Interesting and challenging Statue/model/study references.
Preferably with an interesting interaction with light.

why do you have to identify light sources?
just copy the shapes of color m8
Moar plis
>>3011413
thats copying not studying
>>3011384
do one light at a time, the secondary light is always in the shadow of the stronger light source

These sort of sheer fabric statues astound me, every time. I can't comprehend how the artist would even go about it, the skill involved is beyond me.
>>3011251
muh dick
>>3011449
its skillful yeah but I think its unrealistic how the fabric folds into crevices (the fabric goes in between her eyelids and mouth) as if her head was vacuum sealed in plastic. It doesnt pass as wet fabric
>>3011461
I think the fabric is meant to look transparent, sometimes the stone surface is the veil, sometimes it's the skin
they didn't even have vacuum packing back then
as a note, you can download high res ones from https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/beta but you need to use another website like http://gigafineart.herokuapp.com to do it
>>3011461
Wet fabric sticking to the skin is not the intended effect. It's supposed to be very sheer and thin fabric. So the fact you can see the lines/forms of the eyelids and lips is where the very see-through fabric is on the skin so no detail is obscured by the fabric
absolutely love this one, anyone has more with multiple light sources ?
Oh yeah, a statue/figure thread... :)

Can you please tell me the difference

When you copy something, you only replicate something you see, when you study something, you're trying to understand it...
Ask someone who studied something specific to draw it from a different angle : he'll probably succeed.
Ask someone who copied a specific form to draw it from a different angle : the result will be worse because he didn't really visualize it...

Is there a video showing how to study things?
I just don't want to ruin my life by doing all of these value "studies" and then finding out that all I've been doing is copying. I still don't really understand.
>>3011925
Don't have a video, but it's helpful to think about it like this.
When you study from a photo you should convert it to 3d objects in your head which you then draw.
So: 2D from photo -> 3D in your head -> 2D on the paper.
Studying wrong, by just copying colour shapes, would look like:
2D photo -> 2D on paper.
People recommend studying from life because it somewhat forces the 3D -> 2D conversion, as your head will move, lighting might change a bit, model will move. Or god forbid you are drawing people at a cafe, cunts wont stop moving, so you must form a 3D model in your head to draw.
Life drawing would be:
3D from life -> 3D in head -> 2D on paper.

So its basically learning how to construct the object on the spot? Construct meaning the term used on this board frequently, i.e. constructing the human body?

Look at the art book thread, look for Michael Hampton's book, it will answer your questions.
>>3011945
No, I get that, I know what hampton and construction is. I'm just asking to say if construction is what I'm visually doing to study objects.
As well as the fact that the dude from my original reply said you shouldn't focus on the shapes of the reference you use, which is exactly what I do all the time.
>>3011951
yeah. So you study because it helps you to draw from imagination. When drawing from imagination you need a solid understanding of 3d space and the 3d shape of what you are trying to draw.
Lighting/material studies first need an understanding of the 3d object, you can't be struggling with the 3d shape when doing it.
>>3011951
for example, can you tell between these two pictures who had a 3d understanding of the object and who just copied shapes?

This is the difference.

Keep in mind the proportions are perfect in both images, but it's not enough as you can see.
>>3011955
I'd like to solicit your advice here concerning this carbon drawing. What advice can you give me in respect to lighting? I know this has dimension issues in the legs, and that the style is very comic book as well with fuzzy foot anatomy.

If you're pissed off, it's very fun to draw that statue.

dude that's not the fabric, it's see through, for fucks sake, that's her actual features
guys why is this so hard to find in higher resolution wtf. it's one of the most beautiful ones i've seen, but I guess it's from a nazi or something so there's that. did it get destroyed ?
