So this guy on facebook claims that the hyperrealist painter Helmut Ditsch does not work from photos. I find it hard to believe since I've simply never seen anyone pull off a hyperrealist piece from imagination. Yes there are plenty of artists who can paint realistically, but hyperrealism/photo realism has a very distinct look with it's detail and sharp edges. What's your take?

maybe he does them from life?

Look at the youtube clip, it's a studio painting.

It's literally just a step above Bob Ross art. He could very well be making it up, but if that's the case then he has studied photos a ton in the past because it has a lot of the shitty hallmarks of a piece blindly copied from a photo.

I've researched realist art pretty extensively. Been studying at an atelier and seen the works of thousands of different artists digital and traditional. Yet I've never seen anyone achieve this kind of hyperrealist looking painting from imagination. It's not that I think the painting per say is amazing - it does kind of look like a average photo copy. But the visual information does not look like something pulled from imagination. Just name me one artist that does something similar.

i dunno man. its a pretty generic landscape so he can easily apply the same effects on different paintings, like Bobo Rosso, without needing a reference.
but then again, that video only shows him painting the sky and blending the water a bit. he could be using a reference for the whole picture or even just some parts, sorta like a montage
still, painting something this realistic, using a reference or not, takes an extreme amount of skill. this aint digital where you can ctrl-z every tiny mistake you do, and change the color whenever you like
