I like the style of ping pong the animation, and similar movies, like mind game.
Are there any tutorials or basic steps I can take to start replicating this style?

An anon was scanning masaaki yuasa's sketchbook. Prepare for some disappointment. Or awesomeness if you're into that. Check the artbook thread, but it might be a while.

Find concept art and selected works by the main artist and study them. Try to get into their head, and break down the process.
Replicate, understand, repeat.

Thanks for the heads up. I think I might like his rougher sketches even more than the higher production value stuff

If you're right handed, try drawing with your left. If left handed than with your right.
After some practise you'll get to this level of controlling your lines with opposite hand.
Study taiyo matsumoto's and masaaki yuasa's drawings. yuasaĆ” artbook was just recently restocked on amazon.jp so buying that would be a good start

did yuasa do this?

That art is based on Taiyo Matsumoto's art style (he wrote the Ping Pong and Tekkon kinkreet manga) study his stuff a bit.
Get the Tekkonkinkreet omnibus to see where Taiyo Matsumoto's style originated. Ping Pong isn't available in English but his graphic novel Gogo Monster is, and is from the same time period so it's closer to that more rendered style.
Kemonozume is a good Yuasa watch btw
