I've been reading Orhan Pamuk's My Name Is Red and I got into the art of the Islamic miniature.
From what I read Ottoman painters would mix crushed pigments with egg white, which I can't do. What do you think would be a good substitute?
China? Watercolor?
Here's an earlier, simpler example
subtitute how? For the whole medium or just for the egg?

A good substitute would be to buy paint instead of trying to mix it yourself. Egg tempera is still being made, although I don't know why you would want it.

I don't do egg tempera myself but I have always found the methods of icon painters extremely appealling. I might have a go at it someday.
