Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Working on getting proportions right; this is about the 40th skull I've done in the past few weeks.

Still so many errors...but I've seen some definite improvement in my angles and shapes, and also in the steadiness of my hand. Drawing w/ overhand grip is so much better. This one's about 14"x14". Drawing based on proportion instead of sight size is so much harder.

You can't just study construction without applying it. Study those things once you get a feel that you kinda get it then apply it by drawing from life/ref then imagination. If you failed then go back and analyze what is it that you're lacking.

Repeat this over and over. learn and apply the knowledge.

If you're burning out take a break. But don't stop thinking about what you've learned.

Chickenscratch is a huge red flag of a beginner - either way, having confident lines will make your finished works look cleaner

this sounds a lot like the attitude of someone who draws for two weeks then gets frustrated and quits lmao

There is no straight answer. Drawing is a lot like getting swole. You have all these exercises, supplements, and routines that you can indulge - but no single combination works for everyone. Ask people who've made it - very few instances will you have two people who had the exact same path in terms of getting good. You have to try everything and see what works for you in terms of workflow and learning. Which means not being afraid of wasting time and making mistakes because even if you've wasted time on something that doesn't work out, you've generally still learned something from it. You give me a vibe of frustration and wanting the secret trick that will get you good (I know this because you asked 'what do i need to do to get better') - I would be frustrated if after an apparent year of "study" I'm still chickenscratching, too. But needless to say, we all go at our own pace.

What I can tell you in terms of applying yourself is you need a balance of fun and play - study vs. drawing what you wanted to draw (whether it be hot girls with guns, castles, or spaceships). Through imaginative and fun works is when you realize how far you've come. You wouldn't study for months and never take the exam and have the fulfillment of getting that A, right?

And as for chickenscratching, I'd go through Han's line and circle exercises every day as a warmup to build up line confidence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk

Anyways, I think I'm rambling. I just wanted to put in what I thought would be beneficial to you.

Trying to draw manikins with decent gesture. I'm not very good. Any advice? I know it's chicken scratchy
>>
>>2788101
Personally I don't think his approach to dynamicity of the body (for beginners) is too helpful when half of this thread can't draw a box in perspective properly, let alone his mannikin's ribcage and pelvis which would just be a shitshow. I would just go to Mattesi or some established gesture teacher, touch up on your 3D thinking, then go back to Loomis because mannikins are actually quite useful to learn from in terms of placing the body in a believable pose.
>>
>>2788082
Here is how you avoid chickenscratch:
When you draw a line, don't draw another one right on top of it.

Your drawing is going to look like shit because you're using chickenscratching like a crutch right now, but once you abandon in you'll get better. It'll force you to really draw, rather than just making a bunch of guesses.
>>
>>2788105
Yeah the box is fucked now that I look at it. My excuse is that I threw it down without really thinking but if I can't draw a box without thinking then I can't really say I can draw a box. Bluh more practice needed on that I guess. I'll look up Mattesi

how to get the face parts right ?
I try my best not to symbol draw but...
>>
>>2788128
honestly you should fix your drawings before you start rending these. measure if you have to. if you have photoshop you can send the pic to your self and check the overlay in photoshop to see how accurate it is, though learning how to measure is a skill you need to develop more.
>>
>>2788140
Did you read the advice left for you last thread? Spend time practice basic shapes, and try to practice observational skills (ie drawing what is actually there, not what you see, AKA symbols)
>>
>>2788140
Measure better. Which is to say, re-read Keys to Drawing.

Also, take your time. If it takes an hour to get the angles of the eye right, it takes an hour.
>>
>>2788115
also ghosting your lines will help get the line right or at least much closer when you actually put pen to paper.

thats feeling out the shape before actually drawing it right?

yeah, basically draw the line repeatedly above the paper so you get the necessary motion down.

>>
>>2788160
You're drawing like you are unsure of yourself. To get cleaning lines make the stroke in one confident motion and if you mess up just ctr+z over and over until its the way you want it and use canvas rotation to your advantage. It takes some practice but it will quickly become habit. I do it without thinking. Watch this video where he explains it with visuals http://www.ctrlpaint.com/videos/fluid-linework
I didnt learn it from him, but have been applying to to my work for years. Good luck!

Your lines dont have anything to do with the pen pressure btw its just because of your lack of confidence when you make strokes.

