but i've been thinking about it a bit and i think it's also a kind of crutch (for me at least) i think it's very easy to make a cute drawing of a cute girl compared to most other subjects. and i think i, and probably other people, use that to trick themselves into feeling good about mediocre drawings.

yes, the only way to make money with art is to draw cute anime girls. everyone else who tried themselves at different branches of art was shunned and died of starvation eventually.

People are naturally drawn to beauty so it shouldn't surprise you that many artists want to create beauty in their work.

That said, there's more than enough tumblr art of obese women with hairy legs, stretchmarks and giant noses out there that is fetishizing and idolizing ugliness. Not to mention in postmodern art there are entire artforms dedicated to shock value and ugliness. So you really shouldn't have to feel left out here, there are plenty of artists who think ugliness is a more worthwhile subject for art than beauty is.

Get a studio job. You can make a lot more money making environments or creatures for studios than you can commissioning cute girls and porn.

You're probably Swedish or Western European, but to answer your question you don't have to draw that subject matter to be popular. You just have to be sincerely passionate about what you're doing.

People get into art usually because they have obsessions. There's something in our imagination that we want to create, often times it's the perfect mate. A rare few people are obsessed with ugly things, and an even rarer few are obsessed with the mundane and ordinary. Yeah I'm sick and tired of looking at other people's imaginary perfect waifus too, but it's never ever going away.

As you age you find different body types much more desirable, it occurs naturally as you meet new people. Like for example I don't like larger German girls but adore plus-sized British ones -- go figure, there's probably someone who is the exact opposite way.

First, nobody cares about men. Most people don't even recognize men's emotions other than anger because that one may be dangerous to themselves.
Second, the world doesn't want people to be happy, happiness doesn't sell useless products at a premium to useless people. Even the most beautiful women in the world are constantly bombarded by media telling them they're not good enough so that they'll keep buying shit.

People want what they can't have, that's why we mostly draw cute girls doing cute things in relative peace.
