I don't know if I should have the lighting like the left or right. The left doesnt really look correct but the right looks like there's too much light I think.

Also any advice for the rendering? I sometimes have trouble deciding which edges should be hard or soft, I'd appreciate any recommendations there as well.

You might find it helpful to move the arm away from the body to add in some negative space for a bit of breathing room in the silhouette! I'm not much of a rendering guy, but I also thought it might be helpful to throw in some reflected light on some of the forms, especially where there's cast shadow like on the guys' chest. Don't forget that metal generally isn't just gray and would actually be reflecting a lot of red from the guy's body! Maybe do some armour studies just to see how they reflect their surroundings and how the image becomes warped in their curved surfaces.

Does this look metal? Also, how can I make metal more interesting around the highlight?
>>
>>3004514
Yeah, it does. You got your reflections and a wide value range characteristic of reflective metallic objects.

http://prismblush.com/metal-shines/
You could always darken the area around your speculars a bit to make them pop more. You could also add some color variation with an overlay layer. The example I linked is stylized but you can always do it to a lesser degree.

I think your metal looks fine, though. A lot of what makes metal interesting is what it's reflecting - if you're not happy with the lighting conditions you've got, try to shop around for other references.
>>
>>3004144
Shade perpendicular to the form, not parallel. Your shading is already pretty weak, perpendicular lines will give you more control over it and will allow you to do a better job on areas such as the legs.

>>
>>3003342
take your time, and look at the large shapes of values. block in the larger shapes first, then work incrementally smaller. by the looks of your drawings, they are very sketch. if you want to stay with a sketch type of style, i'd say the rendering is alright. if you want to stray away from the sketchy ness.. work on your line control and shading.

I actually really love this anon, I love the concept and composition. I love the characters. It's beautiful. I was excited about seeing you work further on this since you posted the first sketch.

I'd consider going back to your values in order to get a higher range and contrast in terms of your highlights and shadows. The characters seem to be ascending through the clouds but the mood of the clouds behind the characters seems to be overcast, grey. Utilise them breaking through the clouds or light filtering through the clouds onto the characters to play around with a stronger sense of lighting. This will help the characters in the foreground "pop."

After that, it's a matter of further painting and refining details until you see fit to call it finished. The more detail there is the more the viewer's eye will be drawn to it, so focus your detailing on the characters/points that matter. If they're passing directly through the clouds you might want to think about moisture (very subtle water droplets etc.)

Good stuff, keep it up.

It's really good, but there's one thing about the composition that I'd like to adress.

Of course I don't know what you want the focal point of this picture to be, but at the moment it's the monkey on the hand.

I tried to draw in how the eye travels in this picture - your eyes normally follow the natural lines on a picture, but we also follow the direction in which characters look - and in this particular image, one of the lines of sight clash with the natural lines. This can be used to draw attention to the particular character (which it currently does - my eye always travels back to the monkey that looks into the 'wrong' direction), but it can also distract from the rest of the image.

It really depends on what you are trying to achieve.

A possible 'fix' for this could either be to adjust the line of sight so it looks into the same direction as the other characters, or to redraw the face of the monkey, so it looks like his eyes are closed/he's meditating (this 'removes' the line of sight)

Colors are fine, more a value problem. Focal point problem can be fixed with an overall stronger scene lighting to give it cohesion. Make the big guys belly have the strongest highlight and focus of the scene. Darken your other highlights (maybe even overall image, except for the belly) so they don't overpower your main focus highlight. If you use anything as strong as the belly value, it should be sparse, and only for helping define shape along the big guys head, shoulder and tiny touches on the small monkeys.

If you desaturate your image, as a test, you'll notice your big guys legs currently have the same value as his belly, and you should not do that. His legs should have a darker value. Checking your image in greyscale can help sort out this kind of problem to help develop your eye better. Unlike my shoddy example here though, the monkey sitting on the arm should probably have a stronger backlight/toplight on the tip of its headpiece.

It's a good image by the way.

No. Draw in grayscale first, but color every b/w piece you do. It's a very difficult but fast way to learn color theory. First, use a gradient map. Maybe even multiple gradient maps with masks to separate them. After that, use a "color" blend mode layer, and an overlay layer on top of that for some more saturated colors. Soft brush to paint some on. Add a multiply layer and paint in some shadows. A "Screen" layer for bounce light. Never paint in pure black and white... You won't learn shitttt.

Amateur/Starting artist here, decided to transition into digital. I've got some questions.

-Photoshop or SAI? I've got access to both but I wonder which will make my transition less (painful) and will help me the most at it.

-Do you guys have any recommended coloring tutorials? It looks so complicated to work with layers and such.

-Any good starting tips?

Sorry if this isn't the correct thread to ask these questions and thanks.
>>
>>3004612
Cool, but there are some issues with her bones.
For example the curve of her left arm is determined mainly by the natural S curve of ulna - to find it, imagine as if anconeus was pulling on the bone, sending it into a wave like motion.

