Challenge: Draw a head every day for 30 days. Thread #2
Pick your own starting date, but once you start, don't stop. If you skip a day, make it up with a second drawing the following day.
Let's do this, /ic. Let's enhance our understanding of the human/animal/robot head.

Good work OP
d11 dying
why does imagination suck so badddd
Quick sketch from imagination. Actually done to try new brush.
Day 9
my proportions are still wonky.
http://humanae.tumblr.com/random
Here's a quick link to a photo of a random face for practice. It's useful for if you want to try different facial structures. Though a major con is that all the photos are front facing.
Day 4
>>2771092
nice, shame about the con, still super useful
>>2771192
is that a guy or a girl?
day 12
day 12 major fail
day 13 still fail
>>2770601
Good construction. Good values. Good nose. Dat jawline.
>>2770653
Should use simple brushes. Don't try to paint with masses unless you really understand those masses. You'll just spend forever pushing paint blobs around. Good way to waste a lot of time. Do more lines!
>>2770656
You're drawing shapes, not forms. Need to draw forms for the drawing to be good. Prescription is to leave off photos for a while and draw from life a lot more. Draw your hand a lot - that will teach you fast.
>>2771084
Appeal = good. Don't fake the ears! Very unclear where light source is - if you're gonna render it, gotta know that.
>>2771192
You're not going to learn much using a washed out photo like that. You need light that defines the forms if you want to learn the forms.
>>2771523
More Loomis.
>>2771583
You're rendering too soon. Don't try to figure out the color, lighting, and drawing all at once. Richard Schmid can paint alla prima bc he's been doing it for 50 years, but you should break it down into steps.
>>2771588
good values
>>2771684
cute. would be cuter if you figured out the neck/trapezius/shoulder a little more.
>>2770496
i dont quite understand whats off...

>You're rendering too soon. Don't try to figure out the color, lighting, and drawing all at once. Richard Schmid can paint alla prima bc he's been doing it for 50 years, but you should break it down into steps.
Thanks for the crit. I'm still trying to figure out a workflow for color that I can feel comfortable with. Once I get past the initial lay-in phase, all confidence evaporates.
>>2771840
Dean...?
starting today.
just started this but already getting very frustrated
>>2771583
days 13 and 14
>>2770653
Half from refs. You can guess which from my fucked imagination.
Damn faces, why it's so hard.
>>2771833
>Should use simple brushes. Don't try to paint with masses unless you really understand those masses. You'll just spend forever pushing paint blobs around. Good way to waste a lot of time. Do more lines!
It's pretty simple brush actually. But whatever only hard round today.
Lines are boring and I don't like to draw in lines. Also my lines relatively okay, at least from common angles.

>>2772395
are you drawing what you see or using construction?
>>2772620
Forget about drawing the face and just work on your construction, cause you're obviously not constructing your face properly (if at all)
>>2772661
Question are you an actual critique or do you think you're one, if you are one can you post work?
>>2772669
it does not matter if they are an actual critique there advice is right
>>2772671
their*
>>2772669
Don't give me none of this. Look at your two constructed heads (on the left), then look at the ones from loomis before cleanup. Work on your construction.
>>2772674
>Question are you an actual critique or do you think you're one, if you are one can you post work?
>>2772728
sketch a quick doodle of a bunny
not so pleased with this one
>>2772657
Sort of both. I usually start with construction, determine face features and then paint and try to see proportion mistakes or features misplacement and fix is via warp transform.
>>2772844
Don't you feel like that's kinda cheating?
>>2772857
Different anon, not at all. Though he would be a better artist if he learned to do it all by hand in the first try instead of having to warp it around to fix mistakes.
>>2772874
Seems like its one step above just tracing
>>2772857
No, why should I feel so? Should I just delete it and draw from the scratch if there is mistake?
I'm glad I ever see these mistakes and can fix it at all. Not always though.
>>2772874
I want to learn to do it correctly in first try but I can't. Though I use warp less often and for rather minor fixes. I used to, like, select the whole head and reduce vertical size cuz proportions was so fucked.
>>2772879
A different anon
It's just moving things around and theres a limit to how much you can reshape your drawing. It's much easier and faster to re draw if it's fucked. It's not a one click fix it all. It just made things more convenient.
Also drawing on a screenless tablet is different from pencil / pen on paper. I can draw a decent face on paper and my hand can move freely while changing the way I hold the pencil. It's impossible to do the same on a tablet.

