>>2868072
How do you know the muscle placements so well through the skin?
>>2868072
I assume your goals are to be able to go straight to drawing without using pencil and inking it. So why bother doing an underdrawing in pencil? Just learn to draw with pens. Who cares if you fuck up, that's what you want to do isn't it?
>>2868080
sometimes i do freehand, but with bigger and more complex pieces i want every line thought through before i lay it with ink

I wonder what goes through your type of people's heads. I could never pump out something like this.

her back looks like she has scoliosis
her face is okay (maybe her nose is off)
and hands look like crab claws
just got some doodles from the last few days.
working through this. trying to focus on crosshatching for a while
>>2868382
How do you know what kind of line to put down and where in this approach to drawing?
>>2868394
you can only cross hatch something in one area four times. | _ / or \, so assuming you've already hatched the object with two lines according to the form, to darken an area you just do one or both of the other two types of line
a lot of it is just following form, as if you were making a mesh on top of the object with the lines, but some lines taper off and don't go all the way around the object.
The hardest part is making sure lines you hatched on one side of an object match up with lines you hatched on another side of the object. that part still eludes me.
>>2868397
Try not outlining the form and pay closer attention to fading from one value to another, the outlines and blocky shapes destroy your depth. I've seen your paintings so I think it's intentional design choice like Cezanne but I hate the wonky looking plates and stuff , I'd rather you show the contrast between the organic and geometric shapes.
>>2868279
that first head is really retarded looking. first of all we wouldn't be seeing her right ear from that perspective and it's way too high. her left ear is too close to her left eye. her jawline isn't in correct perspective. her mouth is off center and is just floating on her face. a head isn't a toy where you can put the facial features wherever you want, like mr. potato head.
your linework is nice, but you're just another fuccboi who puts linework before strong drawing skills. gain some real observational skills, read LOOMIS, stop looking at anime.

this paintings so fun to edit. i think im done with it though

This is really good, anon! Welcome back to drawing, don't stick around here too much, you get stuck. :)
Also, looking at this photo from the thumbnail size, it looks like some mutant with a very cylindrical head, and a huge nose and eyes. kek
>>2869861
I don't know. I think the edges are wrong, or at least they're not accurate. The contrast between the hard and soft ones make it look unfinished.
>>2869861
I dunno, I had a play around. You could try and work on the colours a bit
>>2869808
That happens to me all the time. Especially noticeable during live model drawing sessions that have pauses during the summer and around Christmas.
You'd expect the first few drawing of the season to be complete shit since you're a bit rusty from not doing any live drawing for a few months. But they are often much better than the ones I did before.
Perhaps a pause can be good to let things settle a bit from time to time.

>>2870213
Buttplug?
>>2870211
I like it.
But I would like some darker and heavier shadows to emphasise the shapes more. Because as it is some areas feel fairly flat. Especially around the head.
>>2870224
ye i didnt shate there yet, i just finally came up with the shapes for it and shaded the mask. this angle was a bitch and im still not sure if its right- hence the post
lineweight will be emphasised more, its about 50% done
thanks mate
>>2870217
No, it started out as a bone but then evolved to large futuristic glasses. Like?
>>2870230
I really like the the idea (reminds me a lot of what I used to draw a couple of years ago), and the shading for the body is pretty good (it just could be a bit more contrast)
But that head, dude. Especially the back of it.
It might be difficult if you've already began to ink it, but if I were you I'd try to re-do it pretty much from scratch. Especially the back of the head. And I do think it's salvageable if you're clever about it.
Because right now it looks like some weird alien cocoon.
>>2870242
>Like?
Not really. It's lazy and you can't see what it's supposed to be.

>>2870247
you mean the shape of the head? shiet man i drew it so many times.. this one felt the best of em all. could i trouble you for a quick redline
>>2870250
It's lazy because you didn't put down an effort. And even if it's the first thing you did in digital just to see what that's about, it's not worth criticising because there's nothing there to criticise.
Read the sticky and gain a better idea about some of the basics of drawing. When you've got something worth criticising I'd love to do it.

