While the regular universities seem like the superior choices (you can major in shit that actually helps you IRL and do art fun on the side) the STEM is a major turn off because I literally don't give a shit about it and would rather not spend 2 years and a couple thousand dollars on it.

>No actual art school near me
>One art center I have had very old people in their beginning class(Like 50s old)
>They aren't even there to learn, but to refresh. They already good at other things anyways(like painting)
>Decide to take up a Drawing 1 course at my community college
>The teacher straight up has us draw Michelangelo and Leonardo drawings
>A way to get their style. Think what they were thinking.
>Weren't even taught how to even do anything yet.
>No value, anatomy, nothing.
>That was all we did, For most of the class
>He would always talk about history while being passive aggressive on modern society.
>Meanwhile most of the kids are already good drawers on their own. I have no clue why they are even taking the class because they clearly don't need it.
>Feel like a learned more by myself than the actual class
>Best part was actually learning how to do perspectives. But that only lasted one week.
>After I was done, I felt like I wasted my time.

I don't know what to make of it. It felt like 500 dollars down the drain. I really question the teaching method. I mean, if I could just copy then why the fuck did I need to spend money for it?

Master studies are always a part of Drawing 1. And in art you always learn more than the actual class, it's just there to guide you.

This is pretty normal it seems, I've taken art classes at my STEM school where it was nothing but copying or practice, well painting was, wood, metal and glass classes actually taught me little. I did them mostly to force myself to enjoy a hobby I otherwise wouldn't spend time on since STEM is brutal. Don't ever take community courses unless it's directly about some branch like construction or perspective or it's for access to live models.

Also OP, don't step foot into STEM unless you're passionate about it. Even then you'd go through hell, be burnt out and wonder why you're trying. Stay away from generic classes and classes from small colleges or ones without actually fleshed out art departments. Seems like art schools in general only teach techniques and you'll still be shit unless you do the practicing in your own time which will be harder with minutia busy-work and you'll be forced to do what was originally a source of fun, turning it into a chore and ruining motivation for it (going from a physics background but I'd wager it happens to everyone forced to do what they like past the point of interest). Teach yourself if you want to be good, most professional artists never went to art schools and at the end of the day the portfolio matters more while the degree itself is useless unless you can prove you're good.

I'm sorry anon, you got meme'd. It's always a good idea to meet the teacher and ask about what he believes in, how does he intend to lead the course. He might even show you some of their work, and if it's a bunch of terrible life drawings, there's your red flag.

I'm doing computer engineering, if I wanted to take some art classes, what should I look at? The art school at my uni is supposedly quite good. I was looking at taking digital art with one of my friends, is that a good idea?

I recommend media arts/digital art classes because most of them give you free access to high grade programs, so you can avoid the piracy route if you have a nosy ISP..

Thanks anon, I'll look into that.

If you want to take an art class at a STEM-focused school, make sure they actually allow non-arts majors sign up for those classes. At my university (hugely focused in engineering and agriculture), there was one 20-some-seat art 101 class that only the football players or honors program students could realistically get into because they had enrollment priority. All other classes were closed to normal students and you would have needed to send in a portfolio, go through a long application and interview process to get into the design college.
Try to look up the art courses offered at your university and use either a university facebook page to ask people's experiences, or check koofers or rate my professor to see if the classes are helpful.

My art school is /ic/

I know to do the digital art class you have to send in a portfolio at my school. I wonder what sort of level they expect you to be at though?

I would consider myself intermediate level, I have no idea if they just want to make sure you aren't totally incompetent or see if you're actually good.
