I can't imagine the people currently here would have what it takes to pile together and make a sticky
Even the mods don't talk to us anymore

mods speak to you. it's called getting banned.

it happens.

:)

2009:
I visited once then, went away immediately because the drawings were so good and I was intimidated.

2012-2013:
I peeped in again, people told me talent didn't matter so I actually started drawing.

It was a lot nicer and also superslow. Threads took a month to disappear. We actually didn't have mods. Had to message 4chan admins when a troll overtook the board. Yes, we were so slow that a single guy could dominate the whole board.

Wasn't overrun by porn either. Sorry to point this out, but porn fixation is a symptom of deeper issues. It's a coping mechanism just like overeating or drug abuse is.

Loomis, hate threads (back then hating on Algenpfleger and Dobson(?forgot his name, that comic artist)) and a vague interest in anime have always been here. Big guys visited occasionally, like Algenpfleger popped up in one of his hate threads, BeastySakura posted in the daily threads but was bullied away because she's a successful girl.

Trollchan and the d/ic/k guy were drawn. Lots of redlining. Encouragement and patience towards newbie. No belief in talent. A few meanies here and there, though, it was not perfect.
>>
>>2998530

People were complaining about the repeated threads. Tablet thread spam and I mean each and every day it was tablet threads. A lot of namefags. It wasn't much different than it is now besides that and anyone who says otherwise has their goggles fogged.

Completely untrue. I'm also wondering what you consider to be "over run". I see graffiti threads no one gives a shit about created more often than porn threads.

/ic/ was a much leaner, meaner board back then. Lots of talent and not a shred of the hugbox mentality that's currently pervasive.
Only two generals, a page of tablet threads and anime was scorned as a dead end to learning to create. You can tell how it was perceived by the wording of the current 'stylization' generals.

/ic/ used to be a place to keep ego and Dunning–Kruger at bay, espoused fundamentals as the foundation to creating and mainly to get unabashed crit/advice from a bevy of talented helpful anons.
>>
Huh. I used to be pretty active on /ic/, then I quit for a few years and noticed they'd recently put up a sticky.

I'd say the board was full of people actually passionate about their hobby. I used to compile guides as well, although I did it mostly for my friends and only rarely for /ic/. It was a good board. I rarely browse nowadays because firstly, I'm not much of an artist anymore, and secondly, the art here is lazy Facebook "i draw pretty anime characters for attention :)" tier shit.

>I'm not much of an artist anymore

Actually you "muh anime" shitters are part of the cancer that destroyed /ic/ because your ego and dunning kruger syndrome DID go unchecked, making you think you are better than vastly superior artists just because they draw in a certain style you don't appreciate. Many of the talented, helpful artists we used to have like Timmy-o-Tool, Teal, KJK, Jace etc did anime or otherwise stylized work.

>fuck you anon have you read any of the threads? It's a SHITbox mentality. All that ever happens here anymore is mindlessly shitting on other artists without a shred of critique or contribution, or endless parroting of shitty memes that lack any understanding, relevance, or specificity to the subject in question.
>"redlines" that look like they were done with a broken crayon in the fist of a child. A massive, thick shit-smear because anon has no line control and paints with a brush that hides it.
>inb4 your irrelevant one-senctence response that fails to address my point at all. Bonus points for mentioning autism.
>go draw fucking boxes, cocksucker.

Why are you posting such terrible drawings alongside your posts?
>>
>>2998555
>It was a lot nicer and also superslow

what fucking board were you on? because it certainly was not the same one I was browsing. people were way harsher and more critical back then.
you just have to look at the current threads to see that. you got crucified if you posted anime in 2009. now we have a general for it. do you not remember Guy? he was so autistic about it he would hound anyone who posted any anime or cartoons.

>Wasn't overrun by porn either.

porn has always been a thing here. along with questions on how to break in to the furry/porn market so people could make money. that's been relevant here as long as I can remember.
>>
>>2998569
Everytime I see you say anything it's about the fact you manage the sticky. Shut the fuck up about it, no one cares.
>>
>>3001750
Porn coming onto /ic/ was actually my reason to move out of 4chan onto other forums. Went from being here daily to visiting once a month... That's why it sticks out to me. Maybe you remember the reference threads back then versus now? Now "reference" or "gesture" is erotic nude girl with touched up skin.

Oh, I forgot to mention the collaboration threads.

<< this one was my favourite

http://ic-collabs.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=scraps

http://ic-collabs-2.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=scraps

I'd return for consistent collab threads.
>>
>>3001772
Yeah, the collab threads were always great fun. No idea why they stopped.
>>
>>3001772
As someone who has been lurking /ic/ on and off for years but never put in any greater amount of time into actually drawing until now, what are my options? What other art communities out there are worth getting involved with? Forums that don't have cults of personality and aren't hugboxes where people can neither receive nor give honest criticism, do those exist?