Not sure what the ref for the one on the right was, but I repainted it to give you an idea of how to make it more realistic.
The forms on yours look a bit rough and blocky- I think you need to work on blending and on recognizing forms in general.
>>2773274
Whew, I'm gonna try something like that.
There was no ref for recognizing form and I'm still bad at do it from memory.
Thanks for feedback and overpaint.

day 16
not feeling good today, kinda down and depressed about my art which is rarer these days but tends to happen at that time of the month :/
analysis ..not sure if this helps, I think post-critique is probably better
Today, random imagination stuff. Don't really like cartoonish/disney styles but it was kinda fun.
>>2775309
The cartoonish style is the most interesting thing in that picture, while also the least detailed. Your art could use some varying line weight, because everything else looks so boring
>>2775075
Pretty good. Ear seems slightly off place.
Don't be afraid to add more values to the face itself, highlight the shape of the features.
>>2775319
>detailed and complicated art (things I will never be able to do) is boring and vain
>simpler art (things i might be able to do one day because i can't yet) is the best and most interesting!
Seems like you show up everytime this guy posts something. Would you please redline and improve his stuff or show us your work ?
>>2775319

The details in the old man are really nice, same with the women and the bald folks. I personally like everything except the cartoony stuff (still nice, not my taste).

Shoot, I had a tutorial awhile back that suggested breaking the mouth down into shapes. Can't find it, but take some time to look at mouths and try breaking them down into circular forms, maybe? This is crude as heck, but something like that is how I was taught to break them up.

it's just a soft grain filter. if you're referring to the texture of the brushstrokes, it's due to the watercolor brush in manga studio.
>>2777016
>>2777098
i've not used sai, but you can't go wrong with photoshop.
>>2777016
Mind sharing your brush setting if they're not the default? I hating painting in mangastudio but I might give it another whirl.
>>2774747
Should I still post shit if I don't finish? Day 2 and 3 came out wrecked and show how little I know about painting and color, but I used blurry photos both days because I'm a dumb-ass.
>>2777223
here you go. i use a second version of that brush for blending where amount and density of paint are dropped down to 0 and 10 respectively.
>>2776622
Thanks, anon. I'll give that a try and put it into practice.
>>2777136
What did you use for this picture?
>>2777401
But I hate manga studio
>>2777402
Is there any way to calibrate photoshop brushes to like manga brushes.
I tried but all I gets is chalk and pencil
Does this count?
>>2775739
>do you use structural lines
Oh yeah sure, if I want to make a decently realistic head I almost always use the 5 basic lines, hair/eyebrows/nose/chin and center line. If i want to make a stylized head i don't use them.
I don't do studies at all, been wanting to recently but they're just boring as fuck. On the other hand, I do "study" or analyze every fucking head I see and i strongly advise you to do it too. exactly like this >>2775077 but in your head. everytime you watch a movie for example or even talk to someone. and that sticks to you. Hell i saw so much of christian bale's nose from batman I know it perfectly.
>>2777098
if you mainly do line art, then 100% mangastudio or sai over Ps, manga studio is also 100% better than sai though. you can really paint well in manga studio, but Ps has more "options" i guess.
>>2775737
I try to jump in every time there are those figure invention threads. Where someone posts boxes to adhere to representing the rib cage and pelvis. More of those sorts of threads would be cool.

>>2777557
I'm realizing I need to do that sort of analysis more, I have a hard time doing it in my head and remembering it. I doodled mindlessly for years so now I'm trying to fix my brain's misconceptions? I don't know.
my heads from imagination don't come out close to yours. I will keep practicing though. thanks for posting and replying.

>>2777966
use refs my boy + practice perspective and form building exercises like building basic shapes (cubes, spheres, cones, etc) in different angles and connecting them or passing them through one another. That'll help you a whole lot in constructing everything from imagination.

