So /ic/
Color Theory

I just don't understand.
Like.. I UNDERSTAND it. I just don't understand why I can't get that on paper. I've dedicated 2017 to really working on improving myself, and one of my faults (of which I have many) is that I can't seem to grasp color theory to create an appealing palette.

Could you take a look at these and help me figure out what I'm not doing right?

Everything really.

But I guess in this case, lets start with the basics of color selection.

That along with digital painting. I've been starting to watch paints and speed draws to get a sense of what other digital artists do.

your main issue is that you are polishing turds. stop thinking about color theory and start thinking about perspective, construction and gesture.

Like >>2822581 said, there is a lot of room for improvement.
If you want to do simple doodles like these, a begginer book like drawing with the right side of the brain and keys to drawing + a figure drawing book like loomis or hoggart Dynamic figure drawing, should do the trick.

Trust me m8.
You are going to do oly the exercises in those books, because anyone that has gone trough a drawing book know how fucking hard can it be.

In books that don't have the exercises pointed out, I recommend just doing what that page (or lesson) is explaining at that moment.
>>
>>2822595
Line and edge is line art and deals with proportions, perspective, and etc. Value is shading, different objects have different reflective properties.

>>2822610
So now, I use Paint Tool SAI.
Have any useful guides or tips for different brush strokes or textures I should use to accomplish these different properties?

As for line and edge, I've seen so many different variations done that are appealing, how can there any one "right" way of doing it?
>>
>>2822613
Yes there is a better way to draw lines and bad way to draw lines. The bad way is to have the line weight be the same everywhere in the drawing. The good way is to have your edge and lines be lost somewhere and found elsewhere depending on the object being drawn. For example, when drawing fur, you don't want to connect every line. Instead us a bunch of tick marks to convey the edge/line of fur.

I do traditional stuff, so I can't give advice on digital brush techniques.

Capture.jpg
91KB, 713x1071px
>>2822632
But what about stuff like this?
I do get what you're saying, with varying line weight, but maybe this has its own stylistic significance?

As for "lines being lost somewhere and found elsewhere," I belive you're describing a "implied line."
And while that is one aspect, I don't think focusing on that alone will help me improve my lienart on a whole. (In fact, the first and only thing that comes to mind is areas of a drawing where the light hits the surface of an object, and you omit the line to designate a light value)
>>
So you made a topic on /co/ and posted all your work and didn't get the responses you wanted so you do it here?

Did you ever stop and think maybe your art isn't worth its own topic?
>>

>>
>>2822847
Hey there fellow /co/ anon.

I wasn't looking for art advice on /co/. I was looking for a show that /co/ was able to find. for me. And I had free content with which to bump the thread with.

Why do you think the world is such a horrible place?
>>
>>2822889
Why do you think your art warrants bumping off two threads on two different boards rather than just posting in the beginner thread to begin with and asking for advice?

Why do you think you're somehow above etiquette?
>>
>>2822890
Wehlp, you caught me anon, I guess I'm just some kind of terrible person.

Lock me up in Internet jail. You got me.
>>
>>2822891
>If I act sarcastic, somehow that absolves me of everything! Aren't I so cute? ^_^ rofl internet police!

Nice shilling, nice shit attitude, and your art will never improve since all you're looking to do is get attention with it and asking about color theory when you barely know the basics about construction. You don't have the eye for self improvement and you never will, especially with your shit attitude.
>>
>>2822893
Hey my man, I came here to /ic/ to self improve, I wouldnt have posted here without any other intention, and I've already gotten some helpful tips from some awesome anons. I've already started reading a couple of the books suggested here, and I love that Adobe COlor Wheel one posted.

Had you considered the fact that the person with the shit attitude here is the one coming into the thread to call out some rando to tell them their art is shit and offer no constructive criticism, when that is all that is being asked for?
>>
>>2822893
Also, according to Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, everybody can have the the "eye for self-improvement." It's not something that one can "have or not have." They go over that in the Introduction.

It's a great book, you should pick it up yourself.
>>
>>2822895
No, the person with the shit attitude is someone who tries to justify not scouring /ic/ for more than one minute enough to find this thread:
>>2821460
>Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.

And this is on top of spamming their art on /co/ which isn't even the correct board for it and again trying to justify it with, "I just wanted to share something cool (my own art)".

>>2822898
Everybody can also sing, it doesn't make everyone a singer.

>It's a great book, you should pick it up yourself.
>Being this condescending
Yeah, I'm the one with the shit 'tude.
>>
>>2822900
Again. On /co/ I was sharing free content to bump a request thread.

As for your comment on being condescending, again, YOU are the one coming in here, like you are the guardian of the rules of 4chan. You are the one trying to condescend someone else here. You should look up the word, "projecting."
>>
>>2822900
Now, it has been fun spending my morning going back and forth with you on this useless banter, but I believe you've dragged this thread far off its original purpose.