/ic/ is shit, but I'm not sure if there are all that many better options that don't have a fair share of other problems.
>>
>>3001797
The answer depends on two factors:

1) Your skill level.

Beginner: Reddit. There’s a few options out there, look at the subreddit and see whether posts are actually getting replies. /r/Artfundamentals is neat, the only forum I know that focuses on perspective.

Generic art forums with the sketchbook section. It’s like /ic/ minus the insults - you’ll get mostly ignored and by chance get a critique occasionally. I got good crits from Permanoobs.

Check forums in your native language if your a non-English speaker. Communities are smaller and more closely knit, resulting in more interaction. (Dutchies: 9lives.be has an art forum)

2) Your money level

Do you know the quote “Nothing worth having is free.”?

What you actually want is a custom-tailored group on Skype or Facebook (maybe on deviantArt/Discord like Unmotivated Losers? Am not a member). Art friends, peers and mentors who can critique you.

The way I do that is probably not scaleable for you, but I pick out artists that are a 1-3 decades my senior and offer them money for mentoring me. Then $800 later I drop in every now and then with an update. Most of the money I make from selling art goes straight to this until I land a job at a studio. no ragrets

I suck at networking, so I just solve it with money, there’s probably a more efficient way to go about it. I’ve build a Facebook network of 20+ artists above my level, but I forget to interact with them for MONTHS so I can’t pop in to ask them for a favour. Y’know, you have to give give give before you ask. I should probably look at this and figure out a plan, ‘cause I’m leaving helping hands on the table.

>What you actually want is a custom-tailored group on Skype or Facebook (maybe on deviantArt/Discord like Unmotivated Losers? Am not a member). Art friends, peers and mentors who can critique you.

Clarifying 'cause it might not be clear - so you don't have to throw money at them necessarily. I do it because it's easiest for me. You can also spend time and patience to build your custom critique groups.

>Even the mods don't talk to us anymore

Don't speak like that! Have faith! Mods didn't abandon us! I believe they are somewhere there, invisible, watching out from the distance. They might seem absent, they might seem uncaring at times - but I believe they are there. And they are full of love for every d/ic/k because they were born faggots.

Maybe it's not them that abandoned us, but it is us who have abandoned them?

guy who made the first alternative thread here.
you have no clue.

first the alt thread was made, then pornfags slowly creeped into it and then eventually branched out into their own thread.
even the alt thread wasn't created that many years ago.
>>
>>2998555

>Wasn't overrun by porn either. Sorry to point this out, but porn fixation is a symptom of deeper issues. It's a coping mechanism just like overeating or drug abuse is.

Not really. Sunibee, JMGN, and Simon (Teal redline guy) were on here until their content got prohibited. You probably notice now because vanilla stuff isn't really good.
>>
>>3001828
Thanks for the suggestions, but I can't believe you actually recommend Reddit as a community when it's one of the worst formats for honest critique on the internet. Reddit is only good as a resource but plain awful for interaction and almost every creative sub I've come across, no matter the subject, is full of stagnant people patting each others' backs. I want a community of motivated people where you can find other artists on whatever skill level you are and have some sort of mutual rivalry with.

Permanoobs seems like a good one to keep an eye out for.
>>
>>3001921
It's not that different from 4chan.
>>
>>3001938
Except you can pm people.
>>
We should form an activist group of some sort consisted of people dissatisfied with the general quality of /ic/, who would vow to bash trolls and shitposters and promote redlining, criticism and open discussion.
A Skype or Discord group where you'd have to post work and redlines from the past to get accepted. I'm thinking around 10-30 people.
This way the community would be more manageable, their collaborative project could be a reformed sticky or smth.

I'm not very good at this, I just really like this place.
Think about it, if /ic/ gets shut down due to low traffic or some bs, we'll become homeless along with our values, ideas and principles.
>>
>>3001973

/po/ exists

>>
>>3002004
>latest reply is 1 hour ago
Oh dear.

It's not just that though, /ic/ could just as easily be dragged down by a sudden influx of normies or trolls that would turn away decent posters.
If something happens, it might be better to have like a core community, a backup, so that you can talk to specific people when you need to etc.
Maybe it could even evolve into a new forum over time, like Level-up except not shit.

It won't be an equivalent of namefagging as long as we're all anons when posting.

>>3002016
Ye, it'd have to have some prevention against going down Orwell style.

I'll keep this project at the back of my head. We can start by bashing trolls and shitposters and treating /ic/ as a home rather than a trash can.
>>
>>2998530
For some reason the first time I came here it seemed people only cared about fine arts and pottery and such. Then years later and it was more based on the shit I see today, concept art for games and movies, anime shit, cartoons, etc. besically nerd culture shit.
>>
>>3001973
no. fuck off.
even if we agree that ic needs change, the type of change each person is thinking of will not be the same. it's stupid.
>>
>>2998530
