>mfw when i realize literally every great piece of art was drawn from reference

it begs the question rly, could we ever truly create something totally unique from ourselves when our brains rely on references from all our life to 'create' something in the first place. I always wanted to draw/paint something that had never been seen before by human eyes or thought by another, then of course I grew up and realized that wasn't possible.

Really depends on what you consider great pieces of art.
There are people who really worship artists like Piet Mondrian who were not technically in the same league as many of the old masters but influenced much of art and design as we know it today.
There are also people who really look up to some renaissance masters who are gods in the technical department but otherwise were part of the art bubble and weren't particularly unique in their fields at the time.
From your post, you've already made the decision on whether the 'evidence' exists or not and are simply looking to validate your opinions.
Also if we're nitpicking, people don't draw things they have no reference of. Even if you were to draw something from 'imagination', you are still pulling from your library of (visual/auditory/etc) experiences. That being said, how you combine your experiences to provide new experiences for people (and yourself) can be extremely powerful.

This is something an idiot actually thinks to be true.

Algen is as normie as it gets. Hardly an example of savant autism in art.
Beksinski drew from Imagination

Not true but "serious" realism, complex paintings need references. Something like picrelated. It's not cheap painting. But in same time look at old masters. Most of the draw from imagination. And animators draw from imagination. I think it's matters of what you draw and your own preferences.
