You could tell they have no clue how the neck is attacked to the torso and just winged it by attempting to cover up important landmarks but despite that it is painfully evident they used whatever means possible to cover up their lack of fundamentals.

Not to mention face is slightly skewed, no improvement.

have you gotten any injuries? i want to do that too, but I already tried once (although with only 5-10 minute breaks every 2 hours) and immediately got faint signs of tendonitis on my elbow
>>
>>2794755
Ehmm when I started out I had a very shitty 8 year old bamboo with terrible pressure sensitivity, having to press hard and work on a very tiny surface gave me carpal tunnel syndrome ( I also didn't take enough breaks ).

I bought an intuos pro L later because of the big surface. I get pains occasionally still but it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be.
Try using your whole arm to draw when you can, it helps a lot! Also check with a doctor if you have the possibility, I went to one at the local gym, they can give you more direct exercises that help with the problem! Maybe it has something to do with your grip, or the way you move your arm when you draw.

>>
>>2794717
Great improvement for two years.

At this stage, I think you would benefit from experimenting more with color. Your colors are all presented very matter-of-factly. You could definitely be more playful. Look for color palettes and lighting setups, either from art or from film, and try to learn from those, especially highly stylized ones (it's simply a matter of toning them down for realism sometimes). You can also look up a few gimmicks, like blending complementaries in your shadows or your underpaint.

Center 2016 pic is fine, but bunny girl portrait is an example of why your colors bug me. The figure itself is fine, but plants in the background are a super saturated green, flowers are saturated red, it doesn't blend well (especially with nothing else in the image having those similar hues or chroma) and looks too close to painting with numbers. Same problem with the bathroom picture, everything looks like it has too much its "own" color and nothing else.

nerd. is this one better?
>>
>>2794509
It's mainly better by style because I was essentially working from nothing and making something, so I had to pay more attention to aesthetics. It's actually a totally flat picture devoid of any sort of form. This is the main reason I never received the help I needed because I was so good at concealing my own weaknesses.

>>2794514
I didn't know my hips were feminine.
I never really paid much attention to that before. Thanks for the heads up.

>>
>>2795008
You're probably right.

I need to go back and look at the skeleton/spine again from a 3-D model. I've realized all kinds of stuff from just drawing and rotating various parts of the body that I'd never receive from photographs/books.

>>
>>2795015
just try drawing a naked human body quickly from many different angles, if you get better at visualizing the full shape the proportions will come a lot more second nature. going in to all that detail you have with the lighting and musculature is backwards.
>>
>>2795020
Thanks for telling me this.
I had no idea how to train my eye to watch for proportions. I mainly do stuff like that as a fleeting exercise in form.
>>
>>2794955
Yeah you're right! I have mostly been playing it very safe with colors since I've mostly practiced values. I will practice them a lot more the way you told me.

I never knew I had the mistake in the bunnygirl painting. I had people give me critique on it that didn't make any sense, but now I know. From now on this is something I will think a lot more about. The bathroom painting however, I just followed the colors in the ref(except for the window because there was an overexposure there).

Thanks a lot anon. This was something I really needed!

Long ass image dump am sorry.
All of this is within a years span from today
I made another post in an improvement thread but really fucked up the dates. Starts off with me being 17, now I'm 18.

These are all in order. My drawings are just absolute trash when I feel like shit. It's not a case where when I reference, my work is a lot better, because some of the worse shit in there is referenced. I tried not to include any studies.

I'm realizing now that if I want to improve I need to take better care of myself. Drawing used to be an escape to create characters and stories. But now I just use it to evaluate how much of a piece of shit I am.

Got a really long fucking ways to go orz

What's your process? You're in a good spot and I might be mistaken but I get the feeling that you just let the drawings happen, most of these are mugshots or sort of sketches that you decided to work on further. If that's the case you might want to spend more time in the planning phase, it's going to make the final painting look a lot better
>>
>>2790738
woaa, I really like it!

Still... I think there's much room to improve left.
What I've noticed is:

1) the eyes: I think it would look better if they were a little smaller
2) the nose: is a bit too small and undefined in my opinion.

But yeah... These points are just my opinion.

3) the expression: she has no expression somehow. And this looks kinda derpy, to be honestly. Blank stare.

4) the torso:
her boobs face to the front but the rest of the body doesn't. Sure, gives a nice view boob-wise but looks creepy when you look at the full body. I think you should practice torso anatomy in general.

Nice work though, keep it up. :)

I just draw whenever I can, be it in a sketchbook or digital. So it's almost everyday, though there's been breaks between. If you feel as if your not doing enough you're on the right track, I've found that even the best artist I've met personally feel that same way so I guess so long as you have the thirst for it you'll git gud.

Why is it that all the 7 year old prodigies only draw hyper rendered frontal portraits?

