Are we allowed to talk about the income side of art? Like career paths, strategies for getting more money, etc
>>
Yes, what do you want to talk about?

Art isn't all that different from any other field. You do work and get paid.

>You do work and get paid.
The quantity of work and pay vary enormously for art vs other industries
>>
Strategies for getting money? I'm curious about it aswell...
What I already know : go on dA,tumblr, artstation, build a fanbase & create a patreon based on fanart or niche stuff.
>>
>>2875867
specifically, if you're making money off your art, what are you currently doing?
>>
>>2875875
the basics are covered in the sticky

It's actually simpler than people make it to be. People nowadays try to game the system since they saw money which flooded the market with copies. When in reality, all you gotta do is draw whatever you want and eventually someone will notice and ask, hey, can I get a request or a commission? It snowballs from there. A lot of commissions are behind the scenes too so you don't always see them being discussed. And by gaming the system, people do pandering and take too much work than they can handle because they thought they can speed everything. Just enjoy your work and people as well as money will come to you.

Another good method i've noticed if you're on a social site where tagging is possible is just finding a popular artist with their own OC and drawing fanart of it. If that artist's character is popular with their fans, and you're a good artist, you'll see a sudden rise in followers. Even better is you can draw characters you actually like the designs of (Or just choose popular ones).

Cause even if the artist never acknowledges you, you'll show up in their tags and tags of their character for a little while.

Do it with multiple people so it just looks like you like drawing fanart of other people's characters which is pretty normal.

It worked for me on deviantart and furaffinity before.

do followers translate into money? I'm skeptical.
>>

Depends on how good you are, how good you can market yourself, and how much you charge for commissions, and if you'll do porn or not.

This can lead to sweet sweet patreon money or it can lead to nothing if you have nothing to offer besides the fanart to keep them coming back. I mean you can't just draw someone's oc over and over to please their fans.

Just read the situation and learn to adapt. That's why it's good to choose something you like or already know how to draw so if if you, for instance, drew someone's dragon riding bikini girl and got a lot of their followers, chances are if you draw cool shit like dragons and sexy women, you're going to have those followers stick around and eventually grow.

you gotta really work hard to make it work but if it's what youlove you shouldn't have to work hard at all ;)

Livestreaming regularly will help your fanbase feel connected to you btw meaning they're more likely to donate patreon bucks.

i think personally starting a youtube channel is best, even if you just post sped up livestream footage, people love watching that shit and you'll rake in some youtube money if you can get over the first amount of followers you need to be partners.
>>
>>2875908
how much do you make? i know several artists who don't do any of this stuff and get regular work.
>>
>>2875902
Another way is discord since its so popular right now and has many servers target your audience depending upon your art, so for example I draw cute anime shit, i will go to anime servers and i try to post my work there hopefully someone PM's me and wants a request or something. This only works if you're decent enough.
>>
>>2875966
would you mind sharing one?
>>
>>2875873
It also varies within the art industry, as seen with patreon artists vs mangakas.
>>
Is 200$ per commission that's done in a week too cheap of a price?
>>
>>2875865
>how to make money
that thing you don't want to do; do that for money.

>how to make money without sucking so much dick
Have a gallery of good artwork, socialize on any website that has people who like art. post at least once a day to tumblr or facebook, and post at least once a week on every art website. Stream weekly, play good music if you don't have mic. literally talk to everyone who will talk to you. 6 degrees of constipation and all that.

Have at least 2,000 consistent/loyal followers, then do patreon, and youtube. Be a slave to your fans until you have money. 9/10 you're already doing something they like. Give no fucks about who your fans are, if your fanbase sucks, show off your interests and you'll attract more people like you.

Artists have this habit of treating people like shitty worthless garbage bags filled with money. If you openly talk to people, they'll like you more. If you work for someone, really try to build rapport. always give people a reason to give you money.
>>
>>2876914
it depends on your skill. you can take all the time in the world on something but if it's ugly it isn't worth shit
>>
>>2876940
You only need 2,000 followers? /ic/ made it sound like you needed millions.
>>
>>2875865
average pay for a commercial illustrator where im from is about 17000 a year at entry, its just finding it. usually a graphic design, textiles or illustrative background will do you best, but some industries like fashion illustration and comic art have really hard barriers
>>
>>2877024
How does one find an illustrator job? It always feels like they find you more so than anything. Unless there's job postings somewhere.
>>
>>2876940
Is there any one person or artist you know that does this and is actually making a good amount of money?

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
