what's a good way to practice heads? I've been drawing a ton daily for a while now but haven't improved as much as I've wanted. I think the majority have been from imagination with a couple from ref so maybe I'll try to switch it up and see if that helps.

Rushing things kill portraits. You think you can draw tons of heads per day, but what's the point really if you can't keep proportions. Lack of accuracy is very visible while drawing head and facial features. Practice that instead of drawing Loomis construction from memory.

Cool this is pretty solid. I think the neck cast shadow looks a bit weird though. I did a bit of quick noodling on top of it, basically simplifying the value statement in the shadows slightly, and then bring in more form into the lights. I also kept the hair a bit more solid with the local value.

face's are a lot about placement and volume. Learning facial planes and basic placement will help you. Also, you're not using reference correctly if it comes out worse. As a beginner, reference is best used by trying to copy it exactly. Try to match the shadow shapes, the placement, and the values. You can get these things right and check your own drawing using plumb lines (pic related). Also what I do a lot when using reference is look back and forth between ref and drawing quickly and a lot and you start seeing the differences in angles and things easier.

Don't try to make up everything, especially if you haven't studied the structure of the head in depth. I recommend you start from imagination like this, take it as far as you can, then find some reference images with similar angles to what you have already drawn and correct any mistakes using the references as a rough guide.

I did a quick example for you here. I also drew a little angled cylinder showing how you need to think of the head as a rounded form, so things like the mouth need to curve around instead of being pasted flat on.

Glad it helps. Keep studying construction. Try just doing some studies from photos as well and construct them out and analyze the form--this is one way to internalize the forms of the head so you can later do it without reference.

As for how I got the references so easily, well a long time ago I downloaded a large folder of photo reference of the head sorted into folders by which angle it is. If you google around maybe you can find some similar packs that are online, or even the exact one I downloaded.

You can probably emphasize the dimples and the way the mouth creases like that. Try it in a mirror yourself and see how the skin on your face pulls taut in some areas and bunches in other places. I feel you aren't fully capturing it yet.

Also the nose is drawn sort of like a witches nose or something which looks odd with the facial expression. I think keeping the other features more ordinary helps show the change in expression at the mouth, rather than make it look like you got everything wrong a bit.

thanks. i have a lot to learn still and I'm frustrated with how shitty they are personally, but i appreciate the compliment

advice...hm. not particularly. here's a list of shit I've done trying to improve my portraits and general human form understanding:
- draw from photos duhhr
- draw from loomis durrr
- draw from Hampton durr
- make my own videos of friend's faces or bodies, circling around them to get 360 degree headshots, analyse those. also get them to do weird things. draw frame by frame.
- ABCD exercise: imagination, sketch a head from another artist, sketch a head from reference, imagination again **i think this really helped a lot
- draw a lot of bad things from imagination and then write down what i think might be wrong with them, compare them to reference
- draw shitty fast gestures though i don't know if this helped me at all
- practice sight-size approach, make sure I'm accurately studying so i can see wtf is wrong with my imagination art
- draw from life always

I dropped out of uni 3.5 yrs ago so I've been drawing / freelancing 4 yrs

I have a job too so ya, I find time, sometimes tough. but I try to keep healthy/exercise/sleep (this is the weakest)

ideally if I get up at 5 am, work out, do house chores and food as quick as possible, draw like hell, then go to work, draw a bit more...it all works out

not really timing these portraits, more concerned about fixing my repetitive mistakes. I think they're taking me 1-2 hrs
