It's hard to make cgi look like 2D, but is it hard to make 2D look like cgi ?
>>
Difficult, probably. But possible.

Not sure why you'd want to, though. Cgi isn't really an appealing look.

Damn I remember a time when that was considered mindblowingly good. Industry skill levels are rising so quickly it's insane.
>>
>>2949744
well, I want to understand why 3D looks so "3D", you know ?

is it because the way of how lighting is applied is too "perfect" ?

excuse my english.
>>
>>2949751
It's got more to do with a lot of edges that are too sharp and an overly clean look
>>
>>2949749
Well it's technically impressive. I don't think I could do that. But it's also boring because it's too much rendering. Imo, at least.

no

and no

That level of skill will pretty much land you a job anywhere. Don't get stuck on the /ic/ mentality.

That is still pretty damn good though.

I remember way back in 2006, people were creaming themselves over pic related on deviantart.

This doesn't look 3d to me. It looks like a painting with depth, but I wouldn't mistake that for a 3d render.

Yes it's still good but it's not as impressive as it used to be.

>>2949765
DA reactions as a measurement of quality is kind of cheating though.

I thought you were supposed to use a color blending mode layer over the underpainting, but I just tried it, and I have no idea how to get the color to not be shit.

Is there a good tutorial for this somewhere? Or what is the name of the technique?
I know the underpainting is called grisaille in traditional mediums.
>>
>>2950274
This is not the same as an underpainting. Its basically painting ambient occlusion before adding the local values. If your colors look like shit its probably due to the incorrect use of values and not the hue itself.

>If your colors look like shit its probably due to the incorrect use of values and not the hue itself.
I don't think you understood me.
I'm saying I have no idea how to apply flat colors to the ambient occlusion (or vice versa).
Are you saying AO is the top layer, and the flat colors are the base?

And I still don't know what to search for.

I think it's both.
Lighting that shows form and material and is applied accurately and consistently. That's probably enough for looking convincing in a thumbnail. Under scrutiny of a closer look it's edges and overall clean, smooth rendering (a lot of masking), no brushstrokes obviously.

Here's some that I think have a cg look to them. Pic is Jason Hong.