>>2870266
different anon. but what you did could easily be recreated in less than 5 minutes.
Thing is we as the viewer cannot tell what your object is. sure we can see that there's small people in the perspective. but that doesn't tell us much besides a size comparison.
>>2870272
i can handle criticicm, thats why i posted itt. When I get "0/10, no effort, kys" replies thats when I tell you faggots to learn to crit. There exists people who cant provide real, valid constructive criticism.

>>2870279
>but what you did could easily be recreated in less than 5 minutes.
it was my first time drawing in PS
>Thing is we as the viewer cannot tell what your object is
not knowing what something is or its purpose doesnt make it bad. If you look through books of real objects I'm sure theres plenty of things you couldnt identify.
I purposefully went for a sci fi theme
>>2870257
Sorry for the shitty redline.
But I hope you see my point. All you really have to do is to fix the area where the skull and neck goes together on the back of the head.
Or, if you can't figure out a good way to do that, perhaps you can hide it? Is it possible to turn the weird back part into some kind of helmet?
>>2870282
>When I get "0/10, no effort, kys"
Fuck you man. I was trying to be encouraging even when your art is unironically worse than fucking Chris Chan.
The 'thing' you made has no substance that makes it possible to give it any critique. Read the sticky and learn construction and we'll try this again in 5 years.
>>2870298

oh, you're trolling. Or don't know what shape language is.
>>2870288
alright. well, start simple. stick with hard/soft rounds while you're learning no need to get crazy at the start. (rotating brushes etc) you can do a lot with just the basics.
pick up perspective drawing and start learning basic rendering/construction etc.
this added stuff didnt take too much time. keep working at it

Don't stop doing your shit mate. No matter how much hate and insecurity /ic/ projects onto you. I have seen your work before and I am really in love with your coloring and surreal settings. The bright saturated contrasts etc. I have a more realistic grounded aproach and really know my fundamentals and I love this shit. I would love to see your development through the years. Fuck the hate bro. You've got potential and a good eye for this for sure.
>>2869386
I agree. You're an idiot.
>>2870412
My dude, Brian, you gotta find another subject, something contemporary, something that interests you, that will say something to the viewer. Reproducing these still lifes over and over again (not exactly reproducing over but food, material, and vases) isn't saying anything.
I suggest looking into one of your interests outside of visual arts, be it political, psychological, or environmental it's worth looking into, explore some concepts beyond what is in front of you, literally.
You're already very skilled in painting, so I don't think it should be an issue to figure something else out. The only thing I see being an issue is conceptualizing ideas. The more you work on conceptualizing, the better you'll get.
This painting is beautiful, but I'd hate to see talent like this going towards painting bread forever. Just consider what I've said, don't take it as an insult. :)

I'm messing around with minimalist styles. I'm not sure how i'm doing. Is this to detailed? Not detailed enough? Is it at all appealing?
>>2872394
Theyre cute to say the least
>>2871719
You need to work on composition.
Avoid having the horizon line split the canvas in equal halves, that cancel each other out.
You should lead the eye by creating asymmetry and hierarchy in the composition. Your major shapes are nearly identical in size. The wall stops right in in the middle of the picture, and suggests a centered plumb line. This along with the centered horizon line forms almost a crosshair dead smack in the middle of your picture. It's a very efficient way of killing any dynamism.
You should be mindful of your value grouping too.

Hey, Reilly abstraction would help you fix your issues also looking at rl women a lot if you're going to be drawing grills. Like magazines and stuff. If you're still having trouble with heads you can go look up "Huston head construction" on youtube, it has head construction drills towards the end, too so you can practice what you learn. 10-50 head constructions a day for a while will fix you up quick. And I mean ugly, quick sketches, not pretty ones.

