Now's your opportunity to prove that you're still gonna make it.

Post a picture or diagram of your progress and let /ic/ be the judge.

Starting out with some classics.

looks like he forgot to teach you about your edges fa malam. lots of mistakes like the distance between nose and mouth and how some values are kinda muddy.

about 11 hours, 2 hours for block in then the rest were from corrections and passovers with the help of others, it's my first digital painting taken to completion so I know I work really slow for now, but I'll speed up now that I have practice.

>>2886472
I looked at the jpg I posted and the full res and saw that the jpg is really blurry, I took a screencap of the painting and resized it for the thread, but the full res has sharp/differing edges. Thank you for the critique and will keep those things in mind for next time.

Do you still draw anime
>>
>>2886442

>>2886498
Values can be muddy too. It just means that the local value of the object is ambiguous because the values are wrong like maybe the halftones are overstated or something. I don't really see it being the case in that image though, maybe a bit on the kerchief around the neck but otherwise it looks alright to me.

If I got to go back I'd draw more, and get out of the comfort zone way more often.
>>
>>2886852
Are they bad or good?

>>2886857
Basically I did a lot of photo/grayscale studies and did studies of the old masters. Then imaginary sketching to apply what I had learned
Learn to take things step by step. In 2015, I had absolutely no understanding of how colors or values work (or form for that matter) and it wasn't something that I should've been attempting to do at that stage. I realized this and didn't touch color for 2 years, instead focusing on making my drawing/forms/values better.

Also, inhale the art of others (old masters, art that inspires you). Spend a good few hours just looking at paintings/whatever.

2014-2016. I feel my biggest mistake has been not having a focus or theme, really just knowing that I like drawing characters, but never grounding them in stories, situations, putting thought in design, etc. Took online classes in early 2016 which gave me an awakening - but still terrified of not having the skillset/mindset to "make it."

I guess that's just the difference between someone who pursues their dreams and goals and someone just giving up and all.

I just treated it as my hobby for the last years... but now that I'm about to turn thirty I hate how bad I draw... so last September I started to put a lot more work and afford into it.
>>
>>2891418
That's really kind of you thanks anon :<
>>
>>2891391
It looks like your painting skills are improving steadily, you're able to convey atmosphere with it. Your a paint first kind of artist it seems.

You're real bottleneck though comes down to drawing. A lot of these are not drawn very well, and although it's gotten better, it's still lacking some basic things. Your characters have a tendency to look flat which seems to be from not being able to draw the forms well.
>>
>>2891463
That's a really interesting observation. I kinda ditched the whole artwork painting thing last year since I really wanted to do comics. I guess I still have a lot to learn until I can find the right way to draw figures...

An artist I paid to critic my work (yeah I'm so desperate at time) pretty much said the same thing you just did. Maaaan I wish I had a bit talent in the fields that interest me. I worked a lot with Hampton and Loomis trying to get my character drawings more interesting.

Only if that's all you do. If you only draw from imagination then you're not learning anything new, it's best to draw stuff from ref and then try to draw it from imagination so you can understand what you're doing wrong.

I only have book I religiously read and it's loomis figure drawing for all its worth. Painting is something I picked up along the way.

I generally just compare my stuff to some of my favorite artists like kuang hong (when I was younger) and joseph paton now.

I just draw short burst of stuff everyday to my sketchbook.

Might be because back in 2013 I usually spent days on a drawing.
Today I want it finished in ~3 hours or I'll get bored and start drawing something else.

>>2892499
Thanks for the info! How do you keep from becoming derivative if you look closely at one artist at a time?
>>
>>2892471
More interesting designs and penmanship (that's sadly ruined by that horrible colouring).
Sort of slightly reminds me of Katsuhiro Otomo.

The other two are just generic concept art nr39496
>>
>>2892508
I guess things like that comes naturally if you draw long enough? I am really quite unsure on that one as I always see my stuff as generic trash and it always makes me feel upset about anything I try to do recently.

I think I maybe in a slump but I'm not really sure...

>>
>>2892531
That's really nice of you. I already started reading up on forms. But right now I'm still working through 'drawing with the right side if your brain" and 'a noble approach."

Beside that my husband has finally agreed that i can draw him! drawing from real life here i come!

So yeah... the past is bleak but I can't change that anymore... time to work on my art gains anyway!
>>
>>2892513
Hope you get out of your slump. Wish I knew what to say, but I don't know the cure for art slumps either. Good luck
>>

If you're in a slump go back to the fundamentals. Draw from reality. Learn the real deal. You'll feel more confident and it will help you progress a lot faster.

