When you do a study (let's say a portrait), do you focus on copying it perfectly or just making something similar but at the same time understanding the idea?

Depends what I want to focus on learning. If I want to focus on my observation and accuracy I will do a literal copy. If I want to focus on something else I will take many more liberties with things.

I try to line up everything as perfect as possible.If it is a portrait study then I prefer realism. Measure everything, make sure your lines and curves always intersect and meet in a way that has parity with the original work just my 2c