>>3004928
You started learning the muscles too early, my man.
Proportion and gesture, that's what's easy to spot on a correctly constructed skeleton and if that is off, no amount of muscle detail will fix the drawing.
Bones first, muscles come later.

Nice work tho, don't let me discourage you.

>>3010084
Software doesn't matter all that much, I'd probably go with PS first, Sai for lightweight anime, CSP for more complex line based workflow, Krita for Linux users.

Ctrl+paint has a lot of good shit for beginner and transitioning digital artists. Scott's How to render, draw from life, start with values.

>starting tips
Make sure you're comfortable with traditional media, don't get distracted, start simple, limit your palettes don't over render, don't rely on undo or too many layers or it will become a nasty habit.
Stick at it, you're learning a completely new set of skills so there'll be a drop in quality of your work at first, but you have to push through.
>>
>>3009978
Thanks! I just recently started to get into a more "realistic" style so anatomy is giving some troubles here and there, I'll try to study it more, any tips or suggestions regarding to the anatomy in this one?

>>3010084
>>3010170
I've been drawing in sai for a while and I think for the transition from traditional to digital sai is a bit more easy than ps, the layout is simplier and so, however ps have more tools to play around and color adjustment options are better than the ones in sai

As for the tips I'd say to start with some testing for the tools, maybe do some studies, b/w pictures, etc, for sai I use the default brushes so I'd encourage you to try these instead of customized brushes to get used to it, for the coloring it really depends on the style you're going after

Usually you block in your shadows, then paint light under that layer and highlights are probably the last thing you do before post production effects.
As you paint, you should get a decent idea which layer types are necessary and which are redundant. Group your layers to keep them organized.
If you think you won't be moving some layers anymore, merge them together.

I like it, but though you're seeing (which is good), you're not really analyzing what you see.
The shadows don't stand on their own, they always conform to the major planes they sit on.
If you put a too bright light onto a shadow plane or a too dark shadow onto a light plane, it will break the illusion.

I know, but I didn't go in this study to learn about the female anatomy, I went in to test my rendering skills. I never do studies, this is one of my firsts.

I'd blur the photo plate (?) of the tree's reflections a bit before going in with the blending. Currently, there's some parts that are fully sharp.

Each surface has its own roughness properties, and you won't get perfectly sharp reflections in this lake water, especially with little ripples all over like that. The sharpness in your image is doubly weird considering the *actual* trees we can see are blurry, too.

Should I continue with the Loomis studies in Figure Drawing for What It's Worth or go ahead to vlippu to brush up on facial features and construction? I feel like I don't know enough about the landmarks of the body enough to comfortably construct figures in any position I desire so far. Is pic related enough to gauge what I'm weak in as far as female figures?

>>3010686
I adore your values and brushwork. Whatever it is, it has a clean look to it so far.

>>3011574
Looks pleasant so far but the colors of the foliage seem off. I think it has to do with the lack of whiteness from the clouds behind them to give a more concrete contrast in the original photo. And the ripples of the water don't seem very convincing, I'd suggest you block in the entire form in the water and then go about mucking with them again. Colors are well done; did you use the eyedropper?

How do you organize your layers?
I try to keep them in as little layers as possible with sketch/lines/values/color and a layer above all of that for details so I don't get confused. You could always group them together in a folder and even merge them if you think you can manage them from there.
>>
You ever get to the point in your art where it feels like you have plateaued and you know perfectly well that your art sucks but you also don't know what there is that you need to do to get better?

What do you do?
>>
>>3012064
Study by the basic art fundamentals.
Value, Composition, Color, ect.

Pick one that you feel the weakest in and start to improve upon it bit by bit, continue with another value and it just becomes a cycle from there. Since I actually read up what the fundamentals were I began to expand on them since I could categorize them easily enough and get a general idea of what I was needing to brush up on.

At the moment, I have little formal knowledge of color and composition besides the magic that is the color Gray and the rule of thirds.

You have some really high standards.

Something like this from my friend would be a more valid critique:

"It's really good. I like how smooth the colors are in the picture. The only things that look kind of weird are the lifesaver and the fish. They look kind of flat compared to the other parts of the picture. The background is a bit out of place too as it looks a bit lopsided. Other than that it's great"

Nice work, but the difference between this and the style you're probably going for is space.
On one hand you're creating very graphic, flat shapes with symbols and cartoony lines, picasso style. One the other you're using shadow and rendering to create depth. Look at the breast of the girl in the middle, that's a 3D form right there.

So yea, you have to decide what you're going for, a more graphic or a more realistic style, drawing symbols or drawing form.
If you keep switching between the two you'll end up with an inconsistent mishmash hitting the uncanny valley.

That's actually really great. I don't know what you mean about the face being Fucky. It's stylized and he looks like he's losing it. Like he hates being in the snow and stuff.

Three things that stick out to me:

1. I wouldn't hold an axe like that. Gravity would make the blade of the axe want to drop to the left side. You could make it a two faced axe or something but this really isn't a big deal.

