Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

How do you train composition? Is it something you pick up as you go along or do I have to study loads of other pictures to get why they have great composition?
>>
>>2758537
There are books on composition of movie shots and for photography. If you study those for a while you'll pick up what makes good and bad comps. I have a pdf called "Setting up your shots: great camera moves every photographer should know 2nd edition" and it gives a lot of insight.
>>
>>2758537
watch ben hur (the original)
>>
>>2758537
I think it's something that's picked up as you go. I'm trying to expedite the process by spending time every day browsing the artwork of other professionals and other artists throughout history and collecting screenshots of my favourite moments in movies and TVs shows. Photography is also worth a look I guess.

I've skimmed throught the following texts:
The Eye Of The Painter by Loomis
Composing Pictures by Graham
Where to Put the Cow by Griffin

There are different "styles" of composition for different kinds of illustrations, I think it's worth considering what makes each of them characteristic and what their various cliches and tropes are, so that you don't find yourself applying what you learn from browsing landscape paintings into drawing dickgirl porn.

exactly. i used to not practice deliberately because it was tiring (to think analytically) but i realized i was just wasting time. also "why does it look like this in this angle? how does it work with the body parts it's connected to? what if it was in a different angle" helped a bunch too.

alright i need to rework the path and fountain so that its more flat and works around to the back of the gazebo. do my colors look alright so far? do the fucking trees look like theyd realistically layer that way since no one has answered that ones. i think im ready to start pushing the details once those get sorted

will do for all of those. the water is just a place holder for now and yeah i havent put much into the gazebo. im just getting the main masses of the trees down. ill use all those tips. im just a bit past the color blocking stage so far

Judging by the blue sky, it looks like it's sunny. That should give you sharp direct lighting with warm highlights.
But yours look more like in an overcast environment. I'm not sure which of these lighting conditions you intended.

In any case I find the greens quite dull, but that might be just a personal thing. I'd try to make them more interesting since the greens cover the majority of your painting so extra though should be given to them.

Yeah, don't draw a pic with bad anatomy and then move on to render your pic with bad anatomy. Do draw a pic (with bad anatomy) and try to figure out why the anatomy is bad, and how you could do it better next time. Even re-draw that same pic. Then move onto the next pic. No rendering, no polishing, no fancy linework, just trying to learn to lay the foundations correctly.
(of course you will probably want to do the same process with your line work, color, anything else you work on...)

I'm not sure if that matters and if my ellipses are any good (but hey, it's /beg/ right), but I draw them somewhat randomly.
Sometimes I even switch between clockwise and counterclockwise when I get fed up and can't make the ellipse decent one way. I always make some ghost ellipses in the air over each other before I touch down with my pen.

Why does it look like they have downs
>>
>>2758836
Ah, forgot to ask the question I wanted to ask.

What's an easy way to figure out where to place axes on ellipses in perspective squares?
>>
>>2758837
because you measured the horizontal intervals at equal points along the bottom line relative to the camera.
>>
>>2758837
You're stretching the length as the steps go back in space. Look at the rectangles on the sides of the staircase to see. The box of the first step feels squarish- but by the time they get to the back of the stair case they have become lengthened rectangles. Those should only be getting flatter, not longer, as they recede from you in perspective. I'm not sure what method you used to project your first steps measurement back- the diagonals make me think you were trying to use mid point automatic foreshortening, but I know you could have erased lines and done something else.

And that, is why, they look like they have downs.
>>
>>2758839
Have you looked at drawabox "ellipses inside of planes" yet? Also, if you find yourself unable to draw an ellipse in a certain position, just rotate your paper. I find it easier to use the same muscles and draw all my ellipses the same way and just turn my paper to whatever angle is required.

Those anime heads are such a bad idea, dude.

If you do the Loomis method of construction, if only for the 3 dimensional fundamental work of it, you'll at least have a more accurate skull shaped unit.

And if nothing else, it's basically a sphere chopped of its sides and a wedge. Fucking with those would be much more beneficial than anime head construction guess work.

I need some advice, how to improve. So I'm on this local trading group and i started trading my shitty custom pet portraits for consumables and stuff, so far it worked pretty well, did around six pet portraits (framed) and got exactly what i wanted.

The last two didn't work out though, for one I was suppose to get laundry detergent and a plant (which they offered) and the last one I already received (a train ticket of 25$ worth which i used) but she never offered to pick it up or replied.

