is the pursuit of art selfish? is so, is this necessarily wrong?

it's already difficult enough making steady progress in a field as lifelong as art, even more so with a lifetime of self-esteem problems and depression. my family, especially my brother, have already labelled me as an egotistic sociopath who knows nothing of appreciation, interested only in art to stroke my own ego. i don't even know where to begin to tell them how i don't know how they've come to such a childish conclusion and how it is such bullshit. even so this looming presence of negativity makes it even harder to commit oneself to creativity without feeling a sense of debilitating guilt and being inherently misunderstood. how is one to feel the freedom and joy of life itself vital to uninhibited, pure creation, to feel the motivation to self-teach through it all, when one feels the overwhelming burden of regret and guilt for imagined crimes?

nice blog post, it seems like you'd fit right in with every other teenager here.

i just like drawing cute, sexy girls.

no art is just personal, so it can be selfish or not depending on the person, all this stuff you're feeling has nothing to do with art just with you, and most probably your teenage hormones

Not gonna make it.

is the pursuit of shitposts selfish? is so, is this necessarily wrong?

it's already difficult enough making quiality posts on a board as repetitive as /ic/, even more so with a lifetime of self-esteem problems and depression. my anons, especially my anon, have already labelled me as a talentless hack who knows nothing of loomis, interested only in art to draw anime pornography. i don't even know where to begin to tell them how i don't know how they've come to such a childish conclusion and how it is such bullshit. even so this loomis meme of negativity makes it even harder to commit oneself to creativity without feeling a sense of debilitating guilt and being inherently devoid of fundamentals. how is one to feel the freedom and joy of life itself vital to uninhibited, pure creation, to feel the motivation to self-teach through it all, when one feels the overwhelming burden of construction and guilt for half-assed perspective?
>>
I don't understand your question. Are you asking if it's wrong to use art as a means of self-fulfilment? And why do you associate with people who talk to you in the way you describe them?

>how is one to feel the freedom and joy of life itself vital to uninhibited, pure creation, to feel the motivation to self-teach through it all, when one feels the overwhelming burden of regret and guilt for imagined crimes?

Nothing wrong with being selfish and greedy. You can't smoke weed and hug trees all day long.

Everything is selfish. Everything people do, they do for money, prestige, advancement, it's never about "the community". And to attempt be completely selfless, to give to the community and only to give, you end up feeling unfilled and walked on by life, as people will constantly take and take and take and leave you empty and one day you'll wonder "why am I doing this?" as it is common for people to bleed you dry for everything you've got. A degree of selfishness is required to function and enjoy life. It is in selfish values that one is able to define their purpose for living. If you lose sight of your purpose of living, your mental health will decline.

Your problem is very easy to solve. You are being judged and you don't like how they're judging you. You have different values than your family. Move out and live on your own. There, no one judging you. If you're too young to move out, then start setting up plans now (where you're going to go, how you're going to get there, what kind of income you can get to support yourself) so you can get the fuck out as soon as possible. Convincing them of your values is useless. You have to show them, through actions, what you are. A father who does not allow a son to be an artist due to the "starving artist" stereotype, will change their opinion on art, if the son becomes a well paid artist. It is not until you do, that they will see.

Your family thinks you're a sociopath, obsessed only with your art? Then show them, that even when you are immersed in your art, you are willing to make time for them, when they need it. That is, if you value your family. It's very likely they hold this opinion of you, not because of your art, but because you are ignoring them when you shouldn't be.

That said, yeah, you do sometimes have to pick between people or your craft. What's more important to you, OP? If your craft, then don't cry when they call you selfish. You made the choice, live by it.