2. The dutch angle looks good on the guy but it looks fucking weird with the horizontal stance of the wolf. It's like the dude is from a down angle with a dutch tilt and the wolf is from a completely different angle. Just tilt the wolf or turn the dude 25 degrees to the right so he matches the wolf

3. Your shading is really great but I'd like to see more variation of textures on the dude. Some wrapping around the shapes etc. I'm going to use Dave Rapoza's piece as an example.

Don't rush it! This looks really awesome but it could be FUCKING AMAZING with a little work. GG either way...
>>
>>3013298
thanks for the feedback. (that dave rapoza piece is good inspo, thanks, i'll push the things you mentioned).

for the 'dutch tilt', i'm not sure i really meant to do that or give that impression. i imagined that he was on a hill. this has been fucky since the beginning though so i can see why it communicates this way. gonna try tilting the wolf.

thank you so much for the crit and stuff. it helps so much
>>
>>3013302

No problemo. It really is an awesome piece as it is and I'm nitpicking because I like it.

Just need to add to the part 3 of my critique. Just gritty up the dude. His "fucky" face implies that "He's seen some shit" and I'd like to see that in other aspects of the character. I don't feel like you need to bloody him up or anything. Just some grit in the textures he's got. His clothes/hair/axe as clean as they are almost makes it feel like a cosplay even with all the nice values you've got there.
>>
>>3013305

ooh, yeah, i'll get some grit on him. he actually has been through a lot (Fitz from Robin Hobb's trilogies).

yes agree it looks cosplay-ish. :(

i'm glad you like it, it makes me feel better because i really don't right now. :/ i started off excited but when you compare yourself to where you "want to be" your head gets in a negative space. so you really helped me tons, thanks.
>>
>>3013084
Love the rendering here. Mind talking about your process a little bit?
As far as the idea for the character, I like it quite a bit. If he's a hillbilly lizard dude, I think his eyes maybe make him look a little too smart. Maybe a bit more rounded eyes, or show more white of the eye? Reads more cunning than hillbilly at the moment. The overalls are good, and the idea for a shotgun is good as well. As for other accessories maybe he needs a trucker hat or a sign or some sort of advertising for his business.
>>
>>3013290
The head and neck are not sitting on the body properly for the perspective, and probably there would be more foreshortening happening and more of the underside of the chin showing. I think you should be careful with feminine features too unless that is intentional, but they are some very full and red lips, feminine eyes etc. The body is not in the same perspective as the wolf either. The snow also is too uniform in my opinion and looks weird how it just isn't in front of the guy at all.

Thanks man. Haven't continued working on the dude yet. Probably gonna work on him for another ~6h. tomorrow. I'm only doing this basic pose so I can get some practice doing the textures and other shit for my final illustration(s)+I have some concept stuff for my shitty portfolio. I don't really have a process here. Just a shitty 10min. alchemy sketch. Shitty line art and working with 100% opacity/flow brush. I don't normally start off with color so I'm not sure this is gonna work...

I referenced Brad Rigneys lips for giggles but I'm still gonna give him proper lizard eyes. I don't want him to look like he's an animal. More like he's an intelligent being or a mutant. Like some NPC in a video game that you go for if you need rations and stuff.

I'm not really big into sketching. I made two ~10min. sketches of what I want to do in the end just so I have an idea of what I'm getting into. I just do them for myself so they're not pretty to look at. I'm doing 3 shots for this portfolio piece:

1. Establishing shot of his "Beef" stall where he sells his shit
2. A customer transaction with another weird mutant dude
3. My character sketch (the unfinished one I posted)

I'll be doing the final character and parts of the scenes in 3D. I don't know why I'm even writing this... Probably so I'll feel better when all this shit is done. Should take about a week.

I haven't done digital in a while so I was trying to do it how i've seen professionals like Aaron Blaise do it (shadow layer and highlight layer) but I think I'm going to stick do the minimalist approach since I'm most comfortable, although your idea (lines layer < colour layer < values layer < details layer) sounds pretty good, I'll try that next.
>>

>although your idea (lines layer < colour layer < values layer < details layer) sounds pretty good, I'll try that next.

Take that with a grain of salt, though. I find myself struggling to figure out a decent process for my pieces and wouldn't want anyone to follow to closely in my footsteps in that regard. I assume you know a bit more about how to lay down the foundation of your art so I'm not too worried. I've just noticed that the pieces I'm most proud of and were the most visually appealing had a simple set of layers to them.

Normal people have big toes on the inside of their feet.
And his arms are uneven.
And I honestly doubt that giving him only 4 fingers makes this picture better.
And your lighting is inconsistent - his chest is mostly in shadow, while his hips are lighted. Angle of his hips and his chest should be roughly the same in this pose.
Ear on the left side of the picture looks really flat, which is jarring when compared with the ear.
And there are some weird effects in the bg, around his body - you could've avoided that by putting figure on a separate layer. And the halo effect isn't necessary around his raised hand, since it's not lighted so much.

Finally his diaper isn't full of shit and we can't see any hints of his dick through it - you completely failed to pander to diaperfags. How are you going to make it without drawing obscure porn, Anon?
