If you suck at rendering, you should practice rendering. Study other artists and see how they use color. There are ton of tutorials out there on gumroad, deviantart, pintrest, whatever. It's not hard, just do it.

I love this book and it's video. Just because he teaches rendering through vehicles doesn't mean the fundamentals can't be applied to other things. Light is light and form is form. To think otherwise would be stupid and counterproductive.

I've seen many people turn this book away just because Robertson likes drawing cars and by doing so they didn't learn how rendering works.

You will need to know how perspective works properly because you use that book, it will constantly refer back to his how to draw book on how to set up various perpectives before rending.
