post here please

Post your current drawing here and provide helpful criticism and advice to others!

This is not a thread to discuss your autism, the rest of the board is for that.

Please make sure your posted image is clear, DOWNSIZED TO AROUND 1000 PIXELS WIDE, ROTATED TO THE CORRECT ORIENTATION, and that any unused space is cropped.
If you want critique on a drawing from the previous thread, you can delete it there and repost in this one and then kill yourself.

But you've been given critiques over and over again and you haven't even attempted to apply any of them. People have echoed my sentiments in previous threads and "babbling about subject matter" is completely relevant, as you've been told to leave your comfort zone of two lifeless, ill proportioned women, staring abjectly at the observer multiple times.

The poses are always the same and always incredibley stiff, you pillow shade with no defined source of light which makes every picture flat, the women always have the same expressionless face. Draw something else.

Seconding this >>2842854

Finally jumped into digital this Jan and just realised how long it takes me to render. This took 5-6 hrs, most of which was blending. Maybe watching speed paintings fucked up my expectations or I'm just getting adjusted to the tablet.

Also did you move from doing greyscale to colour works/studies or doing them at the same time? I know values>colour but would it be useful/counter-productive to do them at the same time?

Cheers.

About an hour and a half, maybe closer to two, I don't know what my record is but I remember taking a long time on still lives and shit when I first started. I also don't know what my level is but have some questions you want answers to and then get to work.
>>2842899
You can do them at the same time yeah, learn how you want to learn. In my opinion if you want to accelerate in either or it's best to keep them separate in the sense that you should do a single study intent on learning about value/form and then do another single study on color and it's can of worms. You'll save yourself the frustration of trying to juggle a hundred things AND learn at the same time.

Also I don't know exactly how you work but it's really important to make a rigid distinction between your block-in stage and your rendering stage. Break everything down into major and minor shapes and then flesh them out once you've placed them all in the right spot.
>>
>>2842151
Seconding blog request, this looks great to me
These type of paintings (or whatever it is, maybe not exactly a painting since it has lineart?) are pretty much what I want to get good at. But a few times I read you should get good at drawing first then try to paint, I've never even colored anything, but not even sure that is true
>>
>>2842965
Ruan Jia sucked at drawing but was great at painting. So you can go for it if you want.
>>
>>2842963
Do you draw before you block in or just get to blocking in?
>>
>>2842970
Usually just go straight into blocking in with shapes, yeah. Technically still drawing at least according to Richard Schmid but if I want to practice painting I wouldn't do any line work.

If you really want to hone your sense of proportion and all that it's probably best to draw everything out but I'm lazy and just like diving in.

>>2844275
im just gonna paint these apples while i've got them though. im working on another painting that is this composition but filling the canvas more. I really want to do a painting of cheese and bread. I like apples but my favorite food is cheese and bread.

>>2844274
I can't speak to that. Digital is the reverse of traditional painting. In digital since it is viewed on a screen that is lit the goal is to make the dark areas seem as dark as possible, and the light and color to not stand out too much.

That's why Ruan Jia's paintings work. for the most part they are dark and mid-tones, and the color and light are sparse and very vibrant.

I think personally if you did some studies of Rembrandt's work it would help with your digital paintings a lot because his paintings always have lighting similar to what digital painters today use. Sparse light, and mostly dark.
>>
>>2844293
>I can't speak to that.
but i did anyway lol. take my advice with a grain of salt since im not a digital painter, i just look at it every once in a while and make observations of what works and what doesn't.
>>

>pick a new color

what is using a palette and using a blendy brush?
>>
>>2844317
Right, I completely forget about using a palette. I've never worked traditionally with paints so I often feel like I have an infinite palette. Also blendy brush? What's that?
>>
>>2844334
>I've never worked traditionally with paints so I often feel like I have an infinite palette
You can still limit a palette in digital. Use swatches instead of the sliders and mix the colors yourself. For the most part color theory in traditional applies to color theory in digital.

Now render it.
>>
>>2844464
You're not conceptualizing forms in 3D space correctly, leading to 'clipping'. It's a problem not only in this piece, but in practically all of them.

-Left girl's forearm clips into right girl's waist/pelvis
-Left girl's breast clips into right girl's ribcage/abdominals
-Both girls are drawn with their thighs and knees closed, but somehow right girl fits in between left girl's thighs.

Perspective is off too. Bed implies a certain eye level and station point, but all parts of both girls are drawn as if everything is the eye level. On both girls the calves are drawn as if they're at eye level, but the pelvis is drawn that way too, and the ribcages, and the heads, etc.

Right girl is looking over left girl's shoulder.

