>artist gets mad when you ask him where he is with your commission after it's months old

Why do most artists have such thin skin and get easily upset when you ask about something you paid for?
>>
How did you ask?
>>

>Why do most artists have such thin skin and get easily upset when you ask about something you paid for?
Most don't. Maybe you should try hiring people who are actually professional instead of some kid off deviantart for $30.
>>
>>2877831
>kids can make 30$ off their art while you make 0$
Really makes me think.
>>
>>2877829
"Hey, just emailing to get an update on the Dark Souls art from September. Thanks"
>>2877831
I got him off Tumblr, maybe that's the problem. Can't handle time well? I'm trying to be nice.
>>
Ask for a refund. Pay someone else, end of story.

If they haven't worked on it and are lashing on you for even asking about it then they don't deserve it. Let it be a lesson.
>>
>>2877826
>tfw a returning customer keeps asking about where their commission is in line
>tfw they message you every day, multiple times
>tfw they are counting down the images you post because you told them how many were ahead of them
>tfw they only asked for the commission two days ago
Kill me.
>>
>>2877878
I'm scared of this happening to me. How do I prevent such a client?
>>
>>2877878
>>2877880
You DO have the ability to refuse their business.
>>
>>2877878
I think once your a month late with a commission a client has the right to bitch. For you, it's your fault for not dropping the hammer on the client and telling him to calm the fuck down and wait. If he doesn't like your answer he can go elsewhere.
>>
>>2877826
I've only been paid when I'm done with the work.
>>
>>2877909
Reconsider that
>>
>>2877864
>artist says that can't afford a refund and refuses to give you your money back
>>
>>2877909
Not that I've done any commissions but, how do you handle payment with them in a reasonable way that let trust build between both parties?
>>
>>2877919
that's why you don't pay someone without a good reputation up-front and in full. pay a little to see a sketch, when they deliver the finished thumbnail pay the rest.
>>
>>2877909
Same and i always get filthy jews trying to negotiate lower on the agreed upon price after I finish the piece.
>>
>>2877925
50/50. 50% upfront, 50% after it's done.
>>
>>2877909
This >>2877910
You want to get paid before you're done so you can pay the bills and run off if something goes amiss.
>>
>>2877886
Problem is is that he's commissioned me for at least 6 characters of his and we're on good terms.
I try to keep it all business, but it's gotten to the point where he thinks we are besties.
I've never refused ANYONE. Even when I have to read a chapter of text.
How do I let him know that he's being rude without breaking his heart?

Also another thing, he always says "it should be easy for you" when I draw ANYTHING. Which 99%of the time, it isn't.
>>
>>2877909
Do a sketch first, don't make it crazy detailed though because I've had people run off with two or three sketches from me without paying because I made it "good enough" for them.
Then if they like the sketch and pose, send them a invoice/request payment.
>>
>>2877938
>it should be easy for you
Biggest red flag I've ever seen.
>>
>>2877938
How long has you been working with him?
>>
It's because we feel guilty about it and some artist turn that into anger for some reason. I do agree it's best to ask for a refund and just say you'll catch them at a better time.
>>
>>2877938
You could just tell them you're having troubles answering you clients e-mail because "reasons". Promise them you're sending 1 e-mail at the end of the day telling about the progress and keep the e-mail as short as you can.

You got the short end of the stick. Without writing a book, I used to draw for a local comic company and I meet this client at a local comic con. He bought a bunch of my art and I gave him my e-mail and told him if he ever wanted custom covers or art email me. That was 2 years ago more or less, since then we've become friends and I even play Dark Souls with him. He's the perfect client, pays me 1200$ every month on the same day like clockwork and I work on a comic for him. The dude even gave me rent money when I couldn't find work, I would bend over backward for this guy. He's the perfect fucking client and as much as I complain about waiting months for Dark Souls art this guy has been waiting over 2 fucking years for a single commission from an artist who gives him the run-around. I offered to do the commission for him for free but he refuses.
>>
>>2877970
Lucky you. What do you draw?

For him, mostly R18 lewds from anime, short doujin like commission 10 pages long.
>>2877938
I'd also like to add (I learned this from experience) if you tell a client "I'll have it done this week or this weekend" and you don't have anything to show. It's your fault for making the promise in the first place.
>>
>>2877982
Wait a second, you're THAT artist?
>>
>>2877970
>The dude even gave me rent money when I couldn't find work

How the fuck do I get a client like that?
>>
>>2877983
YAS QUEEN
>>2877986
I got lucky and from a client who really loved what I do. As I said, I'd bend over backwards for him. He's nice suppose as well when I'm feeling like shit with art.
>>
>>2877990
I need a client that cool.
>>
>>2877946
He found me off of a friend who used to be go to me as a regular. I think around 5 months now?
I can't keep track of time, a week feels like a day and two days passing is actually five. I get confused.