So, been drawing all my life.

All from the magical land of imagination. So, I suck. I still love doing it.

I am also an engineer (cs) and also love programming. Also bad at it.

I know this is isn't /adv/, but pls help this lost 22 year old out.
>>
>>2892630
That's actually what I'm doing for 5 months now. I think this is more of a work related stuff rather than an artistic struggle.

>pls help this lost 22 year old out

Sounds like you already know your problem. At least if you are an engineer it means you have money, so you can afford to buy some proper art books/materials/tutorials. Might be worth buying a subscription to something like New Masters Academy or Watts Online to start off since it is guided.
>>
>>2892640

Well even if you are short on cash there is nothing stopping you from improving on your own. It's easy enough to find pdfs of books and torrents of videos. Pencil and paper is cheap. A used tablet and torrented software is cheap.

The Scraps section houses a lot of older stuff. For a while I was drawing on /f/lockdraw to get used to drawing on a tablet. Had some fun over there. Some of it is from 2015, some of it is from 2016. Very little of the scraps is from 2017.

The images in the main gallery are from this year.

>>
this thread looks extremely depressing
9 out of 10 times drawings are 100% copy paste from reference and the 1 out of 10 times of the drawings are from imagination which look extremely bad
most of y'all cant even draw, the ones that do look good barely have any sort of realism to it and are just basic cartoony bodies which you draw mainly cause you lack any real realism skill
y'all need to start git gud or drop drawing as a whole since you aint making anything worthwhile beside your cartoony-ish faces anyone can draw
>>
>>2897839

>>2897839

whatever you tell yourself to sleep at night buddy
>>
>>2897839
I think it's selection bias. Good people often don't bother making these comparison images because they know that their work is good and stands on its own. Mediocre artists like putting these together because their work is bad but when they put it next to even shittier work they get pats on the back for improving.
>>
>>2897844
funny thing is, the only thing they improved on is they stopped symbol drawing and use references for basic proportions, which can be done from like Day 1 of drawing
>>
>>2897843
You are the one who seems to have trouble to sleep at night, friend.

i do, gives me only more reason that i should improve instead being "content" with mediocre drawings 8billion people on earth can alrdy draw
>>
>>2897844
>>2897848

Good artists usually don't feel the need to put those less skilled than them down in such a pitiful, bitchy way either though. Below mediocre artists like to talk shit about those who are slightly better than them because they have insecurity issues and easily get jealous and spiteful.
>>
>>2897852
Kek, you are that faggot from the other thread who is mad at people who have fun drawing. That explains a lot. I can already tell you, this mindset you have will not lead you to live a happy life and in the end, you won't improve much either. Being angry and jealous all the time is the very thing that will make YOU always stay mediocre, if you can even reach mediocrity at all and not give up earlier.

take a figure drawing class for a year and you'll be pretty gud. It seems your problem is understanding the forms your drawing. Best way to improve is to draw from real life.

Not them, but you're not really drawing forms, you're drawing stickers. It's not quite symbol drawing since you're obviously aware of it, but you're not going to improve or be able to draw anything more complicated than that if you don't practice drawing from reality. For example, in your "Surprise" middle drawing, you've drawn two pecs next to each other, and an abdomen, but you haven't done any work connecting those parts. More glaringly, the shoulder on the right of the image is only connected to the torso loosely, it's merely next to the pec, and the side of the body has been turned into a gray wipe-away, rather than actual anatomical drawing. It's why your drawings feel disconnected or plastic, and it's why the hand on the right of your final drawing seems to float above the shirt sleeve, rather than extend from within it.

TL;DR You've reached as far as you'll go if you don't back up and learn anatomy.

