Draw something you are a fan of. if you've watched a tv show or a movie or played a video game recently that you really enjoyed then draw fanart of that. You don't have to make everything a planned attempt at gaining the optimal amount of exposure.

At some point you'll only get diminishing returns anyway when focusing only on the extremely popular fandoms because your Overwatch fanart will be buried under 3 million other Overwatch fanart drawings.

What are things you love, that you wish you were making? Or are similar in feel to your original content? Draw in fans that like what you like. So when you make something you like, they will like what you like. Popularity for the sake of popularity is stupid, as when you stop drawing things they like but you don't, they might lose interest, but popularity because of like-minded individuals should get you more dedicated fans.

I am a fan of a couple things, but they're pretty obscure themselves or at least not in the amount of level videogames are. I'll likely fare no better drawing them than drawing my own stuff. My intended course was to become so good at drawing that I can stick with original content (without catering to porn factor) sort of like how nbekkaliev and Takena Nagao did.

good point. The kind of things I personally like, people generally don't care about them.

My biggest obstacle, I guess, is when I watch something I never feel the need to draw it. I think fanart is a way of people to claim parts of what they love for themselves by putting it in their own style, but I never felt driven to seize something like that. I also think that if I like something so much, I want to leave it alone instead of fucking it up with my shitty technical skills.

My best course of action is to git gud, but it's delayed gratification.

Thinking of fanarts, I would probably try draw a popular character in a way no one else does! There, classic graphic artworks and a really really close look (which I kinda lack, sadly...) at nature and surroundings may push you up to an idea you want to show through a character and a technique.

Actually I do have a retarded amount of fanart for books I read, but that's because I am given the liberty to make up my own designs and settings. It's the uncharted territory thing that makes me want to draw something, which isn't offered as much in games and TV shows. But it ain't the same in terms of familiarity for most people. The only type of fanart I like is curtsibling's, because it's recognizable yet original, and at the same time fucking hilarious.

I also think a problem is that I enjoy obscure things, so even if I did make fanart only for things I like, it's going to be a small group of people and not get me anywhere professionally or financially.