Could you do a draw over?
>>2873777
>>2874092
Thanks, anons
>Try flipping the canvas occasionally
I was even trying flipping it upside down and I still couldn't get it right, I also tried zooming out far and making changes, but I kept goofing up still. I think my main goof was that I tried to add textures before establishing the form and values so I kept messing up after that
>and pick less detailed models so you don't get lost in them, and don't zoom in
thank you, will definitely make this my priority in my studies from now on.
I was going to draw my apartment, but it got a bit crowded...
>>2874120
>>2874038
I mean I don't have the ref you are using (I assume, since you called it a study) so I just made this up. But here is a quick attempt at unifying the values and colours and changing the proportions a bit. I feel the biggest issue is you made the head too small, and the values in the shadows and halftones are inconsistent.

You pointed out a lot of the issues by yourself which is excellent! One thing I might add is the girl looks really stiff. Now I don't know if she is anatomically strained by the thing coming out of her mouth, but if I think if you drew her strained in some way, even subtly (arching back and some expression on her face) she might seem a bit more "fluid".
The yellow creature is very charming!
It would be cool to see this drawing redone if you happen to want to explore it again.

>>2874780
Lots of people have wolf OCs on the internet, someone on fb asked for this wolf with scars on the nose.
>>2874779
My only comments would be that wolves generally have less stop, legs for days (longer and leaner looking, can be achieved just by making the legs slimmer) and tend to be more cowhocked. Otherwise, this looks pretty good. You're better at fur than I will ever be.

Hi anon, here's my take on it, broken up into stages. Stage 1 is changes to the overall proportions, stage 2 is a rendering base and stage 3 is a lighting suggestion. If you like it and have any questions let me know.
>>2874978
Wow! Not the guy you're replying to, but thanks for posting this and a breakdown. How can I get such nice forms and brush work? Do you always go for a indirect/overcast lighting first?
>>2874991
I was using pic related brushes, the bottom one literally just for the bground in stage 3, painting on an ipad in procreate. If you're asking for methods of developing the skill or rendering forms, I'd recommend painting plaster casts from life, be it digitally or traditionally ( digital saves time and money, traditional is harder, moore fun and more satisfying) and trying out different lighting setups on them with varying ligh direction and intensity. Also the techniques used and described by Scott Robertson were helpful to me personally. Brushes are not important to me for modelling forms, but very useful for realistic rendering of textures and variations on surfaces, so there was no need for fancy brushes here.
Forgot pic
>>2875000
Do you have a site or blog? How long did the paint over take?
>>2874991
>Do you always go for a indirect/overcast lighting first?
Not always, and I wouldn't recommend doing anything always, but it's often a useful approach to isolate problems rather than trying to tackle multiple variables at once, especially if you wanna try different versions or if the subject is complex.
>>2875004
Thanks again for taking the time to help.
>>2875006

I would also add that the pasterns look too weak, especially when taking the perspective into consideration.
I mainly had issues with the fur and the overall perspective. The fur looks like fur you might paint on a side view. I can see a bit of dimension on the scruff, but the rest of the neck looks especially flat.
About the perspective, I couldn't really figure it out. I don't expect you to change it this late into the work either. I was just trying to figure it out for fun. I might get my dog to model out the pose for future reference, since I also had difficulties with this angle in the past.
>>2875108
perspective is a little different of course
hopefully this helps

Thanks for the crit.
About the perspective, his body is supposed to be half-turned so his head is in side view (actually a little past side view) and his rear is in 3/4. That may be why you're confused.
Trying to redraw something I did a couple of years ago.
>>2874779
>>2875236
Currently rear is too square-on to the viewer. You need to rotate it more to the side.
I redid my redline, with additional random notes on what makes wolves look wolfy.
Finished lineart of my first commisioned portrait but I'm afraid to fuck it up when coloring it, anyways, some crit is welcome.
>>2875274
kind of sketchy
clean your lines
>>2875262
That bottom blueline is definitely what I was going for in terms of perspective. I'll erase some big parts today and re-do them. A lot of the stuff like the precaudal and v-nape were already drawn so i'll probably leave them the same. Gonna have a harder look at some references for the fur direction also. Client probably won't mind.
I really appreciate the redlines!
Ok, does this look better? (I am the original artist not redliner). I went constructional as hell because the legs were giving me shit. Also made some changes I was concerned about like the bulge of the back/longissimus muscle area