Focus less on painting and spend a lot of time on drawing and improving your draftsmanship and gesture, perspective/construction, and general anatomy (nothing too complex). You've delved into painting into wanting to making finished, perfect illustrations when your drawings just aren't solid and lack a sense of depth, form, and any real sense of story. Composition is getting there, but still not where you'd want it to be. I'd say with your studies, instead of painting of full portrait and calling it done, do 20 heads in a sketchbook or if you really do like painting; make it 20 small heads and paint them with a light, dark, and midtone gray (3-tone value scale).

i admire your progress, gives me some serious nostalgia however through it your art still seems quite flat? it seems like you kept a bit of a copy paste feeling of flatness, just some advice maybe study form and color values, just from looking at your progress i can see that your eyeing off the colors rather than understanding the depth of them. that's not to say that i don't like your work, i love it, especially the space girl and your little character designs are cute. but maybe to improve draft your ideas more in your sketchbook [the toned goes really nicely] play around with them, get a feel for the environment etc. keep it up anon, i want to see your art in the draw threads.

fullheartedly agree with what the other anon said but heres a quick tip, when painting digital environments/background elements, zoom the fuck out, like make the canvas tiny af and don't zoom in until you have what you need/adding tiny midgets. good luck anon, 3 years so far so good.

Online

>people are only into traditional stuff so they can't help me
that artist got me into studying traditionally as well as digitally. I'd like to have the cash to spare for an atelier kek. One of his recommendations for me was "draw 50 heads a day in your sketchbooks until you understand."

>>2905503
I learn as much as possible, when I know the big general things I tighten up the tiny things and constantly ask myself questions, too.

examples:
>understand form
>study planes of basic shapes
>study planes of face

>what values are in this black & white image?
>if I turned this colored image into black & white what value would this highly saturated light orange be?

Mindset is a big deal, if you think you're good, you're going to keep producing things of the same quality, if you think you're bad and need to study to get better then you're getting better.

Not that guy but the improvement isn't huge. You've cleaned the lines up and improved the background a bit, but the same mistakes are always present.

The issue is that characters are mostly flat, like they're squashed between two panes of glass. You need to build a believable 3D "skeleton" and vary your angles (like the camera being below, upwards, tilted, just experiment) so that things are more dynamic and have more interesting anatomy. If you can do this and build decent anatomy this way, the next focus is using shading, highlights and values to actually build 3D shapes. Yes, cartoonists often simplify shapes and only add basic shadows, but you don't have those skills yet. For now, you need to fully build the characters before you can deconstruct them later on. Use colour theory too, with cold shadows and warm highlights.

Finally and most importantly, vary those fucking lines. Shadows need thicker lines than highlights, and linework alone should be solid, and can show so much more. In fact, go look at quality comics and how they are built. Pay attention to everything and try to understand the rules. Often, comics have a really solid linework with shadows and all, then colours are added over the top of it. But here your linework is as bland as it gets.

So my recommendation would be to keep working on your fundamentals, but apply everything to the characters. Step out of your comfort zone, and get much more information from quality comic art, try to understand it, what makes it good and so on. It's always hard giving advice like this because you might have trouble understanding what I mean, or I might miss some important aspects as to what you're missing. Hope next time you can post some massive improvement. Oh and don't get discouraged you fucking faggot. Now go draw.

I'm gonna be harsh here and say that I don't see any improvement. You've only improved at painting the exact same level of work.

It looks like you haven't studied how to draw/paint. You're drawing cartoons so maybe realism isn't so important to you. But wouldn't you want to take your work a step further?

Your paintings from 2015-17 look practically identical. So if you continue painting the same way now, you'll get better at refining your cartoons, but your work will stay at the same level. If you study the fundamentals of drawing/painting, your cartoons will improve so much. You'll be able to make them more real, grounded, your character design skills will be elevated.

You're outright copying things instead of analyzing things, you're severely lacking form and values. I'm not being harsh, this is honestly the advice I needed when I made paintings similar to yours, anon. You're doing okay for 3 years, but don't get comfortable because of my compliment, instead keep going hard to get better.

I was looking into that as well to be honest. Right now I just have a lack of confidence to mix the two. I've been checking some videos and tutorial on how to do it though to help build scenes.

what's the pink bar mean on the side?
>>
>>2910004
pink = didn't keep accurate dates on my drawings so its an estimate, but these were all crappy studies
red = copy / study / traced whatever you want to call it
blue = combination of references or based on a pose i saw
green = from imagination

drawing from life is a bit over rated

i spent 4-5 years doing still lifes and did 2 years of figure drawing, and now when i paint without looking at things, i just blank out. i dont know what color things are supposed to be, i dont know how dark things are supposed to be. all my art skills are rooted in looking at a real thing and transferring it into a picture, and my pieces that are based on imagination has to rely on crutches like anime. my ability to convey realistic colors and lighting juat goes poof when i try to paint from imagination

You're just tracing feet instead of constructing the forms. You're not learning shit from these.
