Hi d/ic/ks, i've been drawing for a while now. I have a part time job after working full time for a while. long story short I want to know what I need to do to start taking commissions.
So for all you anons taking commissions, how'd you start? What did you do to get it going? Thanks!

Post what you think is your best piece for starters.
Anyways the first thing you need is a following on social media. Twitter, deviant art, tumblr, etc (furry sites if you do that shit). Once you have people who look at your art and come back for more, you make a post about commissions with prices and examples. You spam the shit out of that post as much as you can without losing followers and hopefully you sell some. Ask them (nicely) for referrals.
Up your price when you think there is demand. Start small and stay humble.

Oh, and do art trades with people who you follow. If someone with thousands of followers retweets your commission post because you did an art trade with them, it's great.

commission work is a lie. You have very good artist even on /ic/ who can't get commissions. It's a stupid concpt and don't even try it.

That's because it's more about your social media presence and ability to market yourself than it is your artistic skill. Are you really surprised that a bunch of autists and neckbeards can't put themselves out there despite spending hours every day practicing their craft? I'm not.

This lol. I've seen shit tumblr artists that mostly draw fan art get a lot of commissions and exposure compared to somebody good but doesn't draw fan art.

If you really want to get money fast, the best way is to pander to fandoms.
By that you either need a similiar styles to popular franchises or make very good stuff of popular Characters (like naruto and steven universe) then slap a reasonable pricetag on it (around 15$ per Hour or minimum 10$ for a quick work)
If you want to get big money, go for furry porn.
Learn to draw humans and animals and start doing alot of furry stuff. You'll get a following, maybe even a dedicated board for you. Atleast in my case I got invited to some private Furry RP Forum and people on there request pretty regularly their "important" scenes or their weird furry OCs. (But you can easily google my shit)
That way I get atleast 400$ while working part time as an IT Technician. Takes a long time tho

Take this with a grain of salt as I do NSFW commissions. Dunno if that's what you want to do too or not.
If you have a good gallery people will notice you. That's the way I started. I make like 1-3 illustrations (either sketches or completed colored illustrations) per week and the influx of new followers (tumblr and hentai foundry) is pretty stable at 1k per month.

I do commissions on a daily basis and I'm not even that fantastic of an artist. I don't pander to fandoms and I don't draw furry. Most of my work are invented OCs or OCs from MMOS.
I do smut tho, maybe you are talking about sfw commissions or something.
its more about communication than it is talent. you need to talk.get out of your shell.email people, call them, initiate yourself to do this. keep doing it,leave a business card with your website and number. have links on your website leading to your social media. its all marketing, skill has little importance.

pretty much a pile of bullshit.
if you have good art you'll get more noticed. the only way you can fuck up with good art is if you are a complete moron incapable of writing simple emails.

getting noticed doesn't do anything. I'm a professional artist and I get no work. my stuff it triple A level art. people who are crap and generic usually get the jobs because they flood the market.

Post your work.

I am a professional too. I draw smut art for a living. Comics full time and commissions on the side. I have 0 problems getting work.
I'd love to see your triple A level art.