So I'm just really wondering what I'm doing wrong and feel bummed. I feel like the ones before were even worse? And maybe it's just flaky people twice in a row, but i don't know, I need an outsider opinion on this, maybe I have my head stuck in my ass

Face is symbol drawn, there is no knowledge of draping folds and the gesture is stiff as a board.

Those are a lot to tackle at once, so what I propose is working on improving your gestures so your shit doesn't feel so lifeless and robotic.

So I'm going through Loomis' book on head structure and hands, and I had a question.

He doesn't specify what or how much I should be drawing. Should I be trying to mimick his studies over and over until I feel I can do my own interpretation from imagination without reference, or just do it once and move on with each exercise?

I feel like I'm really autistic and I'll still be in the first dozen pages for months if I try to master every study before moving on. Am I just not drawing enough?

Picture unrelated.
>>
>>2759582
Typically you don't jump into art not knowing what you want. You have to draw first then see what needs improvement. Study then come back and see if you got better.
>>
>>2759573
The pose is "alright" in a non-body breaking sense but it's lifeless. Unless he wanted this guy to be a soldier zombie it's unappealing.
>>
>>2759586
I don't see your problem. It's a soldier standing and waiting. His back being slightly bent makes the weight of the tornister read well. What do you want him to do?
Oh also now that I look at it, his canteen should be hanging down more.
>>

1. I don't know if I'm going to add to it. I'd color it, but I have just crappy pencils and I'll mess it up.
2. I would very mucj like to define the background more, but I'm having trouble with how to do it.
3. Every time I've tried to hatch it does not work out and looks more like lines than shading. The dots are my friends.

I do have watercolors tho, but the fineliner isn't waterproof.

>>2759700

The point with the timer being so short is so you don't get too distracted with a single part of the body and forget the rest. That's something you gotta fight till you get the confidence to start throwing your gesture lines on demand. Maybe try a couple 3 to 5 minute ones, but always come back to the 1/2 min to see how you do. Its all practice, look at the forms, feel the flow of the pose, don't copy, analyze.

>>
>>2760268
Is it because I'm not estimating and accounting for a third vanishing point?
>>
>>2760260

Is this some of the Draw-a-box stuff or just normal two point?

In any case, this kind of thing will ease you into it, but only repetition and learning will make it click. Even when it clicks it's not exactly going to be smooth.

Don't chicken scratch your lines either. That'll short change your work.

Try looking into some lessons or lectures about perspective. There's a bunch of books that will tell you what you wanna know about the subject. I also hear Marshall Vandruff's lectures are great (I haven't seen more than a few. I'm working through Erik Olson's lectures now).

Just work at it, but work smarter with some knowledge behind where you're wanting to head.

Well I finished the 250 boxes thing from drawabox and from Keys to Drawing I did the first few chapters. Then I think I started with Drawing the Head and Hands from Loomis, and I watched a lot of videos of people using the method, some of wich don't really know what they're doing, but I guess they serve as bad examples. I drew heads, studied Loomis plates and all that, until I eventually got bored and moved to the next thing

Never went to a life drawing session, don't even think there's one where I live so.

Practice the simple loomis heads, get the proportions down, and try to plug everything into them where it's supposed to go, or better yet work on less complicated subjects until you get your chops up a bit.

The biggest thing you can do is draw a whole lot of boxes. Pages on pages on pages of them. Although paper is flat, drawing boxes in perspective can help in the illusion that you're drawing "into" the paper as opposed to "on" it. This isn't a one-off thing, and since you're just starting it'll be a while until it starts to click. But it will. You just have to push through.
>>

I did a lot of simple "abstract" crap in highschool, drawing thousands of squares, dead trees, stuff like that that wasn't drawing per say, I never took art classes but did some graphic design stuff in highschool, then I've just done random drawings every once and a while, usually pointalism landscapes which I think I'm actually quite good at, but I want to do webcomics so I need to learn to quickly draw humans well and I can hardly make a line. I started taking it seriously about a month ago though using the sticky and have been working on drawabox.com exercises, I try to put in an hour atleast a day but skip some, and spend a lot more time on others. The sticky helped a fuckkkkkk ton, just reshaping my ideas of what drawing is and how to think and go about it. however when I try draw from imagination I find myself dipping into a lot of bad habits. An anon told me before to stay the fuck away from anatomy because I'm far from it and I know what they mean now.