>>2877959
I never promised him a timeline, all I told him was, "there are three commissions ahead of you so the wait shouldn't be long." And he's commissioned me so frequently that he knows one comm. is 2-3 days (unless no one gets back to me in time.
If one person takes too long, I start on the next one, letting that client know I'm working on theirs in between.

>>2877959 meant to reply to >>2877982

>>2877826
Are you working with an actual pro artist or a tumblr/deviantart 20 year old 'artist' who only does adopts, commissions, and fanart.
>>
>>2878063
It was another artist I was introduced to through the grapevine. Seemed like a nice person, has awesome art he just seems to have a horrible work ethic.
>>
>>2877970
>>2877982
Seriously. Where and how do I find a client that gives me "free money" or pays me monthly every month?
>>
>>2877919
Why should they care? Cancel it through cc company or paypal.
>>
>>2877919
If you do a refund via Paypal, it will take it out of their bank account or CC via negative balance if they have no money remaining.
>>
>>2878109

What's the point in making commissions? Don't you have some grand project you wanted to work on? Don't you want to learn stuff in your own terms?
>>
>>2877982
blog?
>>
>>2878312
Why not? I don't do commissions yet but I did some shit for the drawthreads on different boards and enjoyed it, learned some shit. It's good when you don't feel like doing anything, because you know some faggot out there is waiting for a delivery.
>>
>>2877982

If you're going to steal art, steal someone who's style isnt immediately recognizable and someone who doesnt have a thread on /a/ every goddamn day

He probably doesnt have a thin skin. He seems like he just wants you to fuck off.
>>
>>2877938
never done commissions but generally that way i let people know i dont like something is to be casual with it like "oh hey next time could you xyz instead?"
>>
>>2878312
It's my job. I make around $400-$600 USD average a week.
Although, all I ever get paid to draw nowadays is WoW.
It's nice when I get to draw something different. If I could, I would like to focus more on popular franchises.
>>
>>2878592
That's decent money.

I got a job so I don't need to do commissions. What got me into drawing was my dream of making some project. Drawing whatever on demand doesn't strike me as something I'd enjoy doing as a career.
>>
>>2878712
I try to see it as a constant study after study that people suggest for me to do... And get paid at the same time lol
>>
>>2878592
Why do you get paid to draw WoW so often? Also can we see your work?

It's not that I planned on drawing a lot of WoW, it just so happened that my regulars who role play it wanted me to draw a lot of their characters. So then everyone figured, "Oh hey, this person draws a lot of WoW porn, I'll go to them!"
It happened with FFOnline too and now it's changed again. I'm on my third Orc drawing.
Here's a link to my blog:
http://supermarmalademum.tumblr.com

It's hard to get publicity when your time is all taken up with niche commissions. I'd like to draw more over watch.

Also, you'll probably notice but I was on a draw thread earlier asking for help with a low angle portrait.
>>
>>2877826

>Commissioners are such doormats that they let artists steal from them

Why do most cuck-mmissioners have such you whiners? You gave me your money with no deadline, now you have to wait until I feel like finishing it. I dont care if you're upset I have 20k+ followers and I dont need your money
Don't forget NO REFUNDS.

Find a wealthy NEET or a lonely person with a job
>>
>>2877826
What does your contract say?
>>
>>2877880
Step 1: Google "freelance artist contract form", or "freelance artist letter of agreement form"
Here's the first example I saw on google:
http://yourfreelancecareer.com/freelance-contract/
Step 2: Edit it to fit you personally and your desired work parameters.

Notice the "Cancellation" section in the example link:
>Both parties understand that Client or Designer may terminate the service at any time if, for any reason, the relationship is deemed unsatisfactory by either party.

This particular form may seem a little heavy handed against the client, but it's really not that bad. Though you may want to offer a partial refund if the project is cancelled before an agreed upon start date (not a full refund, because even though you haven't worked on it yet, you may have had to cancel/refuse other commissions during the scheduled period for this one). You could say "refund minus scheduling fee" then define the scheduling fee as something like a set rate for the duration of the scheduled project ($/time*scheduled project time). These extra details and explanations really aren't necessary, but may help a hesitant client agree to the terms.

Check your local laws on contracts and freelance work to make sure you're not doing anything illegal.

If you don't have a contract, you're not a freelance artist, you're doing charity work and hoping the person you're helping follows convention and gives you your tip.

You can't NEET without money obviously anon. I don't know why people think NEETs are poor. Poor people are the ones working to meet their means.
