Hey, does anyone have a full copy or a torrent link for Simon Lee's "Sculpture Techniques - How to Sculpt Dynamic Characters " on StanWinston's School? Here's the link to the youtube preview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfi4d8NGSZs
I'm getting into sculpting, and I love his work. The price is just too much.
On the topic of sculpture, does anyone in here sculpt? Share your work

You're not ready for the Lee material, or the STan Winston material, it would be wasted on you as it stands.

You're not even in rough draft stage of sculpture yet.

Advance past sticking blobs of clay on wire with no familiar forms or shapes, then we'll talk intermediate sculpture. Then when you master that, then we'll talk Lee or Winston.

Post your work then.

It's more for interest and personal advancement of knowledge really. You're right, I've got way more to learn, I just started. I'm trying to. I want to watch so I can glean some knowledge from it, that's the whole point.

What clays are you guys using? Polymer, oil/wax based?
I'm currently using chavant, and I really like it so far. Just bought plastilina hoping it would feel the same. Pic rel is super sculpey firm.

Has anyone worked with aves expoxy sculpt?
I use sculpey, but was thinking of trying different materials.

Is there a wire in these?
Looks like they could break easily. Could you even make something like this without a wire?
>>
>>2980819
You mean an armature?
I would imagine that the anon had to use armatures in those sculpts because sculpey is a pretty heavy clay.
>>
>>2980819
Yes, the cat's tail was made from epoxy only, and there's also a wire holding the wings. His skeleton has an 'S' shape, filled with aluminum foil to reduce density.
For Pearl the skeleton wire is a single piece, only the head is detached. The chest and hips were reinforced with plumber's epoxy to support her limbs.
I've never tried working without a wire, I'd just mess my shit up.

>>2980838
I see, thanks.
>>
>>2980289
I prefer modeling wax. Sculpty is just too rubbery for me. Modeling wax can produce better textures and vastly better surface detail, and you can go further without needing armature.
>>
>>2980810
I'd like to try it - I've been following Jason Freeny forever, and he uses epoxy clay - I'm intrigued by how hard it is when dry - but the short working time is intimidating.
>>
>>2980886
Interesting, I'll look into it. I like sculpy because of its rubberiness, I just don't like how soft or easily fucked it gets. That's why I like chavant, it's like sculpy but firmer and more like plastic

National cheap oil clay brand. Bought that last year, this year bought another block and the quality dropped hard, it's all waxy and it seems like he melted all kinds of leftovers. Guess I'll just need to pay the heavy international shipping for Chavant.
>>
>>2983280
okay, thanks. looks incredibly cool.
>>
>>2983166
The painting product? How
>>2983280
Isnt supposed to be waxy? I just bought my first block a couple weeks ago, how much did the quality change
>>
>>2983510
All the previous I had were more similar to monsterclay and chavant, where the texture is more like regular modeling clay, slightly less rubbery than sculpy. This one is very different, by waxy I mean it plastic like, very rubbery and hard to blend it.

Also to smooth sculpĂ˝ I have used turpentine before, and someone suggested olive oil. For oil clays I use regular solvents. For Monsterclay there's a specific product that Monster Makers offers.
You use brushes to smooth it.
Flame over the surface with a torch will also smooth some stuff.
>>
>>2983531
Shit, i mistakenly thought you were referring to chavant, ignore my comment about getting a block. Still interesting though, what brand is it specifically? Is it cheaper than say chavant, sculpy, or generic plastilina?
Didn't know you can use turepentine or solvents, ty for the heads up
>>
I've been a /drawfag/ my entire life but sculpting seems way more intuitive to me and I'd like to try it but I don't know where to start.
>>
>>2983615
I feel ya on that man, I just started not too long ago myself. My humble two cents is to find inspiration; something you really want to sculpt, or achieve. For me, that was Simon Lee. Then grab some clay. Find non-drying/ wax and oil based clays, like Sculpey/ Super Sculpy, chavant, monster clay, etc. Sculpey is pretty standard, and great when starting out imo. Air-drying clay cracks when drying, and generally causes problems for most modeling. . Tools are pretty subjective, there are "starter" kits and stuff at art stores like AC moore or Michael's. You can make your own, whatever suits your needs. Grab armature wire, it's what can support your sculpts. Gauge depends on the scale of your sculpt, up to you. Maybe some cheap small wood bases/ platforms. This is all assuming you're going for sculptures like the pics in this thread, but that should generally be enough to start off. It's all learning and growing to need more from there.
>>
>>2980886
what kind of wax are you using? are there differences between brands or can you mix your own? please show something youve done!
>>
>>2983615
Get some Sculpty, and start making forms. That's how they teach you in sculpture class.
>>
>>2983704
Microcrystalline wax - or modeling wax. Most art stores will have it, it's usually about $20 per pound. You can make your own, there are different formulas, depending on what you want. I took a class in lost wax casting in bronze, it's where I learned to use it, we made huge batches of it for the whole class. I forget the exact recipe, but it was beeswax, rosin, and I think some paraffin. Rosin for hardness, and I've heard you can use petroleum jelly to make it softer, more like real clay. We also learned how to make our own tools in the forge, with roundbar, and grinders. It was a pretty fucking cool class - the teacher worked for Disney making miniatures and sculptures.

I don't post work here, I don't post anything personal on 4chan, and most of the stuff I've done was in the form of sculpture doodling, where I melt it down afterwards. I havent cast a piece in a long time, it's something I'd like to get back into doing at some point.

There's tons of youtube vidoes on it, wax sculpting has been around forever - DaVinci and Michealangelo both learned using wax in the beginning, and DaVinci worked in wax for his larger bronze statues.
>>
>>2983704
this looks exactly like the stuff we used in class. We didn't get big blocks of it, tho, they had a big marble tabletop, where you'd pour the wax straight from the stove, onto the table, and it would cool fast, then you could cut it into sheets.

I'm still using the wax from college, it's like 20 years old now - still works like the day we made it. I've added to it over the years with commercial stuff, like the pic I linked.