Does anyone know the best way to exaggerate figures in perspective? I made this, but it's such a long shot from what I wanted to it to be.
I'm posting the gesture after this.
>>2875684
This is what it was supposed to look like, but the minute I applied any logical drawing to it it ruined the composition
>>2874978
Sheeeeet, thanks, man! Incredibly helpful, I will study the fuck out of this!
>>2875684
I don't you want to fix this kind of pose, anon. The design looks good, but the composition is terrible, so the piece is already bad. It's just not interesting enough. Unless you wanted to do one of those intense like fisheyed lens scenes where you see the character intensively pulling back their arm with crazy VFX wind around them like they're going to swing and cut a mountain down.
>>2875689
That's exactly what I wanted to do.
>>2875689
I think I just realized how to do it.
I have to really think about box distortion in perspective to pull it off, and I have to stay true to my original gesture and get the proportions right the first time, or else I'm wasting my time.
I'm still curious if it's better to design a figure relative to the camera, or if it's better to design a figure relative to a box in perspective.
Does anybody know?
>>2875694
I've realized I'll never be able to really draw what I want to draw until I can properly distort my designs in perspective, and it's likely the same for everyone here.
Is there a good tutorial on this?
>>2875694
Perspective and Camera are basically the same thing, anon. You keep talking about a box for some reason, like you learned from Krenz or something. All you really need to do is play with proportions and foreshortening as well as making the sword and the arm wielding it the focus of the piece. A box distorts the sharper the box's edges converge towards the VPs if you wanted to know that. I honestly have not drawn this pose myself nor do I have a reference apparently aside from a visual one, but basically play with it.

I figure objective foreshortening isn't the key to making something look good.
I guess this what people were talking about when they said you don't have to adhere completely to perspective, and it's ok to break it where necessary.
Thanks man.
>>2875709
That's good, anon. That's the first step to understanding how to properly foreshorten your designs in accordance to perspective. It's actually not as difficult as it seems when you realize again that you have always seen the world with foreshortening. Sure, it's not as easy with an original design, but you can at least use a base for example a figure, and see how your design will fit on the figure at a certain angle. It requires a bit of thinking, but it's doable. The result is also very satisfying. There are probably tutorials for this, however, you can't always be looking for those quick shortcuts. Best thing an artist can do is draw.
Late night thumbs
Hey guys, anything looks off so far? Left or right?
I've been struggling with the head the entire day and can't see straight anymore.
quik study ayyyyy
>>2875917
You need to think about how the balance works. The guy looks like he would topple over trying to stand on those legs/two little dog nail things which also look like they are in your guys face but you flipped it upside down so it's not teeth? so what is it? what is its purpose and how does the head even connect to the neck. next time before you even attempt to draw out the muscles and other details, make a silhouette, have a plan for what you are doing. because right now, its like a man kangaroo rat bug thing without actually applying any of what happens in real life to make those things work: do your research first. so what i suggest, is take one of your silhouettes on the right, base it off a real life bug and take the shapes/think about how a bug would be able to work combined with a human and start from there.
as to your actual drawing, you completely lack any sort of shape design or cohesion, other than its vaguely scifi inspired and has muscles there is no sort of "flow" or emphasis on certain parts/focal point area. attached is a starcraft protoss concept art, although it is static it looks kind of like what you are doing, and it doesn't look like it will fall over on its face if it tries to walk. anyway good luck, let me know if you need clarification
>>2875951
The head is the part I'm currently working on, the two segments were teeth but then I realized the head shape could also work upside down.
The legs were supposed to work like pic related, for added agility.
I started with a skeleton and added muscles on top, but you're right, I got caught up in detail wayyy too soon. I'll start working from a silhouette to make sure it reads.
Thanks for your time.
Just started this. How's it going?