Hi, hello there I'm new. I'm not sure in wich thread to post since there's two so I'll post in both.
I am starting to homeschool and I already have some basic knowledge but I wanna do it all properly and in the "correct order". Basically I need help coming up with a curriculum. SO these are the books I collected from the books thread, in what order should I do this? Should I add/remove something? I'd like to do concept art, mainly environment.
Fundamentals: perspective made easy, Anatomy for sculptors, Color and light, Hampton figure drawing, The Loomis collection, The animators survival kit, How to draw, Robertson.
Digital art:
Robertson: How to render and The skilful huntsman, Digital art masters: volumes 1-6
Others: The art of animal drawing, Fantasy art workshop (2007)

What do you think? Any help appreciated.

First time trying to do cloth. Does it even look like cloth?
>>
>>2760720
not rly, you know why? Because cloth is basically a texture. Try again, same cloth, draw the oulines but take your time and properly render it. Here's how my art teacher made me LOOK at it properly and not half ass it.
See the darkest area's? Look at the actual picture/model. it's probably black. Is yours black? No, it's a darker shade of gray. Make it black. Do the same for white, basically take the darkest area and the lightest as reference to the rest of the shadows. Always LOOK at what you are drawing.

How do I "learn" anatomy? Like where do I start? The head? The skeleton?
>>
>>2760767
you can go from skin to skeleton or viceversa.
>>
I know it's better to start out learning with pencil and paper, but I'm thinking of getting a tablet. I want to learn digital art, but to begin with I'd just like to do warmup exercises in a way that doesn't waste a ton of paper. Would this be a good idea or is it better to get good with paper before even starting with a tablet?
>>
>>2760784

Make getting good enough to justify a tablet your goal instead of outright getting a tablet to get good from the beginning.

Use paper. It's much wiser to dole out a quantity of effort anywhere you can.

If you have the money for a tablet, set it aside and you will always have the money. Grind out a justification for it first.

Personal opinion.
>>
Is the shading correct?
>>
>>2760813
I'm mostly just getting tired of seeing large quantities of paper being wasted on boxes, circles, ellipses and such. I don't want it as a tool to 'get good', just as a way to offload a certain task to make it less wasteful. I'd still be doing studies and such on paper with pencil.
What I'm mainly wondering is if there's a big difference between doing warmup exercises like boxes and shit on a tablet vs on paper. Does mechanical skill translate from tablet to paper in that sense?
>>
>>2760767

I believe it'd better to start with the skelleton, since it have so many important landmarks that show on the surface.

Anyways, if you pick any of the reccomended books on figure (vilppu/Hampton), you will see that they teach you how to draw the figure by abstracting it first, so instead of drawing say the torso you will be drawing a 3D form that represents it like, for instance, a beanbag or a pillow. When you are done abstracting (mannequinization), you'll have learned how to simplify a figure, and can move to proper anatomy, learning the muscles and bones per se (I recommend Anatomy for sculptors by Zarins for this)

I like to think the head and the complete figure as two separate subjects, don't know why. So you could pick any of those to start

In my case I started with portraits (the head) and then moved to figure.

I'm only a /beg/ so I might not be right, this is just what I think:
You have a really soft shading on the sphere which implies some area light or some such.
The shadows should be softer and fade into distance.
The floor is light and big so reflected light should be quite strong.
The place where you put the reflected light shouldn't reflect much, because that's where the cast shadow is.
>>
>>2760824

Man, I don't know. I'd assume.

Just recycle. Or something. I didn't say you wanted it as a tool to "get good" as if by some magic. I meant "get good" as in "a tool for which you to work on until you get to a level of proficiency".

You've got this waste idea in your head as if it matters and have already come up with a solution. Just get the tablet then. You've made your decision. You just want someone else to agree with it.

It doesn't matter, dude. Just do whatever. You ask though, and the consensus is that most of us would rather just use and waste paper on beginner nonsense.

hey guys, chimin in wit my practice sketch of the day. Some iterative cycles and some stuff on the bottom. My question is, what's the best way to position the legs to make them look like they are carrying the weight? What I meant by that image was that your cubecircle isn't symmetrical.
The blue one is the original and the red is flipped. They should match when you have your vanishing point in the middle.

Regarding your lines you should probably listen to >>2761081
