Look at objects around you under harsh light, and you'll see how shadows appear over the form in conjunction with the location of the light source and the form and details of the object of observation. You draw cartoons, so in this case, look at wool and skin. Figure out where your light source is, and see how the shadows appear on wool and skin. Art is mostly common sense.

There are innumerable resources and tutorials on the internet for you not to have some idea how shading works and is implemented in drawing/paining.
The truth is you have not tried to learn. You've sat on your laurels, drawing sparingly, or when you want attention.
Either practice with earnest or become content with being in the state you're in.

I cant find this icon anywhere on my photoshop toolbar but I've seen a lot of people having it and using it when shading stuff.

oh ok, they just sort of added a lot of white, and white makes colors less vivid, and thus more dull. i don't know if they painted white over the top, or it's transparency, or they could have even just dialed up a color with too much white in it, that's why i wasn't more specific.

That is true, but does that apply to surroundings as well? Highlights make things look more vivid to me because of the contrast, but is that wrong? I'm honestly not really sure what you meant still, sorry. Maybe you mean it's desaturated?

Person who drew it here, quick run down of what I did:
Lines, Base blue colour, for shadows I did darker, less saturation, and slightly cooler. then for highlights, I did slightly warmer towards cyan and slightly lighter and painted it over, and lazily blended it a bit.

For the hair/wool/clouds? I started with a grey then put some darker stuff on then a bit of a highlight.

The white background does throw it off a bit, though, I dunno.

I could have used a bit more saturated colours as a starting point, though, I suppose?

by dull i meant the opposite of vibrant, which is more of an abstract thing than saturation. i didn't mean that he shouldn't use highlights or anything like that, just that the picture wasn't very vibrant and i thought it was probably because of how s/he applied the shadows/highlights, as people often make similar mistakes when they're working from a mid-tone, although in this case it's not a big deal at all, like i said.

Don't worry! I didn't take it as a big criticism at all. I certainly agree though, (even though it was a quick piece just to meme) it does lack saturation in the skin, especially compared to the original piece, and having a "lot" of shadows significantly reduces how vibrant it is.

Although, I was actively trying to make it darker/grimier to juxtapose with how the original style was bright and happy, so I drew a borderline non-con scene, as is tradition.

But, I do appreciate your critique and especially your explanation of it. it made me think a bit more about how I work which can only be beneficial in the long run.

The only thing you will learn from me is a bunch of bad habits.

Maybe some general pearls of wisdom - Do whatever it takes to draw a lot. For me that means copying shit and comfort zone drawing. Other anons draw a lot but have better discipline, and they make real gains with focused studies.

I've logged a lot of mileage "studying" from animation frames: KLK, TTGL, and wolf smoke animation. For 2 yrs all I would do is copy cool looking animu pictures... I started going to figure drawing class recently, but it's too late the damage has been done - no fundies all animu it was fun but not recommended.

I love inking, it's my favorite part of drawing so that helps the most. I also spent a lot of time "studying" favorite artists: monsta Julien, artem solop, Andrew mar. Copying shit is pretty much all I do.
