Take a ninja and fuse it with something else related to the character.
Maybe your ninja likes beetles; Make beetle-esque armor for them. Maybe he uses spells; Hang scrolls or spell tags on them. Maybe they're part of the wolf clan; Put tasteful tufts of fur on them.
Do some research find some resources and get some thumbnails done, Anon.

The black jump suit look that we know of as the standard bearer of the ninja look is actually supposed to be a kuroko, or Kabuki stage hand.
Ninja's weren't so much assassins as secret undercover agents who blended into crowds to get at their targets. During a play, nobody would be expecting a stage hand to be part of the actual play so when a kuroko jumped out of the back stage and onto the front it came as a surprise.
So if you you really wanted to make a ninja stand out, dress him up as a normal guy, until the last second.

Look at the origin of Ninjas. If you head to the Wiki, you'll see that ninjas were huge on disguises - in order to infiltrate and do whatever they were supposed to do in the enemy base/house/compound.
Also a story behind your ninja will always serve you better for designing.
like- this ninja came from a noble house that was renowned for its amazing bards. He was hired by the enemy to sing to his troops. Basically then you can do awesome shit like turn his instrument into a sheathe for his blade and have his decorations be weapons etc etc etc.
Hope that helps?