I never visited this board but I'm watching Bob Ross and got interested. You guys are fucking weird. Everyone seems down more down than people on other boards, also you spend twelve hours a day fucking painting and get injuries? What the fuck, relax guys. I don't think you understand what a tumblr nose is

Tumblr noses are unnecessarily red noses. This is done by artists to avoid having the render all the subtle value changes that make the nose look like it's actually protuding from the face.

It also refers to the triangular bright red noses in more cartoony drawings, but it's fundamentally about red noses on people who are not drunk
>>
>>2797463

Is that loish?
>>
>>2797463
Nah, red noses were originally just a caricature of how translucent skin was. Tumblr noses are racially ambiguous noses mean to not offend anybody because people do not want to impose their values of the ideal nose on marginalized races, typical SJW crap, they can either be red or not.
>>
>>2797470
it's both, to be honest.

>>
>>2797471
are you fucking retarded? he just said they can be red or not.
>>
>>2797470

How is this >>2797212 racially ambigious?
>>
>>2797470
The definition has changed now?

Tumblr nose has always been red (or otherwise darkly toned) noses that don't fit the context of the character, used as a crutch to add personality and depth to the drawing.
>>
>>2797477
Looks kinda Asian to me
>>
>>2797250
You got it exactly right, I've never really planned anything out before, it's always just a sketch I happen to like and I keep pushing it until I don't like it anymore. I want to be more ambitious and start painting fuller scenes. Will spend more time planning, so thanks anon.
>>
>>2797470
Or maybe people just like how they look? Why are we even giving a crap about how tumblr draws. As long as I don't have to see it, I'm good.
>>
>>2797488
glad to help! even if you really like a sketch it's always a good idea to repeat the same idea so you can push it further and further without committing to a full painting. it also makes the rendering phase a lot less painful because you don't have mistakes constantly emerging while you work
>>
>>2797473

>they can be red or they can not be red, either way it's a tumblr nose.
His wording implies that the color does not matter

Tumblr noses can have two definitions

1) Red noses for no purpose
2) racially ambiguous gigantic noses for no purpose

and the two definitions are not - obviously - mutually exclusive.

>it can or cannot be a certain way

is not a definition. It's literally the opposite. Definitions are either inclusive "they are commonly red" or exclusive "they are commonly not skin toned".

"sheep can either be white or not"
While technically correct, is non descriptive sentence that when used in fact highlights the fact that the color of the sheep does not change the fact that it's a sheep.
>>
>>2797499
>>2797473

premature posting. Meant to conclude that my point is that there isn't just one definition of the word. The definition of tumblr nose isn't "big ambigous noses that may or may not be red", but rather it's the two separate definitions highlighted above
>>
>>2797496
Ah that's constantly a problem for me. I'm seeing now that sketches need to have little errors or else it really does fuck you up later. I figured that it's alright because you can always fix things later, but that's just a waste of time and effort.

people keep telling me the previous version looks better. is it really more of a regression?
>>
>>2797582
First picture have more character to it, so maybe that's why.
>>
>>2797582
I'm not a trained artist, but there's two reasons why I like the original better.
A. It's sloppier and less defined in certain places, which makes the bad anatomy not stand out as much
B. It has more character, which another Anon already talked about.

Do some Loomis, get those proportions down.
>>
>>2797582

Sadly, yes, I have to agree. There's a lot more character overall to the one on the left and it's a lot better when it comes to structure, placement of the features and proportion. The one on the right is uncanny valley territory whereas the one on the left does not suffer from this.
>>
>>2797584
>>2797586
>>2797588
fuck, thanks
>>
>>2797582
The left side has better values, construction, block-in, and anatomy-wise it's just way more accurate, plus you have the interest of the grimy textures. The right side has much better rendering, but otherwise it's just a polished turd. It has no hard edges to contrast the soft ones, no juicy dark blocks of shadows, no construction whatsoever and it has gained the sterile and over-rendered look of most beginner digital painters.

So fundamentally the left is better in every way but the rendering. The right side is better in terms of technical skill / rendering, but that's literally the only thing you got right with it.

Make sense? Study your fundamentals again and stop jumping ahead to rendering before you have checked proportions, values, perspective and composition. Obviously you were paying much more attention to them and must have dropped off in your studies (never stop studying a subject once you start, it's use it or lose it) or just got lazy or too focused in on the cool new tricks you learned to make it look shiny and kewl. Keep that shit up and you'll be a turd polisher.
>>
>>2797582
The previous picture has a more interesting lighting set up, but the new one is better display of ability
>>
>>2797582
Drawing-wise there isn't much improvement, and the reason why the new one lacks character is that it's too "licked". Too much careful blending going on.

Usually this is an issue of traditional painters, but I guess it also affects digital artists. Try to leave the brush strokes alone so that the painting looks more organic, don't blend everything indiscriminately.

The second painting has less value depth and the light source is too diffuse so it doesn't look nearly as dramatic.

The first one is much better composed because you're drawn from the light on the scarf, up to the neck and hair, and to the eyes. The eyes are in a dark spot so the whites stand out and you look at 'em.

