014296

>>
>>3014296
Create a grid, overlay it on another layer. Turn it off and on when you need to see if something is in the correct perspective. Or be lazy and just eye it, artists mostly just eye it once they understand where the VP is supposed to be anyways. Or you can keep the canvas stretched like that, whatever works for you.

I'm thinking about getting into drawing again, but I'm an absolute beginner and I was just wondering how long I should just draw with a normal pencil and printer paper? I kind of have a direction of the things I should be learning, but I don't feel like using the more expensive pencils and sketchbook paper I have at this point in time. Is it okay to just use printer paper and normal pencil until I have a better grasp of what I'm really doing?

>>
>>3014353
A simple pencil and printer paper is great. I recommend making a little stack or printer paper and then draw on the top one, not directly on a table or desk. It makes getting the right pressure on the pencil easier, as there is a bit of a bounce.
>>
>>3014353
Use whatever is in your budget. Even expensive pencils are pretty cheap, paper can be more expensive but doesn't need to be. Printer paper is totally fine unless you're trying to do like heavy marker/ink work or watercolors or something like that

If you already have the supplies feel free to use it but next time you need to buy more remember higher quality supplies wont make you perform beyond your ability.

I have a binder full of printer paper so I was going to use that so I have the other paper stack to draw on I don't like drawing without some other paper underneath as the texture of table or desk or whatever underneath fucks with my drawing.

>>3014362
I have seen some more wallet-friendly good quality stuff lurking here that I've gotten my hands on. I did buy some watercolor stuff and thick paper for whenever I delve back into that. Yea, I know the supplies wont' make me good, which is why I figured it'd be fine to just use printer paper and pencil right now I just wanted to know if I'm overthinking it because I know people use different types of pencils and paper for shading and things like that in more advanced stages but I don't think I have to worry about that right now.

Anyway, thanks for your responses guys! Happy drawing!

The feet go below the last line.. if you count from bottom to top, head number 4 should be almost finishing the leg, yours end almost halfway to head 5. That is what making the legs look so damn weird.
>>
>>3014405
You're overthinking a little bit but not too much.

Just use what you have and upgrade when you feel yourself being held back. You'll add to your tools as time goes on.
>>
>>3014405
It doesn't matter much if it's an expensive pencil or not but I highly recommend getting either a 2B or a 3B. With them you can really light and fairly dark. Trying to shade with HB or H2 pencils look like shit, and you are limited to very little grey and that's it.

That's for shading/values at least, but when it comes to everything else that you need to practice even a pen will do.

Question about markers, say I want to just fill in a sketch with a basic skin tone. Would I be able to achieve "okay" results with only 1 copic marker for reach primary color I'm using?

Basically I'd just like to be able to do some really basic fills for sketches on paper that would be inappropriate to use a watercolor wash on or if I don't want to digitally paint.

Is there a downside to bypassing wooden pencils and making my first purchase a small set of lead holders/clutch pencils? I was considering the Pilot Croquis but it seems the 22 set of Hi-Unis(wooden) is a common starter set.
>>
>>3014516
Yeah, the downside is you're wasting time thinking about materials and not drawing. That's the quickest way to not gonna make it.
>>
>>3014516
If you're a beginner there's no chance you're going to be using 22 grades of lead.

Get an HB, a 2B and a 2H or even just a 2B if you're going to be using it to shade as well. If you get deeper into pencil techniques then feel free to explore the other grades.

Pencils are cheap, you can always buy more later if you need to.

It feels you tried to construct first based on Loomis or some other measurement, then you symbol drew features that vaguely looked like the ones in the pictures.

For example, in the asian girl drawing, what's up with her right side? Why did you draw a line for her cheekbone and another one in a completely different angle for her cheek/jaw? In the picture it clearly looks like one line, yours looks like you were thinking "well hum draw circle first then add this jaw thing on the bottom". You just gotta look at what you're drawing. Ear has a wrong angle, jaw is weird, one eye is humongous, nose is in the wrong angle and too long, mouth is in the wrong angle, lower lip too thick, her neck angle is also strange.

I watched a dudes stream one time and he showed me some interesting things with layers, so I asked him myself if he could give me the PSD to study but he refused.

Meanwhile I'm stuck here trying to figure out how to get good values in my work alongside make good details as well. I'm not talking about shit like skintones but stuff like fur, lighting, cloth, metal, blood, and so on, and the mixing them in with value.

I shit you not, I got so stuck on this that I had turned all my flat colors to multiple above an opacity brush layer to get an effect but it looks terrible.

It's easy to learn how to paint if you learn values which you learn from being able to create a sphere, box, cone, etc. Colors are just an extension of values. Values create form and that's because of gradients.

What I'm saying is you need to post something you did.

How do you guys measure things in your drawings? This is obviously important for drawing from life (or photos) but I'm curious how proportions are measured for imagination drawings as well.

Every time I try to copy something, all my measurements are off. If I use a grid I can get it down pretty well, otherwise, it's misaligned. Any advice?
>>
>>3014744
By eye. Also Loomis and whatever else figure drawing book aren't memes but basis to work off of. Drawabox and perspective are important to learn too because everything in perspective can be put into a box which forces proportions because you can do the repeating box trick.
>>
>>3014749
Does accuracy just come with time and practice? Can you elaborate what you mean by "a basis to work off of"?

