Is it common for you to finish a digital full color commission with BG in 12 work hours or I'm just slow?
>>
Reminder that speed does not matter and that quality is always most important.
>>
>>2813251
You'll get faster with practice. It's worth keeping track of your time spent, but I agree with this guy: >>2813253 focus on doing a good job first.
>>
>>2813251
I usually give two days for a piece, it could take anywhere from 4 to 18 hours depending.
if the client wants a tone of revisions then i give a week.

>tfw i do the same
>tfw i only charge $30 per commission
>>
>>2813556
can you fucking not
>>
>>2813251
It only matters if your commissions are cheap. How much did you charge?
>>
>>2813251
My complex commissions take me around 15 hours if they include a detailed background.
I charge 200+ for that tier, so that's good money for where I live.
>>
>>2813253
well, it matters to you
>>
>>2813682
Would you be comfortable posting a commission you have charged $200+ for or a piece you did of that calibre?
>>
>>2813559
but competition is a bitch...
There's this guy in /v/ drawthreads that charges $25 per work spends weeks on every single one and the result is just omg ...
And before you say he's from some 3rd world, he's from Sweden.
>>
>>2813718
But Sweden is a 3rd world country.
>>
>>2813699
I'd prefer not to.
Anyway, what I wanted to say is that you should price your art according to how much time you spend on it and the demand you are getting. If this is your main gig, you have to make it worthwhile to you.
Also, with time you'll gain confidence and a better workflow. Just put some discipline and hard work into it, and you'll be good.
It's really just a repeating circle. You do good work, you get better/faster at it, people want more work from you, you do good work, you get better/faster at it, etc.
>>
>>2813718

Then he probably has brain damage of some kind.
>>
>>2813251
the fuck is so hard about a background? I always see backgrounds in commissions being 10 or more EXTRA and most of the time it is really shitty gradient.
>>
>>2813771
It's really hard to be Swedish and not be mentally unstable.
>>
>>2813253
Not if someone goes beyond 72 hours and starts polishing turds.
>>
>>2813758

Can you support yourself with what you take in with commissions?
>>
>>2813774

Because people pay for porn/hentai figures, not a goddamn landscape of high quality art, they just want the figures to be the focus usually, not the background
>>
>>2814309
so then why is it so much?
>>
>>2813251

Better be charging a good amount buddy
>>
>>2814005
this

I think its better just to cut your lost and work on making something better, but in a reasonable amount of time.
>>
>>2814307
I could since the demand is big, but my main gig aren't commissions. I draw porn comics full time.
I do commissions on the side because I want to get better at coloring. That's why I don't mind putting a lot of time into them.
>>
>>2814309
Most of the people that commission me want me to draw detailed backgrounds.
Because they take me a lot of time I price them at 80-100 and the demand is still big.
>>
How do you guys get a start doing commissions? Do you need to develop a big fanbase?
>>
>>2815513
Have good art. Promote your art on social media (twitter, tumblr, instagram, facebook,... ) on more specialized sites (deviantart, artstation for sfw art, pixiv, furraffinity, hentaifoundry if you do smut).
Produce a lot of content (at least 3 pics per week, more is better) and when you do, make it clear that you do commissions.
Make a nice commissions guideline page to link to interested clients.

And you are good to go.

Tho, because you ask things like these, I am sure you are a beginner and your art is probably beginner tier as well, so don't have too big expectations.
>>
12 hours is solid and pretty much standard when talking about a fully rendered character and background.
>>
>>2815928
Thank you for the advice. I've only started uploading for 2 months.

I'm slow as all hell and I feel overwhelmed by commissions but I need them

find a job that is more suitable for you.
you are throwing away your life.

>I do think time constraints shouldn't be seen as an excuse for flaws, but rather as something people should strive to improve on. Learning how to draw, in my experience, is learning how to draw faster; anyone who can measure, given an infinite amount of time, should be able to draw anything, those who are good, though, can get everything right with just a couple strokes, barely even stopping to consciously measure whatever it is they're drawing; furthermore, they waste less time with erasing, layers, and any of the other auxiliary tools that aren't the brush itself.

>That's what I think means to GitGud, is to draw something well, fast and without needing anything else other than the ability to add color to the canvas. Of course, I'm not saying this is realistic, everyone makes mistakes, but I think this should be what we strive for, and I feel it's the reason why many beginner oriented books urge you to never erase during exercises.

Speed is what matters.
>>
>>2818914
but I earn more this way than a regular job
>>
>>2818932
Agreed. If you are a commercial illustrator this is a must.

Once you reach a (semi)professional level of quality, a level of quality that can bring you an income, then getting better means getting faster. While focusing on that you can of course improve your skills even more along the way.
This is what most professional artists, and those who strive to become one, must go through at some point.

grats India

I charge $15. I take so long because I'm scared people with not like it and I spend too much time making sure it's at least decent. I'm really fucking scared of not meeting people's expectations
>>
>>2819459

Seems super slow, especially if your art looks as simple as that picture.

Fucking polacks, you are killing this industry with cheap trash and hard working artists suffer from that