It's not like there's a reason we can't have both going at the same time. I mean, the ones who want to only do the head challenge aren't forced to post in the figure thread or can join in any time they feel like it if these threads become long running activities and not just a one-time thing.

>>2779359
your understanding of the underlying structure of the head is lacking, and you're not placing the features of the face along the form of the head.
if i were you i would practice building the head up using basic box forms, focusing on the planes of the head (check the image in OP -- that kind of stuff) rather than facial features.

Bill Perkins assignment. 30 min timer. i need to get faster
>>2792419
The problem here isn't speed, anon. The timer is only there to stop you noodling around. At this point you shouldn't be worried about rendering or even getting a likeness, it's not something anyone will achieve in 30m.
You should be focused on breaking down your light and shadow masses into clear shapes with good value separation between them, then you can get on to fixing those edges. You have areas in shadow that are lighter than your light halftones, and edges in form shadows that are harder than cast shadows.

>>2790355
thanks...deffo not as good as that guy, but i appreciate the compliment>>2790554
>>2790554
hey your forms are pretty good, that nose is killer. but your edges are killing your paintings. soften soft edges (hair, cheeks, similar values, eyelashes, tiny details, eyes)
it makes a huge difference because our eyes IRL can't focus on so much detail at once.
richard schmidt has a good chapter on them
>>2792435
>>2792764
Thanks for the tips. So I tried again trying to focus more on clearer value separation. Timer got me again. It's hard to take focus off of the timer. Maybe it's affecting my decisions. Why does Bill say it's very important to stop after the timer and start anew if I haven't finished by then? I feel like I could just continue from here without a time limit and nail down the values more.
>>2792870
TURN OFF THE TIMER PLS
in music, tempo is the last thing we work on.
in art, how fast you go is the last thing you work on
i dont know who this bill guy is but stop listening to that. use your common sense. you can't nail the values with a timer
if it takes ten hours to get the values right just DO IT until you understand them
>>2792870
I think the point is to get you to simplify things and work in bigger shapes, instead of getting bogged down by details or trying to get a likeness. It's just an exercise for getting you comfortable with values, not about painting a good portrait. You should still finish your painting if you like how it's going, it's just not what this 30 min exercise is about. You've got a good result, though, clearer values, nicer edges and better looking shapes.
If you're having trouble with the timer it can either mean that you're getting your values wrong and spending too much time going back to fix things, or that you're focusing too much on details. It might help if you have a clear plan before starting the painting. Draw a small thumbnail sketch and and break it down into big shapes and value masses - do it in 4 or 5 values at most, then use that as a guide for your painting. Work big, fill out the entire canvas, and only then start going in on those details. It's not a big deal if your values are a little off compared to the reference as long as the relationships between them make sense. If you look at Bill's demo it's not a particularly accurate portrait, but the values are well-defined and it reads well.
I know how tough these can be at first, but stay calm and work at your normal pace. You're doing great anon, you'll get them eventually.

>If you're having trouble with the timer it can either mean that you're getting your values wrong and spending too much time going back to fix things
This is definitely true. I think I just need more focused practice to fix that issue. My values often get muddy, so I'll keep doing these studies with and try to focus on the value separation, shapes, and edges. Also I wont worry about time as much. Just need to focus on the actual aspects of the study.
Anyway I went further with that last one because it was fun, and I'm done studying for the day. Thanks again anons. I don't post much so your tips have been very helpful.

I recognize that NMA class, I remember that you're not supposed to mix the values at least not that much, I would go as far as to recommend to not use pen pressure at all or use acrylic or oils as he does in the videos
thanks for the feedback guys

Looks pretty solid to me. Only thing I'd say is maybe the jaw fell a little low in the back.

The two on the right and the one in the bottom middle? These look great though! Only thing is you do what most of us do and make the near eye too big/ exaggerate the perspective.

Gorgeous.

Draw the skull under your face. You'll notice that the girl's eyes are floating.

This is great! I'd say her left eye is creeping forward a bit but I can see nice facebones otherwise.