I know about the copying of a plane/box from Scott Robertson's book, do you also do that by eye (without actually drawing the diagonals and midline etc.)?

First time posting on /ic/, I threw together a collage of my last 5 drawings. I really don't know what I expect from you guys, but the beginner thread seems like a good place to start instead of making my own thread. I see a lot of people here drawing directly from a reference and trying to draw photorealistically, should I do the same and come back if i want a crit?

I guess what I really want is an opinion from other artists? Any comment at all would be appreciated.
>>
>>3014767
Every painting software is the same, you just blend with the regular brushes. The hard part is figuring it out in the beginning. Soft gradients just take time to do. What it is is just making a value connect to another by constantly changing the value you have on your brush, it's like adding in an individual line until it creates a bridge. Smudge brushes can work if you know how to use them, but if you don't, you'll overwork it and kill the value very quickly.
>>
>>3014778
i really dig the style, I think practicing realism and more traditional stuff could really take it to the next level, if you learn how to mesh it with the style

drawing from references doesn't necessarily mean copying the reference.
>>
>>3014761
Yeah, it comes with experience. What I meant by basis to work off of is that if you didn't have any books or resources to work off of, you wouldn't know to use a head as a measure tool or any artist technique taught in books. You would have reinvented the wheel and got your own techniques from drawing from life or copying. You can do it by eye once you've internalized perspective.

Head and Hands and Figure Drawing For All it's Worth are both the books you want to work through multiple times.

As for the question if FWAP is a good starting place I would say yes, but make sure you learn how to draw what you see first. I like Keys To Drawing by Dodson for that. To work through FWAP I needed to learn to make some okayish copies from reference first and get some basic hand dexterity. I was overwhelmed by Loomis first because I couldn't even copy basic stuff.

If you're going to spend money on props I'd suggest hitting up some flea markets/yard sales and seeing if you can buy a bunch of toys for cheap.

If you're opposed to leaving the house you can search the toys & hobbies for stuff like "random" "mixed lot" "assorted" etc

Of course you could just go outside and sketch things you see. A leaf, a tree, a rock, a bird, a street light, etc

Yea, no, let's have some standards. You can get printer paper and a pen for free in first world countries.
>>
>>3015277
>>3015281
I know. I don't want to use grid paper either, but as soon as I can I'm getting a sketchbook or something. I can't really do anything about my camera, unless you want to buy me a better one. What have I done wrong and what can I improve on for the actual drawing?

What's there to say? It looks like something a bored kid would doodle during his math class. If you seriously want to draw skulls, I'd look into some books in the sticky that talk about drawing them and maybe even getting a model skull if budget allows it.

How do I into painting lineart? Making the lineart itself is pretty self explanatory but every colouring tutorial seems to have people throwing down 50 clips masks and alphas, whatever the fuck those are, and it goes straight over my tiny head.
Using clip studio by the way.
>>
>>3015376
Well you're going to need to know your anatomy. Even with cartoony styles you need to know how parts move together and where they go.
>>
>>3015383
Make shitty line art > make new layer below shitty line art layer > color the new layer.

Chicken scratch is subjective opinion, but otherwise yeah I should probably do some more anatomy practice.

Not really, you're doing tiny scratchy lines when you should be doing long smooth lines.

Coloring is very dependent on the artist and the type of art he makes. Sometimes even the simplest coloring could be the most efficient and gorgeous.

The point was to get the general shape, not a silk smooth finished lineart. Not to mention that, again, it's variable.

NGMI 101
>>
>>3015409
Well start from making a layer below the lineart layer, and paint hard colors for respective parts. You can use multiple layers to make it more silk smooth, or just begin shading with low opacity brushes to add some depth.

pencil and paper first senpai. also pick an easier face to draw for your first time.

Try to measure angles more. Both the nose and especially the eyes aren't at the correct angles in your drawing. Try using your pencil or your tablet pen for assistance.

The proportions are off especially at the bottom. It looks like you ran out of space to draw so you constricted the legs.

Try to work on that chicken scratching.

Also, the dagger is not at the same angle as it's hilt.

Why are the lines so jittery. Looks like you still have to work on pencil control. I recommend trying Draw a Box.

Does anyone have critique for this piece? Like, what should I be looking at when I'm choosing reference images, I'm going back and fourth between like 4 books right now, none discuss it, and I straight up can't take up any figure drawing courses.
>>
>>3014602
Don't pick a blurry picture to draw. You can't see the features and can't tell where the edges are. Also your reference barely has features to draw. You didn't even include the eye. So your drawing is just a blurry nose and mouth with a chin added that's not in the ref. You gotta try to do it well or else it's just a meme.

Oh, that's a blown up version of the actual pic, I screenshotted the part that I actually worked with but the resolution got fucked up in translation.

I wanted to just focus on one part of the image to work on, should I next attempt to do the whole thing, take a larger piece, pick a new reference pic?
>>
>>3015521
>I wanted to just focus on one part of the image to work on,
I think it worked fine. If you look at the thumbnail of your drawing, it reads as the bottom half of his face. It looks better zoomed out because the shading is not very tight and clean.

Yeah try the whole face next or find a new ref with better resolution. Add more values to your drawing next time. Get some darks in there and more varying shades. Try using charcoal if you can. It will make shading easier and add more values.

Symbol-drawn eyes and mouth (or only teeth?). Overlay the images in separate layers as accurately as possible, then switch the top layer on and off to compare