In the second picture there's no real focus point, since there's no meaningful value transition around the eyes.

The fact that the face is the second painting is uniformly rendered makes it less interesting. Wonder why those amazing Chinese painters are found unappealing by many? That's why. If you look at great painters like Sargent you'll see that they'll render very carefully what you need to look at, and simplify things that are not as important. This is how actual eyes work, so it benefits you in terms of realism.

Yes. Also if you look up "gurney journey automated selectivity" there's some cool stuff generated from eye-tracking software that illustrates anons point (where people look the longest/the most is more detailed, places they ignored are blurred).

A lot of "normal" photos don't have a lot of subtleties. Photos don't necessarily translate well to drawing, and we prefer to exaggerate some things in them to make them more interesting (a classic example would be to push distance fog, there tends to be a lot more fog in paintings than photographs because distance is otherwise harder to convey).

The same is true for colors. I find trying to accurately copy colors from a photograph serves as a good base, but if the lighting was too bland and neutral, at some point I'm better off pushing it into a certain direction.

Thankfully this can be done (cheaply) with filters and curves, along with masking and painting (decide on a palette, then cool or warm certain areas of your painting). The more advanced way to do it would be to plan this shit out in advance, but drawing out subtle colors from a bland ref is kinda like drawing from imagination, you'll have a hard time doing it unless you already have some practice with stylizing your colors.

Your forms have improved a lot! I feel like you might want to work on what the form themselves are (mouth creases, nose bridge and brow/keystone areas are weird, as well as the ear), but the way you shade your forms comes out a lot clearer. Now you just need to study more of the anatomy itself.

Also, don't shade the hair in tiny strands, start with big masses just like for skin (or anything else). Look at how other artists do rough sketches of hair, then selectively add detail onto that (in most important areas, like the outlines and light-shadow transitions)

Do people really get motivated from seeing others get better?

A successful, skilled artist showing off a picture from their kid years and one now that they have 20+ years of drawing on their back just looks offensively condescending to me.

And then everyone goes like "omg such development I can do it too". How do you even reach that conclusion? The guy who posted that didn't do it to motivate you, he did it for the ego strokes. At best, to patronizingly admit that he was once as awful as you are now. It means nothing. And then you go and stroke their ego anyways.

Am I the only who sees this? It's one of the most pathetic things about this board and art in general.
>>

You're mostly right. I Don't see why people are "calling you out". I to have achieved a higher anatomical understanding than her and I would point out the same flaws as this anon did. She is only 17 though so It's a good start. I bet in 3 years time she will understand the complexities enough to break them down and make her own out of it. She is in the beginning process of learning how planes , materials and lights are working together. Hope she draws from imagination aswell. Refference is good and all but it's pretty awesome to have such an adequate understanding of the subject that you no longer need to rely on refference. The next level would be to have such a big library that you could sit in isolation, without being able to see the seasons go by yet still be able to draw them with realistic accuracy. To understand and break down everything we see and percieve in vision. To be able to draw a persons past through the lines of his face today. I am on this path myself. Seems like anon here is to. You hatin or do you just not believe it to be true? Try and change your perspective a bit guys.

this is the very reason why /ic/ is such a bitter shithole of failed artists, who try to keep others to the standards they can't acieve on their own.

There is being honest and there is being a dick. "You can do better" is useless comment, since it can apply to basically everything. In real life you don't even have to be perfect, you just need to be good enough.

I don't ask you to pat everybody on the head and give everyone participation awards. just ignoring mediocre artist is enough punishment.

"Critiques" like "you suck" are not the way to break someone's overconfidence in their skill. You just say that to deliberately make someone's day worse and you are proud of it for some reason.

>>2801935
But It IS awesome - for someone, who few months earlier was able to draw only stickmans and knew nothing about anatomy. Or do whatever thing he thought he was not able to do before.

If you can't relate and you always felt your pictures are shit, then i can only feel sorry for you. Is that why you can't allow anyone to feel good about their progress? Because you had to bear feeling like shit comparing yourself to everyone else, and now other people need to go through the same shit?

Are we really beliving they actually think they're objectively awesome in comparison to professionals? Because if so, then i'm afraid it's a lost cause and some random nameless asshole telling them they're shit is not going to burst their bubble.

And - finally - if they REALLY think at this point - yep, that's it. I'm a drawgod, the long lost son of Loomis and Bob Ross, i can draw everything now - isn't it good that they decide to leave the competition? They're your rivals on the market you know. Good for you you're already better! You don't have to worry about them.

>But It IS awesome - for someone, who few months earlier was able to draw only stickmans and knew nothing about anatomy

nice backpeddling. They didnt say awesome progress.

Nice help you are faggot. This is exactly what I was talking about, you would rather see them embarrassed and shattered when trying to get work than help them out. Steel isnt forged on a lukewarm flame.