>>
>>2788333
sure but he isnt. out of the mistakes i listed (which he himself acknowledged as MISTAKES and NOT stylizing) the only differences that he claimed were intentional actually make it worse, the neck length and nose. have you seen a nose that makes a literal point like that in real life? it looks like shit, also the neck leng is probably great in giraffe land but we arent in giraffe land we're in human land. but then that opens up yet another mistake, the neck muscles leads to... fucking nowhere when it should go to the pit of the neck. maybe 'bad drawing' was the wrong word to use and i should have used something like 'bad construction' or 'bad measurements' or 'bad' proportions' or whatever but the fact that his linework is great and its masked (read polished) doesnt excuse all the stuff that he outright admitted are MISTAKES. thats an old piece by the way

is it also maintaining focus that is a part of courage?

This. Plus, drawing one line vs drawing a hundred lines speeds up your drawing which, in turn, speeds up improvement

>>
>>2788082
Bro I get ur frustrated but don't take it too seriously

If you're on a tablet next time you're laying out your stretches, just do large curves/circles in one stroke(ex:ear to chin line). And if you get it wrong, ctrl+z until you get it right.

Do Matt Kohr's exercises where you have two dots and you have to draw one straight line between them. Once you can do that easily upgrade to a third dot off set in the middle so you're doing curves and hitting all threes.

Its work but in the long run it will actually save you time because you will be able to lay out your sketches much quicker and your lines will look much better.
>>

I wanted to try and help you but I just woke up.

Just keep in mind that the eyelevel line, and vanishing points are just TOOLS to help create consistant perspective for multiple objects in the scene. Try drawing the main object in your picture first, then create perspective lines from it and use these lines to draw the other objects in your scene. Typically is only becomes important when you are drawing blocky objects like buildings, and when drawing buildings you'd use 3 point perspective. If you just have a portrait of a person then you wouldn't bother with measuring perspective, but drawing a dozen people walking down a city street then you would. Try looking at photos and creating perspective lines.
>>
>>2788744
first off all vertical lines in 1-pt perspective are perpendicular to the horizon, all horizontal lines are parallel. first draw a box, connect its corners to the vp then fill in the missing vertical/horizontal lines at the desired depth. dunno how you managed to get straight lines to the vp and not on your box so try ghosting a few times before you lay your lines down.

Newb like the rest so be weary of my advice.

I think this is what you wanted. This is what every book or tutorial on drawing starts with. Draw big shapes then check and refine them a little. Then move on to the next biggest stuff. Continue the process so on and so forth. I am really quick and sloppy with my block in. takes like a minute or 2 then I play with proportions now that i have some thing to judge against on my page.
>>
>>2788995

Hi, guys! I'm really struggling with drawing, it usually just makes me cry when I sit down to practice. You see, I have a mindset of a programmer, and I simply don't get the concept of practice here. First I thought it's just like getting fit: if you do 10 push ups every day, you'll get in better shape. Now I see that it's not the case. I remain just as shit before. I'm starting and giving up on tutorials constantly. I usually follow the actual lesson well (I mean, it still sucks, but at least it's better than my average), but when it comes to practice on my own, like getting the shapes of a random body right from the Internet I'm just paralyzed. The time investment is also something which puzzles me. Like how long would it take to draw a human which does not resembles a hunchback if I can only spare 1-2 hours each day for drawing? Seriously, if I could get to a level like most of you guys here who do things "wrong" I would be out of this world, I would be so glad.

I've read both /ic/'s and this general's sticky, but I just fear that whichever book I start with I'll end up the same.

I know I'm asking much, but could one of you put together a list of books/tutorials to follow trough? You know, like in a school, where the classes are building upon each other, thus if I finish book 1, I'll be ready for book 2 etc.

My best guess now would be to go with: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, and then pick up Fun with a Pencil.

You need to chill out dude, don't rush it. No need to cry either. Just take your pencils and draw something from life, like a bunch of apples in front of you. Yes, make it from life, that's important. Try to nail the shape of the objects, so it sits correctly in the space (it probably won't work for now, but you will get better). Do a bunch of these drawings, take your time and come back.

Take your time, go with the basics. As stated above, Fun with A Pencil is a nice place to start but drawabox.com is great too. If you're a 100% beginner who's never used a pencil to draw in his life, start by learning some perspective and basic shapes, it really helps and I wish I knew this before diving head first into figure drawing.

If you want to learn more organic forms, try a hand at gesture drawing, it's fairly easy to do, while fun at the same time.

Also, even with a programmer mindset, you can still draw. I know a few programmers who are good artists too, and I know one guy who's a brilliant programmer but a fucking shittyass artist who refuses to improve. Don't be the crappy programmer who gives fuckall about art and piss off artists on your development team

Essentially what you need aside from the fundamentals is the will to improve and the will to practice. Always believe you can do better and and draw a lot, and I mean a lot.

Good luck Anon.

