Depends, there are many other options, none nearly as consistent, like patreon, sfw comissions, small freelance gigs for icons, portaits, etc.
No good reason not to aim for industry quality tho.

I have a friend that frequent conventions. They make their money by mass producing buttons with art covering a shit ton of fandoms all drawn by him. Him and his family make all their income this way. They cover their costs the first day and everything is profit after.

Think. A dollar per pin,people usually buy a few. Multiply that by well over 1000 of people each day.

Art is doable. It doesn't have to be an industry job
