i use to use them for ID renderings in school.
the right paper is everything, ink should STAY wet on the surface (for a few seconds), imho Canson marker pro layout is great for this (copics). Though everyone might tell you it's Bienfeng 360 used "flipped over". If you use the wrong paper it absorbs all the ink, makes blending impossible and just ruins your markers life.

how do you choose what color sto blend, is there a list of good color combinations somewhere? i bought some kurecolors based on what i thought and they look like shit one next to the other.

that's just color theory, lookup watercolor advice since it's also a transparent medium.
