So I would reference they way that plate armour rests on a body and always realize that you character needs a full range of motion without having their limbs and head sheered off by the pieces of steel.

Curving lines should always give the illusion that they wrap around, not that they curve and then come to a jagged stop when they bend away from view.

Finally, always be mindful of the perspective and various planes that each piece of armour rests on.