People don't look like this, nor do they have massive thick lines around them. I can't take any drawing seriously that looks like this. Sorry. Try looking at Loomis and actually drawing people instead of cartoons.
>>2876320
There's nothing wrong with drawing cartoons.
I'm not sure if this is bait or not, but just in case.
>>2876330
Cartoons are objectively worse. It takes objectively less skill to draw cartoons.
>>2876317
Looks good for a comic book.
Bad if you are trying to draw from life.
>>2876334
Exactly my point. It's good for a comic, but if you want to be taken seriously and be good at art, stop drawing this fake shit.
>>2876317
Sorry for the quite terrible redline.
But the face is not very symmetrical. Especially around the jaw/mouth/chin. And the chin is really tiny, which I doubt is by design.

I like how it's pretty much a man with a broken tibia/fibula bone.
What blending mode do you use to color a grayscale? Hard light, maybe?
"Color" is pretty shit, as it doesn't take into account the natural value difference between different hues (e.g. blue/yellow).
>>2876490
Overlay ftw.

here anon try this.

add more highlighting and shadows. dont be afraid to use white. I added some white in the highest places( sorry its so small) but it makes the face more shiny adding to the realistic look. The best advice i can give to make pieces more realistic is strong lights and darks.
>>2875246
This makes for great value practice but I'm honestly scared of going any further because I'm not confident in my ability to detail the human body ever since I started studying again.
Would it be best to add a little touches to the bottle and values on the fetus and continue studying? I've finished maybe 2 other drawings since I stopped to make some fun pieces.
>>2873013
adding depth with shading and highlightig. It makes a world of difference.
feelin a little discouraged. spend like 9 hours on this and it got rejected. Working for someone who needs a design and I realize they probably won't accept any illustrations so I'm out of a big commission...

the dude is really spot on but the lady looks weird, pinups usually exaggerate the softness of a girls features, i'll do a blended paintover and fix some things to show you what i mean. obviously since this finished you probably won't go back to it and move on to bigger and better things, but it may help for the future
>>2876922
you got it spot on, the client asked me to redraw her face so it was looking at us and said the shoes looked weird, yeah I did get pretty lazy on those parts. I even just took pictures of my shoes and painted over them (bad idea but I was running out of time)
>>2876929
If you did a paintover I'd really appreciate it, I'd really like to get better in this style and am not sure how. Thanks Anon.
>>2876288
not sure who told you that you aren't a beginner - maybe in comparison to ic you aren't because you at least aren't symbol drawing . but anyway, when posting your pictures there's no need to frame it like that, its distracting. next time make sure the lighting is good/scan it so you can show your full value range (white-black) not like sepia-dark brown? the background should be white if your paper is white.
when you draw, since you are drawing in pencil and usually people want to get to realism/believability that way and everyone has seen those amazing russian academic drawings, the shortcomings become obvious - you are copying photo of benjamin cumberbatch i assume, and it doesn't look like him at all. it lacks appeal because of the emphasis on details where they don't need to be: like the neck folds make him look like a turtle, we focus on the shadow area of the coat and the individual shapes/patterns of the coat rather than it just saying "this is a coat." it looks like the neck/head dont connect at all and that there is no real depth to your drawing. try not smudging next time and thinking about directional pencil strokes to show planes -> how would i draw in the strokes of the background so that the figure pops out?
for your oct anatomy final: you are missing a ton of midtones that would make it smooth/every shadow value is the same. learn about how to compare values and blend and planes and shit because its way too graphic. same thing about smudging and emphasis as well, find out which parts to emphasize, and the edges help make depth as well (why would both hands be blurred out especially, hes leaning down on the hand and pressing weight, the other hand reaching out could be a focal point.) and dont take pics with eraser shavings.
anyway, you don't need to render everything you draw, just draw a lot, construct some shit/figures, when you do render make sure to really be careful. i like your dog drawing tho its cute.
>>2876943
i'm afraid i might have made it /too/ blended, since you clearly have a lineart thing goign on. i hope this kinda helps tho

Besides that "qt sad grl with alien seized eyes crying" hardly is the most original of drawing subjects:
The flower things are made in such a different style than the face that it honestly looks plain bad and sloppy. But I think it's easily fixable if you go over the flowers and fix/redo them in a more similar style as the face, since that's far more interesting.
