Hi /ic/, I'm looking for some Christmas gift recommendations for a newer/amateur artist. Is there any sets or products that you would consider essentials or just nice to have? My bf just uses standard paper and pencil, but I would like to purchase him some nicer materials (paper/pencils/pens/markers/etc). Also I'm very lenient on the prices. Thank you!
That depends on how open he is to trying new materials, but a set of pastel pencils and some nice paper would be a good bet.
Or if he likes pens, get him a fountain pen and bottle of ink and tell him to stop being a pleb.
If you want to play it super safe, just better graphite pencils and a nice sketchbook. If he's a hipster, a set of Palominos and a Moleskine. Or for actually good materials, some Hi-Unis/Tombow Monos and a Hahnemuhle/Fabriano/Stillman & Birn sketchbook.

some of those nice squishy gray erasers because everything else sucks.

If he only has used pencils then maybe getting him a small set of watercolours would be nice. You can buy a few small brushes and either some nice pans or some small tubes. Then get a watercolour Moleskine sketchbook with it.
It's a bit more interesting than something like "nice" pencils which don't really feel all that different from normal ones especially if you are an amateur.
Also a Pentel brushpen is a fantastic gift. Everyone seems to love them.