You need to start constructing from the ground up, rectangular prisms for everything. Draw them all so that they make sense in perspective, and the horizon stays consistent. Draw through the rectangles so that they don't clip into each other. I suggest learning blender or some other 3D program, making a basic manikin with box forms, build bones so that it's poseable, then duplicate and pose them as needed. Using these as refs will solve perspective and clipping problems, and is probably worth your time considering how samey your content is, and the problems you have.

Stop drawing women as plastic manikins. Flesh squashes, muscles flex, gravity exists, etc. You have several points of contact where you can show form changes from pressure: the thigh, the butt, and especially that one breast mentioned earlier. It's probably worth your time to pause simple lit porn and do studies - it looks like you learned to draw by copying airbrushed solo pinups.

Judging by most of the images, I'm thinking maybe I'm out of my depth posting here. Nevermind.

Typing this, I'm starting to think 'Whats the point posting these?', I can see where I need to improve. My images are mainly studies, no stylisation or whatever so theres nothing really to talk about. This is a jar. It took a few hours, maybe 90 minutes. I liked trying to draw the lighting and found that white (or no colour/shading) was just as valuable as dark when shading. The jar top is pretty awful, miss-shaped and all. The 'brush' strokes in the shadow should be blended i guess but I kinda like the look (though the separate parts of the shadow should be stroked in the same direction).

And finally one that might be easier to comment because it shows a bit more personality. I love this guys face. He's just some guy who donned a jumpsuit and stuck a few abrasive pads on his joints. He's starting to regret his decision to fight crime. He originally had a pad on his forehead, too, but I decided it looked like he had a specific intention for it, like he'd thought it through. He hasn't. So I got rid of the head pad.

Maybe I should come back with some actual finished pieces.

Feel free to draw over and repost these images to show me how to correct posture, lighting, ect.

Not gonna lie, the subjects look like shit but the scene itself is set. You conveyed a little bit of depth in the window bars. The mimic has convincing detail on a relatively minimal form. You did what you wanted to do. The action is happening.

Now to the meat of the matter: For the love of god, anatomy and gesture drawing please. The adventurer looks like ass. The tongue looks like ass. The viewer can't see where the floor ends and the wall begins. Study the elements you want to emulate in the drawing and you'll bring everything else up to the quality of the mimic, and then everything altogether up to an even better quality.

But even then I notice major differences between the reference and my piece, all the subtleties I missed add up.

Looks cool, but look at those vertical lines on the opening of the big pot as well as on the cloth - never draw against the cross contour lines of the form. You'll break the illusion.

If by "rib muscles" you mean serratus, then it indeed does extend all the way back to scapula. The medial epicondyle surprisingly faces the medial direction.

Thanks.
With the mug, try to think of the mug as a character, think how resentful he is because he has to sit on a plain checkered cloth. He's kinda racist towards square patterns, because he had a rough childhood in the mug factory.
Make up a story like that and it will help you with feeling the form and giving it more life as well as make the process more fun.

You're doing this for yourself, your own improvement, your own life. You're making yourself happy.
Anyways, this redline isn't for your drawing specifically, but it illustrates my point - draw the feet as a bunch of simple forms held together by the power of gesture.

Draw larger and don't rely on outlines too much. Outlines might be the finished product of your effort, but if it's also in your thought process, your drawing will turn out flat.

>Keep getting told to work on my proportion in my figures
>Thought doing that Andrew Loomis square and popping an X would take care of that.

I'm not sure what people mean when they say "work on proportion"

I don't even know how to train it.

Can somebody help me out on this? Pic related. Apparently the proportions are off, but I don't what's wrong with it. I need a red-line to really ascertain what people are talking about.

He's supposed to be 8 heads tall, and 3 heads wide.
>>
>>2848944
Is proportion something I can take care of through careful measuring in perspective?

I always try and stay away from that because it takes away too much thought from my primary focus (the drawing itself), and it makes it even more rigid.

Is it just something that I need to take more into consideration?
>>
>>2848944
It means you don't know how to foreshorten good enough.
>>
>>2848946
>>2848944
Is it something I train through observational drawing? I've completely skipped that in favor of imaginative drawing.

Is proportion the retaining of dimensions in perspective? I'm not exactly sure how to go about doing that. I don't know how to make a cube completely even on all sides. I'm constantly having to feel that out and sort of mentally "eye-ball" it.
>>
>>2848949
Is there a concrete, objective way of foreshortening?

I'm really sort of lost on that, and I'm almost "guessing" in the sense that I'm running both limbs parallel at extremes, and then I'm choosing an in-between mentally.

Do I just draw more people with foreshortened limbs to get better at this?
>>
>>2848961
Perspective, perspective, perspective

Foreshortening is a direct result of perspective as applied to anatomy.

Find the horizon, find your Vanishing Point, start on one end and extend out.

It gets more complicated when the basic shape isn't level with the horizon, but it's fairly similar in application.

