At least in my version of SAI, saving a file as .PSD means you will from then on be unable to save anything else until you completely close and reopen the program.
I tend to only save a file as a .PSD when I'm done, but I've forgotten from time to time and work on other things like an idiot.

Not in my experience, I've tried saving as all file types on the rare occasions I've continued working after saving a .PSD.
It never works. There's probably a work around I don't know about, but I just play it safe.