Porn is the most essential thing to be able to do. Also, you're a fucking moron. Do you even know what ecorche is? Have fun being a perma beginner. Construction doesn't mean shit without anatomy. Will you fucking moron beginners understand that already? /ic/ is just conditioning you to become dependent on references without any imaginitive drawing whatsover by trying to scare you with "symbol drawing". Construction derives from the form of anatomy. Your end goal is probably to draw tube leg anime girls like some 15 year old on deviantart.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP--30V8ZA4

So please, reevaluate your life, so you realize you need to kill yourself.

And again, you once again prove my point you dont know anything about anatomy, or drawing for that matter, if you cant trace the models in the ref i posted.

disprove my points. I actually have some drawing mechanic commentary, all you fuckheads do is respond with memes and calling people autists. Its not autism, its called having a passion you idiots. If you dont have passion in drawing, you wont make it.

You guys are the biggest shitposters and the reason why /ic/ sucks. You dont want to learn how to draw, you dont want to talk about how to draw, you just want to make yourself look superior to a bunch of subhumans on the internet with your "less autistic" than thou attitude.

>im retarded
Once again, disapprove my fucking point that muscle tracing is essential, form derives from anatomy, and you guys dont know anatomy for shit. If you non-autists are so smart, calm, and mature, disprove my points and show the beginners im retarded.

And if you cant, get off the fucking board, because you literally contribute less than someone who spouts, "loomis, loomis, loomis"

Just fucking do it. Don't be afraid of failure it's part of the fucking process. You want to draw head? Learn the constructions do it 100 times, draw from ref or life. You can't draw nose, eyes, lips? Learn the anatomy go on youtube look at videos on how people simplify the features then fill in the details. Draw it 100 times.

Draw and when you can't do something go look for the solution. Don't expect for people to write a schedule for you. Everyone process of learning is different. If you can't do it by yourself there's cheap classes on the internet like schoolism. You can even pay to have a mentor.

you drew something once. Do multiple and try to fix what you think is wrong with each iteration. also use a reference if you have to. The lips are lacking, the ear is too long, etc etc.

Cant say much since not into coloring, but that looks muddy as shit and i think you got the light source wrong. If I were you, I would just draw something completely new, find an inspirational artist, and try to achieve that. What i think makes a good painting is something that has clear distinct mapped out shadows and highlights like this guy said >>2788787

Maybe you could try drawing just an arm from imagination and render that? Coloring is great because it makes you really conscious of the form, more so than cross contours i think.
>>
>>2789046
I like to believe that alot of people have this romanticized notion of art, being a straight arrow path of do this do that and you'll make it, but everybody is different, so what works for some may not work for others. All in all, art is the struggle the individual. I too am a programmer but an artist as well.
>>
>>2788744

Draw a 100 or 200 boxes. It will click before you know it. Also always ghost your lines. Don't listen to that other guy telling you to practice lines before jumping into boxes. Take a few minute doing the circle and lines practice from drawabox then work on your boxes. You don't need to concentrate on one thing because its all connected.

When you draw boxes you pretty much drawing lines.

I've seen videos of it and had it explained but I still can't wrap my head around it - when and where are you supposed to use the multiply blending mode in painting?

I've been doing base color/block in -> new layer for highlights/shadows -> final layer to blend everything together. All on a normal blend mode.
>>
>>2789255
>>2789255
>multiply blending mode in painting?
pretty sure youre only supposed to use that to darked areas in mass. for blending you just play with air brushes/opacity/flow

It kinda looks like you tried to construct it, but halfway through said "fuck it" and just did whatever.
The lower half of the face is completely missaligned with the rest, and the hair is just a mess of lines. The neck is also out of position

Hey thanks for the reply I appreciate it

>>2789522
I quite like this its kind of stark in a good way. The eyes seem stylized/anime influenced. Ease up on the dark tone on the eyebrow, they're a bit too straight and solid as well. A little bit of the same issue as well on some parts of the eyelash. They're hair, let them breathe they're slightly too dense.

The left cheek(viewers perspective) white shading is too harsh/sharp. I'd go a bit more bold/dark on the lip shading, in fact you should push values on the whole thing minus the eyebrows.

Overall though nice job should just push values more in general
>>
>>2789667
thank you so, so much for the input! i do think that i may have stylized the eyes by accident. it's something i'm really trying to work on. i've saved your input to review again later. thanks again!
>>
>>2788499
the thumbnail doesnt read at all which suggests you need to work on your values. it looked like an abstract paining until I opened it up
>>
>>2789522
honestly thought the thumbnail was a photo. you just need to work on the way lgiht reflects off the skin, and use a textured brush so the skin doesnt look like clay