I've got the links and the advice I needed. So I'm gonna bounce.

I hope you can enjoy yourself with whatever other person who has the misfortune to interact with your nasty asshole of an attitude.
>>
>>2822909
>>2822910
>still justifying this hard

Yeah, never gonna make it.

Keep thinking your art is good enough to make threads about it, go on and on about how you clearly understand color theory you just don't understand it, and how you're so new you don't know the concept of line width and doubt its impact on changing a picture while suggesting to others basic art books you've clearly never read.
>>
>>2822910
>I hope you can enjoy yourself with whatever other person who has the misfortune to interact with your nasty asshole of an attitude.
You've responded to every single one of my posts, idiot.

You're insulting yourself.

Holy shit you're dense.

Never gonna fucking make it.
>>
>>2822638
you first master techniques and fundamentals, then you try developing a style (what you are showing here is a highly stylized illustration). it simply doesn't work the other way around.
>>
if you want your colours to look nice you need to think more about what colours you want to use.

As a simple start I suggest limiting yourself to a stricter pallete by either making your own or following off someone elses (you can find some nice palettes off tumblrs dedicated to that stuff) I'd suggest making a collection of what colours work well together to establish a sense of what goes well together. keep in mind that value can also play a part in making colours fit in with one another and a lack in variation on value will make your colours look flat

Its very easy to go crazy with colours and end up with something that looks cluttered instead try to use colour to bring focus on your drawing.

please also study colour theory--or atleast the colour wheel-- to understand what youre doing. it might be more complicated than what i just said but when you understand the rules you can really begin to shine
>>
>>2823388
OP here, thank you anon. That's very helpful advice.
I'll try starting with strictly one or two colors and vary only the value. I appreciate it!

>>2823388
Alright anon, how does this look?
I've also applied a few things I read from Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain.
>>
>>2823801
Better in a way but now youre just working in monochrome. Try adding another colour to make it more interesting. It doesnt have to be a palette of all orange you can try orange and blue, orange and red etc try planning what colours you want to use before you really colour stuff in either in a thumbnail or by making rough blobs on a seprate layer to see how they work.

Dont be scared of tweaking things and trying again and again until you have something that works. Both art and learning are processes that will take time

word of advice: an easy trick to making the whole drawing pop is to see it in greyscale to really see the values
>>
>>2823801
>Continues posting in this thread rather than moving work to beginner thread
>>
>>2823801
There's almost no contrast in the values.
>>
File: Capture.jpg (39KB, 374x564px) Image search: [Google]
Capture.jpg
39KB, 374x564px
>>2823847
I figured monochrome would be a good basic thing to start with. But it does seem uninteresting still.

For the colors, you mean just comparing how they look next to one another? Which makes which look warm and such?

Also, >>2823854 is right, there doesn't seem to be much contrast. If you look at the image here, this is the scaler I'm using. If I detract value though, won't it look muddy? I've been told black is a terrible color to shade with
>>
>>2823847
I changed the hue to be more blue on the hair and the background. It definitely helps it pop, but still needs something.

As for the grayscale stuff, I've seen that around before, and I've seen people get amazing results using those exercises.
What exactly are you supposed to do with that? just illustrate it entirely in grayscale?

will you stop FUCKING POLISHING TURDS ALREADY!?
stop coloring the shit you call lineart.
learn proper fundamentals before you learn how to color.
FFS get your shit together dude.
>>
OP, I'm wondering if you're conflating color theory with just rendering. I did that too when I was starting out.

>>2823881
The reason people get good results when they do greyscale first is because they have a solid foundation of values, and the colors are then easy to make sense of.

Make sure the values/hues you pick make physical (as in physics) sense. You can learn this by careful study, or dick around with 3D rendering for a while like I did.

For colors alone, honestly, just find some art you like and color-pick the palette. I did that, and eventually formed a sense for why it was done the way it was. Don't feel ashamed of it, its all a means to an end.

So I was dicking around with some friends, and I've gotten an attraction to that blue-green color palette.

I'll try my next few drawings in greyscale and see what I can infer from it.

>>

Bro, I asked a question.
I got an answer.

The only I'm still here is because I'm discussing it with you.
I see /ic/ as a resource, a community of other artists to discuss things and ask questions.

Honestly though, I should just stop posting, I forgot how slow /ic/ is, and there's no need to give it any space for people to shit post in.

That being said, MODS, feel free to let this thread die off, or delete it, or do whatever you do. I got the answer to the question I asked, there's no need for this thread to still be up.
>>
>>2829158
Also, asking questions (not whining) is not a terrible idea, in fact, it's one of the fastest ways to learn things.

You should give learning a try.
