The coolest ones I've gotten were album covers - you get to meet and hang out with musicians, and you get perks like free albums, backstage passes, and t-shirts. I've had a couple albums I worked on go gold and platinum, and getting RIAA gold and platinum records for the wall is pretty fucking cool.

I've done book covers, too, and seeing my work in stores is always really cool. I've never gotten over it, it still freaks me out a little when I see my published stuff in public.

I think it comes down to what you think "cool" is. Money? Fame? Perks?

Knowing people. In the old days, you could submit portfolios to labels and pick up work, but I'm not sure if they do that anymore - almost all of the work I've gotten is by word of mouth, and knowing people - it's almost always the manager who contacts me now. It's not easy to start out, but once you start meeting people, it gets easier. I had friends who were in garage/club bands, I started out with them, and grew my network.

IMO design jobs for fashion, architecture, furniture, cars. Concrete objects that are used and seen in the real world.
Cool 2D shit would be magazine/book/album covers, posters, comics.

I think concept art for film and games might be cool as fuck to look at. But you'll always be overshadowed by other people of the projects like directors, actors, lead designers, etc, that it's really quite sad. So even if the art and finished product is cool, the job isn't (at least in my opinion).
