the book:
is a moleskine portfolio blank A4
find it on bookdepository
>^you wont really find it cheaper.
the pencil:
a paper mate mechanical pencil 0.5
>^you dont really need a fancy rotring pacer or whatever, just good quality led to shove into one of these bad boiz.

I love this!
sigh please talk about this I want opinions
>>2840573
These are super quick and messy sketches. I've never understood how to critique things like this, aside from saying work on line quality and general anatomy.
I'm not saying you have to spend 100 hours on something to produce something critiquable, but how the hell am I supposed to say something meaningful when you've shown so little?
>>2840582
Sorry I guess just stylistically, I'm not trying to do a career or anything I just go through phases of obsessive doodling. So I'm kinda taking it at my own pace.
The chicken scratch lines are something I'm working on, I guess I'm just wondering what people think of them stylistically or whether they indicate skill or not.
>>2840867
>I guess I'm just wondering what people think of them stylistically or whether they indicate skill or not.
That's the whole problem with this though! All the areas I'd look at to determine skill aren't present here. There's no shading, color, line control, composition, expression, significant style choices, anything. It's literally a couple of expressionless, floating head doodles that look like they took a few minutes tops.
There's nothing wrong with drawing this way, but honestly, what the hell do you expect me to evaluate here? This is not something you should be looking for critique on, because really it's not even a "thing" to begin with.
>>2836890
Been reading Perspective Made Easy, how's the perspective on this?
>>2839859
What would you consider good lead?
Am I doing anything right?? I'm trying to get the whole head perspective thing but it keeps coming out weird.

rotrings mechanical pencils are overpriced imo, but their leads are some of the best and are worth loosing sum sheckles over.

>>2841095
>>2836900
top left and bottom right are dope
>>2841047
The way you shaded the clothes. Makes it look flat and undetailed compared to the rest.
It's lovely, though.
>>2841124
i guess i did get lazy there, thanks.
>>2841047
Since you would like critique, you have major issues with hands and feet. In that drawing, the right hand is completely dead, and while the left is better, it's not quite right, especially the thumb. There are also issues with foreshortening, particularly noticeable on his left arm. Your portraiture is relatively good so it feels very weird to have a nicely hatched portrait on an odd body. I find myself cropping certain parts of this drawing and the quality vastly shifts
Also your designs don't feel like they're quite on a body, they serve more as shapes, which is not inherently wrong, I just don't find that it works with the style that you're going for.
I also suggest that you practice gesture drawing. It will help with keeping your figures from being still and to help you get a good hold on foreshortening.
>>2841167
yea, i have to agree with everything you said thhere, i suck at hands.
and after getting the portrait down i normally get lazyier as the drawing progresses. thanks anon, this has been a needed slap in my face.

Lol
Posted in beginner thread but fits here as well. Attempted a first person sketch of my room.
Could've done better with shading. Then again I sort of got lazy.

>>2842070
>2160x2160
my heart bleeds for drawings that noone will ever open to see.
>>2839306
If price is an issue, just get a clipboard and printing paper. Maybe go in on a big 3 ring binder to avoid too many loose papers.
The paper quality of a dirt cheap sketchbook isn't going to really make a difference to printing paper anyway.
>>2840890
So I really like this but how is this not considered "chicken scratch"? Isn't the fewer amount of lines the better? I'm a dumb noob
>>2842081
Chicken scratching is when instead of drawing a line you draw many, many small lines that make up the line, if you get what I'm saying. Drawing correcting lines isn't chicken scratching.
>>2842070
You should put some more tools over the drawing bro, and have even more framing it. If your whole pencil box isn't in the shot it's not artsy enough
>>2842076
Why thankyou anon
>>2842081
It's not chicken scratch, but the lines are absolutely awful. In general, for linework, the fewer the better. But on top of there being way too many lines, the lines are messy and all over the place in both placement and value

Maybe use a cup to help you draw circles.
Maybe a ruler too.

Hi guys, can anybody recommend me an A4 sketchbook that is nice? I'm not going to use it as just a sketchbook, more for finished drawings/sketches book for a personal project that is going to last me years. Moleskine doesn't ship to where I live unless I want to wait for 2 months or pay 20euros more than usual.

>>2848229
buy a moleskine from bookdepository
>>2848234
Not the OP but I too draw while smoking weed very often, don't understand why people look at it as a bad thing, really? As long as you can draw without it then it is fine do what you want..
>>2840430
brian?
>>2848229

It's fine, but the finished product just resonates too much of weed culture it is off putting to those who don't smoke.
>>2848279
Oh that was something I haven't really thought about so much.. But with my style I try to mix realism with creativity and trippy shit so it's like:

>>2843644
The antelope on the left looks hilarious.
Unless that's what you were going for, I suggest you draw motion through his entire body. Even if the animal is bored as hell and doesn't feel dynamic, you should still at least rotate the front legs a bit more to relieve the stretch on his neck.
>>2849578
Watch out for those symmetrical forms, they are very frequent in your drawing.
Muscles work in pairs, if both sides of the form are symmetrical, it means they are both flexed. That stiffens up your gesture and makes it look more artificial.
>>2849581
Well, yes and no. There are different approaches to gesture, but it's never the same thing as a "sketch". When drawing a sketch, you're looking for the position of physical forms. When drawing a gesture, you're looking for the motion, the relationship between those forms.
Sketching without a gesture results in a stiff pose.

Good effort. Try and fix both shoulders positiones, they look a bit misplaced too forward into the chest. Also the tree root next to her looks like a deformed leg. I like the composition though. Keep going.

A lot of Robert Crumb's best artwork was done in a lined B5 notebook. Manga artists also do their prep work in a B5 notebook.
This is the absolute last time I freehand anything in pen
Here's an early expression sheet of Crumb's from the fifties. This is a good habit to get into.

Year One is far better than Batman Begins. Amazing to think about. Haven't read Miller, Peter Milligan or Grant Morrison in awhile, but I'd like to.
>>2852479
Miller's simple but elegent scenes are something I always strive to achieve, and as always morrison is top notch writing anything batman.
>>2852480
Morrison's kind of brilliant with any established property, although his own titles are pretty wacky. This is only a guess but I think you'd be ready to buy B4-sized Deleter paper, which is considered "pro". It demands more concision than regular paper, since the suggested margin is B5, but you'll probably adapt easily to that.

First I read absolutely every post on ic. Then I start very light and draw around the page, flowy ghosty lines. I put active effort into not rushing. I want to be excited to see some shit happen on this drawing when I'm an hour to two hours in and not be tired cause I blew all my energy at the beginning.
Then I tighten up, create form, make it look good. If it doesn't look good, I erase.
