>2D will be irrelevant in the future. 90% of the established studios already use 3D programs for their concepts
Is this true?
>>
>>2880989
No and no one said this either so don't falsely present your shitty bait as if it is a quote of someone else.
>>
>>2880989
Bait, but who cares about concept art even if it was real quote? Cocnept art = fastfood of art world.
>>
>>2880990
Watch his latest videos faggot
>>
>>2880993

Which one? I remember Feng Zhu saying 3D is important, but that doesn't mean it's going to replace 2D.
>>
Partially.

The majority of what people think of when talking about studios in this context do expect their 2D artists to have at least a rudimentary grasp of 3D, usually because of it's usefulness in creating 2D work.

Is it likely that 3D will supplant 2D entirely? I wouldn't say so, but for more detailed and more labour intensive imagery, probably.
3D is fast, really fast, but when you want to quickly indicate a compositional change over a screenshot of an indevelopment build, just drawing on it is quicker.

That said, there is no downside to learning some 3D if you haven't already, it will only make you more employable.

Why a lot people even in /ic/ want to become concept artist at all?
>>
It's a fact that 'traditional' drawing will vanish in concept art. Most studios already rely on 3D stuff since it's way faster and more efficient.
>>
>>2881011
What else is there?
>>
>>2881014
>since it's way faster and more efficient.

Actually it's not. It's faster for some things like industrial design and creature design, but there are lots of areas of visual development that are simply done way faster when drawn by hand.

They have a wrong impression of what their day to day looks like. How many side views of guns do you think a project needs...and how long do you even think that takes? Preproduction is very short.

You can design/prototype in engine now and it costs nothing. Multi-disciplinaries make for good hires because they demonstrate how flexible they are to learning new tools and can help invent new workflows. If you're REALLY good chances are you're good at a lot of things. If you're struggling to learn 3D (out of your own stubbornness maybe) it tells me a lot about your character or you have some kind of learning disability.

I feel pretty similarly about him. I think it's the way he talks. He spends so much time in asialand, probably speaking asianese or at least constantly talking to people who have very thick accents, while he himself is a native English speaker, it puts his voice in the uncanny valley. He also seems to have a lot of 'public speaking tics', saying shit like "alright" a lot, which subliminally makes him seem like a robot or something.

I like him though.

It's been proven that fear/adrenaline helps memory retention. I've heard a standard application of this knowledge is to dunk a hand in ice water while studying.

This sounds like death. He's probably just jesting though and projecting that day. He must have good days that he doesn't even care to write about.
>>
The best way to make something in 3d is to have something already sketched up in 2d, so no.

At his Q&A at THU he said something along the lines of right now his competition is 25 year olds who work 70 hours a week, because if they don't there are others who are going to take their place. I honestly don't think he has a very optimistic view of the industry.

Lots of Asians who grew up in the US have this weird thing where they can't make the 'th' sound but other than that basically speak perfect English.
>>
>>2881187
he also had no clue what patreon was and refused to believe the amounts of money some people ade from it
>>
>>2881209

Image how much money Feng Zhu could make doing concept art of all kindzzz of monster penises for the furry fandom
>>
>>2881210
Considering Feng said he makes even more than the amount Sakimichan does, I doubt patreon would do him much good.
>>
>>2881209
Patreon is never going to be a viable option except unless you happen to be in the top 1% of overwatch fanart and animu horse dick futa porn artists, which much to my surprise Craig Mullins seemed unfamiliar with.

>>2881216
That's because he's smart and milks dumb kids out of their parent's money with his super elite gamer concept art dojo in ching chong land.
>>
Having modeled 3D things from scratch I've gotta say it's a pain. It's hard to design and sculpt at the same time and it takes a lot of time. It's way better to have concept art so you know exactly what you are going for.
>>
I could see concept artists being irrelevant in the future. If there were 3D programs that were fast and easy enough to use, yea. Teach some artists how to quickly lay out the concepts in a 3D space, touch them up a bit.
>>
>>2884459
???
That is literally what they do right now.
>>
Fug this is depressing. Is it even possible to make a career out of art anymore?
>>
>>2884467
>concept art is the only career route hur dur
>>
>>2884469
what other routes are there? There's illustration but I have no clue how to get into that and there's comics but the pay is shit even for artists.
>>
Just like 3D animation is pointless now since the end game will always be motion capture, game over man.
>>

Yes, thank you for clarifying my actions to this Anon.
>>
>>2884494
motion capture i.E. rotoscoping has existed since the early 90s. It didn't even manage to replace traditional hand drawin animation, before 3D animation came along and did that.
>>
>>2886365
Rotoscoping has been used in 2D animation since 1915. Hell, Snow White from the late 30s even used it.
