I just got a new scanner.
This is the third thing I've scanned. Still trying to figure it out.
For some reason rotating it in photo viewer didn't work. Rotating it in ms paint brought it up to over 2mb for some reason.

I could have just resized it in paint. But I added a few lines to it since I first scanned it.

Nope.
You have some knowlage of how to draw a face but anithing down there looks pretty half assed.

I have nothing against stylized square hands but these look pretty bad. A good reference would be watching the sword in the stone, I love the motion of merlin and the stylization of other body parts (mostly the animals and creatures).

Go back to studying m8.

golden proportion pentagram method anime face

lemme know if staring at it while drawing an anime face (especially if you dont draw anime normally) helps you out

to easily get a ready to use golden proportion, draw a pentagram and use the inner part of the pentagon and one side of the triangle as your a and b respectively. grab another sheet of paper and mark those lengths down, then you can use a,b and a+b for pleasing proportions. experiment with different size pentagrams in unison with another, which will yield small distances and large distances that are in the golden ratio.

That's because that's exactly what it is. This was moreso anatomy practice, and I like to use characters I like for a "practice model" of sorts. I have also dabbled with my own kind of design of her with more "realistic" proportions than her original design for obvious reasons, so there's that.

remember the knuckles never look like a straight line, they usually have a rhythm depending on what the arm is doing, look at your own arm and obser how depending on the twist of your wrist differnt muscles pull all the way from your elbow forcing the hand into a set range of motion, also her feet look like a block but I don't know if that's intended.

Do you usually draw stuff, leave it unfinished, and come back later, or do you work on things until they're done? I ask because I think I saw this one before.

How does one go about getting really thin line work like pic related?
>>
>>2764753
Draw in very high resolution, resize when finished.
>>
>>2764753
Just small brush.
>>
>>2764759
I'm going to sound like a retard asking this but what does that do exactly? I thought high res was for things like making prints
>>
>>2764779
anon meant to draw with a larger canvas.
>>
>>2764779
No, you draw at high res as it'll make your lines more crisp. More pixels is your friend; don't be afraid to ask your computer to handle more--it was designed to be your bitch.
>>
>>2764789
>>2764792
So what i am gathering from this is to use both a large canvas, resolution and small brush? I read some stuff about cranking your stabilizer up too but I'm not too sure about that. No rules just tools and all that but I don't want to become reliant on it
>>
>>2764795

Large canvas because you can always scale/resize after. Bascially think of it has having a bigger than normal piece of paper where you can pick a spot and frame away.

Brush size is situational. When you resize the lines will get thinner and some overlapping mistakes will be less visible.

Use your stabilizer. Don't fall for bad advice that using it is a "crutch" it is there to help you and your hand for the tablet and your speed/style of drawing. As for the number to keep it on that is up to you because your hand is different from mine.
>>
>>2764779
Are you retarded? It's always better to draw at high resolution.

Stabilize is unnecessary. Plenty of great artists does without it.

I just read through some of his artbooks a few days ago. I think you did a good job emulating how he does skin. It seems like he practically pillow shades any skin that isn't boobs or butts. His hair normally isn't that ribbony; it's usually pretty textured and has stray strands. Her outfit is also way off. He puts a lot of detail and texture into his clothes to the point that the person wearing them looks overly simplified sometimes. His linework is never that thin and tight either.

By "practically pillow shades" I mean not exactly but having the same effect. The way he draws skin is very flat. There's little variation in value and he puts highlights right in the middle of limbs or on planes of the body that make no sense given how he's lit the clothes or even other parts of the body. Compare the way the values change on her left arm to her butt and the clothes around it >>2766226 or how the shadows in the hair and clothes in >>2766224 just don't happen on the faces.

I converted this picture to greyscale to emphasize my point. His skin is often much flatter and lit entirely differently than the rest of the picture, but he draws nice asses plenty of times so I'm pretty sure he's doing that to lead the eyes.
>>
>>2766325

That's front lighting, not pillow shading. It's similar to what you would see with flash photography. I agree that it has a flat value range so I see the point you're trying to make but pillow shading is a inappropriate term to apply here.

>>2766522
Well, taking away from the obvious (that there's a billion "anime styles" and so on), I noormally do it in the place you've marked, but I also draw the faces wider so it doesn't look as "sharp". I don't know, I don't really do much construction when I'm doing stylized stuff (which leads to stupid problems like pointed out above), it's more of a "if it looks good enough it works", but I chalk that attitude to my time doing comics.

