Study perspective, apply it to a box that would be the face, build the features from shapes in said perspective. A gold bar for the nose, spheres half sunken into the skull, a cylinder for the muzzle area which the lips, mouth sit on etc.
>>
>>2998398
In the process of learning that. Just need help with this specific pose because it beats me.

It's okay if you don't know either though :)

I'd prefer to pretend to know and give a vague answer and dodge further questions until someone actually knowledgeable posts with the right answer so I can point and that and say "Yea, see, that's what I meant!"

Does anyone on /ic/ actually study Loomis?
>>
The thing is that you can't get better at drawing heads from different angles by "figuring out" how to construct them with loomis heads. It's completely ass backwards. Draw a ton of heads from reference in that angle and THEN apply the loomis head abstraction.
>>
>>2998459
Did that, didn't work. Wasted two years.

I'm the last person that should give advice to anyone but I sort of agree that trying to learn how to construct the head and then drawing him didn't work for me either. IMO the most important drawing skill is to learn to look at your canvas. If you can look at it and "see" what you want to draw, you can put construction marks where they need to be. it goes without saying that you'll have to study references as well

I'm a filthy beginner so I may be wrong, but the Loomis head is made from a sphere: imagine a soccer ball with straight lines drawn on it. If it's facing you, the lines are straight.
If you move the ball, the lines will immediately curve, because they're following the ballon shape.

I made a pic to try to explain my reasoning.
>>
>>2998478
>look at it and "see" what you want to draw
I'm a beginner and it seems to me that this skill is the foundation for all drawing.
>>
>>2998550
Y'know, that's not how I draw. I figure out what I want to draw as a concept, but then I make a bunch of thumbnails and doodles, pick a direction to go in & sketch and plot and fiddle with it.

Here's my work for reference >>2997091 >>2997094

Will see if I can find some process examples.
>>
>>2998550
>>2998559

>>
>>2998550
you're probably right, but my autistic mind tried for years to solve drawing as if it is a mental equation. Like I'd look at loomis and try to understand how to exactly place my marks, or I'd look at anatomic plates and try to understand how to draw each bones and muscles. At the end of the day, you're not drawing, marks, you're not drawing anatomic plates, they're here to help you understand what you want to draw

Did even more thumbs than you see, deleted the ones I didn't like.

what I said didn't mean you have to look at your canvas and instantly know the exact complete picture in your mind, I don't think that happens for anyone. But when you're drawing a line, you should be able to look at the line as it delimits a form, a texture, an edge. If you can only see a line you'll keep adding lines to your drawings and it'll add up to a mess.
>>
>>2998559
Okay, I'm trying to understand what you're saying. Seem like there is some kind of misunderstanding here. I'm talking about "seeing" as in seeing in your mind and on paper as you're putting the line down, not the entire concept. Just the moment you're drawing a line, you need to "see" what you're trying to do. you should have a round of applause for posting your work, tho.

seems like we're on the same page lol

I have always found construction to become useless when you get to the more extreme angles.

Maybe this will help.

I like the planning better than the end result.
>>
>>2998718
That's 'cause I don't have my 10k hours in yet, so the struggling is visible (mostly as stiffness in rendering or lines). I hope to beat that hurdle in about five years from now.
>>
>>2998734
>10k hours

There's no set number like that. You need to analyze and actively try to improve. Just drawing mindlessly could end up leading to very little.
>>
>>2998742

No. I have no idea what kind of effort that guy put into his work so couldn't tell desu.
>>
>>2998581
I've always thought that KJG is just really good at this kind of "seeing", and that's how he can draw more or less anything. He's just really good at seeing it while he draws.

>>2998395
>>2998548
Something that helped me deal with that head angle is that the neck isn't just a tube that sticks into the skull at an angle, there's a bunch of superficial muscles and the larynx that create volume under the jaw when the head is thrown back, while the two sternocleidomastoids that run parallel to that central structure are compressed so you get this strong cone shape.

It's only a very clear change of plane under the jaw when someone's got a prominent chin. In women it tends to be more gentle so watch out for that.

Also it helps to draw a plane for the base of the chin
>>
>>2998718
thats cuz your brain fills in the missing details, so the preception will be of a perfect picture
>>
>>2998734
I'd take having to learn gesture and rendering any day over compositional skills, the arrangement of values in the thumbnails is great.

Use 3d models. You can find 3d models of the asaro head for sketchup, search them in the 3d warehouse. Skull Sketcher is also really helpful.

Any way you could make the picture of the girl less apparent? So we can see your construction sketch better. <3
>>
dont waste your time learning from Loomis. Learn from Scott Eaton's 10 Week Anatomy Course instead. he makes Loomis looks like a noob. And if you want to improve your anatomy 10x faster, do real life or digital sculpting.
>>
>>2998395
Pro tip, screw the loomis method, it doesn't work beyond beginner level anatomy (imo) I bought one of these little skulls and I study it pretty often. I've learned more about the construction of the head in the last month than I have in years.

get the 1/6 scale, they're small and sturdy, great for carrying around to coffee shops and whatnot.

Same here. I drew about 700 portraits and the last wasn't even that better than the first.
I hate to see beginners following the same path, it leads absolutely nowhere.
>>
>>3002728
Why the fuck do people draw or write in coffee shops? Surely its more effective to work in your own home, no?
>>
i'm with you >>3003002, i have no idea why anyone does anything other than just buy coffee in coffee shops.

Every 3 months i get into this huge debate at work about how retarded the people hanging out alone in coffee shops are. What the fuck is their deal, drink your coffee somewhere else you sad sack of lonely shit.

just use the cube method, nigga

For the same reason """writers""' shit out terrible "screenplays" at starbucks. Looks trendy.

I draw in coffee shops. I use the other people sitting around me as reference. People come up to me to say hi and have a look sometimes. It's nice to be around people.
>>
>>2998463
Can you try looking at the shapes in the image rather than trying to figure out how to Loomis every single drawing you do. That's not going to get you anywhere either if you were never able to figure it out without it.
>>
>>3003147
Nah, I didn't properly study Loomis yet, so I'm planning to give it a shot.