No start over, it's something I learned as a concept artist is to just don't be afraid to just scrap it and start fresh, you'll waste time beating a dead horse so I suggest move on and observe other artists and do some studies that you aim you in the direction of the artist you wanna b familio

You'll learn that with time but for now you gotta take time away from the drawing and or flip it alot and come back, if it looks bad and you've spent too much time on it then you've been beating it down. Also perspective from other artists are a good indicator throughout the process to be let known that you're beating it down

Literally just look at refs where they do this pose and draw the outline.
Instant foreshortening.

I'm finding that difficult too, guess I'll just have to keep working at it until it looks right

>>2849439
Anyways, the issue with this one is that the forearm looks flat because you showed too much of the bicep. The bicep gets covered up by the forearm since the forearm when bent is in front.
>>
>>2849442
Good advice, thank you
>>
>>2844553
>>2844664
I disagree with other guy; I think the fire being in a totally flat perspective looks really cool given the medieval subject; a nod to early medieval art. Like something out of the book of Kells or the Liber Scivias. I would even play the stylization of that up, if you take it that way when rendering.
>>
Does anyone know of any good resources on shape theory or maybe just eye construction/facial gesture in general? I'm trying to make eyes for a cute things, and I'm just having the most frustrating time in capturing the energy of the character in their eyes. I can use a ref or look at how some artist I like do it and get it down, but I want to give myself a good general idea on eye construction. The farther I attempt to stylize the less and less I'm able to achieve what I want. If I had a good point for what I'm shooting for it would probably be Disney level gesture with faces.

I don't have anything to currently post, but I'll say I know my stuff in general, I just want to get better at tackling general expressions and facial gesture and I feel weaker than I should when I approach it from imagination/memory.
>>
>>2849439
Anon >>2849442 told you how to fix this particular drawing, but the real mistake is much more general.
You're at the stage where studying anatomy can be even harmful for your learning process. Symbol drawing all the muscles can give you the impression that your anatomy is correct, while all it does is distract you from the fundamentals of perspective, form and gesture.
Learn those before you start applying them to something specific.

Your technique is splendid, but your composition is weak -
The way you blurred the flowers and the light areas suggests that the main focal point is elsewhere.
My eyes spent quite a while running about the painting looking for something to focus on, until eventually becoming tired and leaving the painting.
Definitely not the effect you want to instill into your viewers.

>>2849296
>>2849318

Ambient occlusion is the cornerstone of reality, its what pushes objects back and forwards. You need to learn how light interacts with an object in space (form). It has many structures AO is just one of them. You got direct light (light family), core shadows, shadow family, bounce light, ambient occlusion, atmospheric lighting etc...

You HAVE to learn them all if you want a result like

No one gives a shit anyway. Ultimately you are walking this path alone. If you can't even be honest with yourself you're not cut out for this...
>>
>>2848467
So since you can't figure out yourself what is wrong with his anatomy it's considered flawless? It is far from flawless. You just pointed out that the both of you need to go study anatomy now. This is not how anatomy or shading works. People point out these flaws because they obviously see them not to make themselfes feel better in a narcissistic way. You are not helping. You are just sugarcoating this poor fellow.

Thanks! I'll be sure to pay attention to the angles as a whole in the next piece I do like this.

Here's another one for some input. Does this cat looks like it fits into the perspective of this scene? I'm not too concerned about it being perfect, but passable.

Also, if anyone has experience drawing lots of cats, let me know if the general anatomy is right. I had to draw this custom angle from a few other different cat perspectives, so I'm not totally sure that it's right.

Thanks a bunch!

It's interesting but the black face looks like you're trying to avoid painting the face altogether, and there is no way to work past that, then making something that has a semblance of a face. A black pit is not a substitute for one. Look up some abstract portraiture artists and be inspired. Jenny Saville, Lucian Freud, Marlene Dumas.

You can do better, Brian.

Is learning light and shadow just as important as learning how to draw?

Is it the only true way to achieve the feeling of reality/form in a drawing?

I've noticed that in my art I always tank all of the depth I've created through construction when I render incorrectly.

I know the proportions on this are fucked (only ran a gesture, no perspective), but it's a good example of me making everything worse by bothering to shade while being ignorant as to how to really pull it off.

Is there a point at which "a lot of detail" becomes "too much detail"? Is it even worth to spend a whole hour on a reflection at the end you will probably barely even see?

>>
>>2852086
No. It is worth the time. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, quality over quantity.
>>
>>2852086
Save detail for attention to grab the viewer's eye. Your piece sucks because there is detail everywhere and it irritates the eyes. Where am I supposed to look? How is my eye guided from one area to another?
Real life is detailed, but we don't notice details until we focus or care about what we're looking at