This is really nice, love the moebius vibe and the general aesthetic which is nice and appealing. I think it would look nice if you hinted at some local colours/values though. Right now it seems a bit lifeless when you colour everything to be the same as though it's all made of stone. I think I saw your stuff in the other stylization thread.

You seem to have a good sense of costuming, was it through a lot of just costume studies? Or just paying real close attention to vidya characters and such. What goes through your mind when drawing these guys (especially the costuming)?

It's all great stuff, anyway. I think an actual critique would say to use more grey/black/white to help differentiate materials from each other. Even in this rough stage, it's important to know how values lie on a character, just like value grouping in a composition. Look at any of Dean Cornwell's paintings and how he composes figures and utilizes black suits to frame faces and such.
>>

>>
>>2766887
I just sort of consume a lot of media and save a lot of images of different costumes and different designs that I enjoy. I've got a huge reference folder. My process with something like this is starting with a pose and an overall body, then I lay on the clothes in large shapes with a focus on how the sillhouette will look with those shapes and then continue to define each piece of clothing, keeping in mind different layers adding decorations and things to enhance how the character looks and how their clothes reflect what they're supposed to do. With the character on the far right, I wanted his chest to show so that it would be easier to identify that he has 4 arms, so I started from there and decided to focus on his pants. A skirt would make him feel too egyptian, and long pants felt too Indian so I settled with the shorts and gave him a huge belt to split his torso from the short shape. I was also thinking about how the fight would go, and I wanted him to be quicker with a longer reach weapon so I chose to go with cloth since armor would probably impeded his ability to fight. I'll make sure to check out that guy ! Thanks for the suggestion

I really like your lines but your colours always seem a little bit unclear or unpure? something just doesn't look as clean or vibrant as it could.

I've butchered the mood you have going for the sake of contrast, mainly to give some sense of formlighting instead of all the meekly placed shadows. That and I have a strong preference toward clarity especially with the kind of lines you have. There are people that do make the looser style work like Tim Mcburnie and a number on zedigs inspiration blog so I imagine its a matter of making it work for you.

It probably just happens subconsciously in your brain while you're drawing, but sometimes it's nice to see what goes through other artists minds when making decisions.

value of the object: actual value in context
local value: value of the object in standard lighting conditions.

so the local value of a black object is very dark, even if its value can be quite light, e.g. because it's under a spotlight

there's the same distinction with local color/color (e.g. a yellow field appear purple because of atmos persp)

Thanks.

Thank you.
So basically it's all shit. The legs really are fucked up, you probably can't even tell which one is right/left leg. I thought the folds on sleeves were decent.

But I can't make sense of what you mean by the color palette being all over the place. There aren't that many colors. Can you explain a little bit more what you meant by that?

Yeah both are good, if anything the left one has more personality and charm to it. Right one looks too standard.

what i meant is that their is no harmony between your selection of colors. it looks as though you were attempting to use a primarily yellow/green/blue color scheme but beyond that made no consideration over the saturation of your hues or of what the image looks like in grayscale. In the end your yellows and blues are muddy and gross looking, while your greens are over saturated, which clashes against the red tones in the characters skin/eyes. I'm not saying you should have made the character's skin totally yellow. But when you're picking colors to use you shouldn't just pick them based on what color you 'know' them to be, instead of considering the colors surrounding it and the ambient lighting. It looks as if you picked the red for her eyes purely based off the color wheel, instead of picking a color that is comparatively red/warm based on the rest of the colors in the image.

Is this any better? I know chibis usually have small feet, but he wants them large.
>>
>>2767842
you're going in the right direction. My best advice for you is to look up guides on chibi proportions, and to keep practicing forms.
Go with what the commissioner wants anon. But it's my opinion that a chibi with large hands/feet isn't chibi, it's a disney dwarf.

You should go to the beginner thread. I don't know if you're trolling or if you honestly can't see how amatuer your artwork looks, but listen to me now. It's cringe deviantart tier.

different anon here, that does look better, but i think its mostly the viewer side left leg is just much larger than the rest of his body. also i think yuri doesnt have such large hips but if you were trying to make him more womanly anyways then right on. Lovely image btw
