Just start with very desaturated colors and you'll get a feel of which colors you want to make stronger.

For composition I recommend Drawing scenery landscapes and seascape's by jack hamm and for colors scholisam like someone already told you.Specifically start with advanced lightning with sem nilson ...but before a.lightning maybe do shading curse by Scott Robertson.Good luck

Start with color theory. It sucks, but learn it. Then move onto color composition.

If you can find it, the Disney book "The Illusion of Life" goes into color for their animations, as their people were some of the best in the world - and it all comes down to just trying it. A color composition can just be areas of color, blocks, instead of any detail. That's where you work out the overall color scheme.

I was taught in the schoolroom, so I can't link specific books, but there are plenty around on both subjects. But just putting color to paper is good, too.
